Allright, folks...now that the deadline has passed, it's time for you to vote for your favorite script!
You've got a week, until 12:01 A. M. August the 28th...let the clicking commence!

I voted for StoryArt. That is mad talent IMHO.

My apologies...in my haste to post up the poll options, I think I got some script titles wrong.
(Maybe I should sit my behind down and actually read through all of them, eh?)
cheeky cheeky trespass, voting for him/her self.
shame on you!
p.s selko too.
is it legal?

Of course, if I voted for someone else what would that say about my confidence in my work.

Of course, if I voted for someone else what would that say about my confidence in my work.
When I say this, I hope you know that I hold you in the highest personal regard and am really looking forward to seeing 47 Ronin, but if you had voted for someone else, it would mean that you had enough confidence in your work to not care whether or not you won this contest. To me, voting for yourself is saying "I don't think anyone else will vote for me, so I better vote for myself." And I think you're a better writer than that.

Technically, that should disqualify StoryArt's entry. It's only fair to all the talent here who nailed "10 pages - no more. No less."
I wanted to vote for joqn. Why? Loved his idea. Why not? No big gun fight (as specified by The Spectral Editor). I think the same holds for Sidhe, TheJuma & Selko. I'm not saying anything by that ... I mean, my script featured three characters incapable of drinking coffee and one who hated it. So, whatever's clever.
Anyway, I am far too lofty-minded and magnanimous to sully my dignity voting for something in which I myself am open to judgement. (I am KIDDING, I suppose I will vote. Nonetheless, I feel ... cheapened.)
Selko
08-22-2005, 09:43 AM
Well they were sitting around drinking coffee after a gun battle, no need to even mention it in the story if you didn't want to.

Hi Selko,
Like I say, I bent the rules myself. (I did love the Bean People!) Just voicing what I would vote for & why really. (Personally, I am for rewrites!)
Selko
08-22-2005, 10:18 AM
Oh no worries, I am going to rewrite and actually try to get my bean people drawn. I think it's kinda hard to choose writing to vote for it's not like seeing art. I went with the safe and easy cop out I guess.
Dan I understand exactly what you are saying, no offense taken at all.

- I clicked 3 scripts because I didnt see it say pick only one (you are able to choose multiple in draw offs)
- If you dont choose youre own script as being one of the ones you like that says not even YOU like it
- When did this become a contest and not an exercise in writing?
Penchant

It's a "contest" this time because mistermaxx has volunteered to illustrate the "winner."
In an effort to decide my vote(s), as well as choose which characters to use in the next exercise, I went back and reviewed the scripts. I was probably more harsh than I needed to be originally, so here's a rundown of how I viewed them:
stungun's [Come Together] (I can't help naming essentially untitled works) - imaginative, though I did have issues
joqn's Coffee Break - humorous, but I was looking for more in the ending
trespass's [Everyone Comes to Monkey Shines] - some great gags in this one
Sidhe's The Night Shift - refreshing change of mood from previous scripts
buckshot's BCDG Meets Triad - I wasn't sold on how things unfolded
StoryART's Cup of Joe - unfinished but there were still memorable elements, though I don't know why a robot would be called, as I've roughly translated it, The Mister
TheJuma's Cup of Joe Anyone? - I called them reject heroes originally, and that probably sounded too rough, but Jamie had no support out there, and she needed some
Selko's Strange Days - jarring mix between comic brilliance and juvenile fantasy
DannoE's Filthy Sex - pretty much just the juvenile fantasy, but I just skimmed this one
ajbold40's Easier Said Than Done - needed breathing room
zamuel's [Usual Orders] - reads more as an artist's exercise than a writer's (hmmm, maybe he's up to something...)
And I still haven't decided who to vote for...

When did this become a contest and not an exercise in writing?
Trespass: the original thread, started by Richard Cosgrove, (http://www.digitalwebbing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76818) was indeed an exercise. That thread is still open for any exercise-related posts, such as feedback, comments, critiques, and kudos.
This new poll thread was created to select a single script, from among those submitted to Richard's exercise, for me to produce sequential pencilled pages (now, if we can just find some kindly folks to volunteer to ink and letter...my inking skills are so bad, I should be prohibited from laying down ink over my own pencils!).

I knows maxx, my contest remark was to Dannoe's contest comment.

If only that were true. I sent in my script with the hope of getting feedback from the writers who have been doing it longer. Only Penchant seems to be doing that, except for DannoE who's only comment was he didnt even read the whole thing. For all I know the only people to have read mine are me ,Selko and Penchant :sure:

I felt as if this premise did lend itself very much towards humor. While I really did enjoy StaryArt's script, it was incomplete. Very memorable elements in it though. I'd like to read the rest. In the end, I voted for TheJuma's because I think Bob is a breakout character and, like I said previously, the premise lent itself to humor and I got some chuckles out of this one.
Just my thoughts on the matter... :)

You have every right to be mad. It was Friday, and I just couldn't focus. If you want to send me something else (privately), I'll be more than happy to take more than 5 minutes with it. Sorry about that.
I wanted to vote for joqn.
thanks a lot, that's enough to keep me happy.
btw, my thinking is that personally i would not vote at all.

