Dude these look great! Your tech and the Deamonites look fantastic. That shot of Zealot leaned back looks pretty cool. I like the layouts a lot as well. But I'm curious as to why you skip around the panels like that. Why not just finish one page then move on? I'm just wondering.

Hey Jeff!....most of the time I do draw one page at a time. But i approached this submission differently...kind of as a whole. Going in knowing that Jim Lee was going to be judging(upon availability)...I went back and read some of his thoughts on page layouts/story telling....he believes that each page should have an 'anchor panel' ...a shot that is large...visually apealing.. and lingers in the viewers mind. Usually I have pretty simple layouts and sacrifice visual appeal for story telling.....with this submission I just went for a money shot on each page.....so I spent a ton of time doing roughs and focusing on those shots.....and then I paced the story telling panels around those shots. So when it was time to light box stuff, i just picked and choosed what ever I was more confident about. And hence I'm all over the place when working on these pages.
Thanks for posting and best of luck to you with your pages Jeff Dub.

Overall these pages look very strong.
However the big guy (don't know the comic) flying in page 1, has very strange arms - the connection to his shoulders /torso looks very awkward. Especially HIS right arm.
Your scenery and linework looks great. And I'm loving the detail packed pages. Reminds me of Geof Darrow - IMO a great artist because his work stands up to 're-reading' over and over because of all the small details.
Keep posting.

Hey guys...just got back from the convention (still have to fly back to Texas in the morning) and I'm super pumped. So far I've gone as far in the contest as allowed...they still haven't picked a winner. Here's the article from comic book resources. Thanks to all you guys who posted crits and were encouraging...it means allot. Also, JeffW. who post on these boards was one of the finalist who wasn't there to exept...you can check out his submission in the sequential art section<--I believe its titled "Wild Storm Submission"

Hey Nic, these pages look great. That shot of the guard looking up is golden!
I see you use a lot of irregular panel shapes, how do you decide which panels are straight and which ones are funky? I try to use those irregular panel shapes, but for some reason they always look forced and seem to mess up my flow a bit.

Hey Jordan! It was nice meeting you in L.A....next time we get together we have to go out for some drinks....hopefully I can make it to chicago...I've never been and would love to hang out with you there.
Thanks guillermo!
Jeff Dub....usually I don't use irregular shapes for my panel layouts...I prefer standard grid layouts (keeps the story telling simple)...but with this submission i wanted my stuff to stand out and have a different feel. I'm going back to standard grid layouts with the rest of my stuff....I just don't feel comfortable changing panel layouts yet. The most i'm going to do now is tilt the entire panel...so it will stay a square or rectangle, but just be turned slightly..for chase scenes and such.
Well...thanks for the replys guys......I'll keep in touch...and yall do the same.

great detail, I commend you for it...you are not as lazy as I am, but the one thing that wiull hurt you with this is the figure work of the monsters and heroes is too thick and undefined, and bubbly....draw draw and keep drawing.

I see this again and I just see Frank Quitely.
If you can make deadlines, Grant Morrison just might be calling you.

Thanks for the positive re-enforcement guys!
I'm currently waiting on a call from wildstorm to go over corrections from layouts I turned in last week. We (me and the other finalists) had a confrence call with ale garza ...scott dunbier..scott lobdell......and jim freaking! Lee....it was a short conversation but still all together surreal...and now one of those guys is going to call my house personally next monday...and go over layouts...just too cool. I'll post those new pages (an authority script) when I get it done.
Hey Arial...yes I'm a light boxing whore...I wind up drawing the same damn thing like 10 times...it makes me real slow ...and i need to break the habbit.
Nolan...quitely is definitely my biggest influence...i also love...the late great seth fisher....geof darrow...milo manara....and moebious (he has influenced all of the people listed before him)...i think history will prove him to be a profound voice in comics and illustration...he has been extremely influential. He's like the kirby of european comic artist.
Thanks for checking out my stuff!
All the best guys,
~Nick
cool stuff, the robots are really good.

Hey Nick. Any advice on using the lightbox. i find that my lines come out all shakey and it gives a traced feel to the piece when lboxed, whereas your work has an extreme confidence to the line. How do you achieve this. Is you final line drawn on the lightbox???

I suppose you might be a bit more Seth Fisher then Quitely in some ways. But i still see Quitely.
Definatley see the Moebius there.
Don't worry, one day we'll do a comic and give Morrison/Quitely a run for thier money.