Yes this is what I had in mind, but I wish their were more people outside this exercise who could vote on the story's. Oh well....as far as my favorite, and I will admit I'm not finished reading them all, I have to confess that I really liked Storyarts. Unfortunatly I have to agree with everyone and say he should not be allowed into the voting since he did not meet the required deadline.

I'm wondering if we should have put this in the Sequential Art Showcase or Collaborations to get more traffic.
In fact, whenever the winning script is determined, what do you writers think of opening a new thread in Sequential Art Showcase to post my artwork as it's created, along with all the other scripts to see if we can get any other pencilers to join in on producing artwork for the other scripts?
I think there are multiple entries in this competition that would catch an artist's eye.

I'm all for that as long as nodody over there gets mad that a writing contest is in the sequentials
mistermaxx

Well, the contest, or this poll, would be finished, the winner selected.
Then, I propose that I take the winning script, open a new poll in the Sequential Art Showcase, post the winning script and all the artwork that I generate, plus links to other scripts with a friendly "invitation" or "challenge" to other sequential illustrators to try their hand at making artwork for the other submitted scripts.

Agreed. :) It'd be nice to have a little cross-pollination, not to mention a little exposure for the writers. I think it's easier to appreciate someone's working art than it is for a working script, and that's all the more evident when you consider how slowly most of these scripts are being commented on...

Here's how I see it:
I think the Digital Webbing Forums are fantastic. I used to work in a comic book retail shop years ago, and the feeling that I get here is similar to the interaction with customers that I had back at the store: talking about favorite comics, writers, artists, sharing and comparing ideas, concepts, artwork, and stories.
The forums give me, the comic book illustrating amateur, access to the thoughts and work of literally dozens of like-minded, creative individuals the world over.
Out of necessity, the forums are organized into (more or less) special-interest groups that map to the various disciplines involved in the production of a comic book: writing, penciling, inking, lettering, coloring, etc. Members are, for the most part, drawn to their own specific area of specialization in a sort of "birds-of-a-feather" phenomena: writers to the Writer's Showcase, artists to the Artist and Sequential Art Showcase, you get the idea. There is little cross-discipline interaction. I'm reminded of the typical scene at a junior high school dance: girls on the one side of the gym, boys on the other, the music is playing, and yet no one is out on the floor dancing.
However, in the real world, comic books are a COLLABORATIVE effort, a synergistic dance involving communicating thoughts, ideas, and concepts of multiple creators.
My posts here are a feeble effort toward that goal, to somehow take the individuals members of this forum, whatever their area of specialization/interest might be, and impel them to engage the transmission of this Talent Engine that we call Digital Webbing so that the rubber does, indeed, hit the road.
Whew! Sorry...I'll step down off my soap box now.
how about putting it on the creator community then

My apologies, I didn't mean for my earlier post to be a rant...and certainly not a condemnation of any writer in the showcase, or of the participants in the exercise.
I think my irritation is more with the artists, as Richard said in the exercise thread...I just wish more of 'em were here, taking a look around. That's how comics get made, for Pete's sake...pencilers working WITH writers.
Sigh...stepping off the soap box again.

On point. Hats off for promoting this exercise in the artists' forums.
A thought:
Maybe 10 page scripts are a bit long to expect people to have the spare time to illustrate? What if we all tried something towards that end, something smaller, but more grand in scope?
What if writers wrote new, tight, 3 to 5 page shorts? The other resident genii here (pencillers, et al.) would be forwarned & everbody would form 'teams' to participate in a big exercise for the Sequential Art Showcase?

Excellent idea. Whaddya folks think? Speaking as a lazy artist (and only of myself), producing 3 - 5 pages of sequentials is an infinitely more manageable task.

Hmm I kinda like the idea of a tag team exercise done with the sequential artists. We would have to see how many artists are interested and establish some kind of guidelines. Gonna think on this, it's a good idea though.

Holy Stalemate, Batman...it's a tie!
As of the poll deadline this morning, joqn's "Coffee Break" and Selko's "Strange Days" were deadlocked with 3 votes a piece.
I guess I'll have to provide the tie-breaker.
Although Selko's script was hilarious... ("...in a tragic and timeline-altering spoiled meat accident..."
...man that really DOES read like Douglas Adams...)
...in the interest of producing artwork with "All Ages" appeal, I'm going to illustrate joqn's "Coffee Break".
But, fear not, my pensive penmen...as I post my sequential pages in the new thread opened by trespass, I'll continue to sound the call to other pencilers to join in (artists can be a competitive lot, and I'll try to capitalize on that).

thanks, i'm honestly flattered. :) last time there was a poll (it got shut down before finish) i had no votes at all so i'm pleased with my grand total of three.

TGK, excellent! Welcome aboard.
I'll be opening up the new thread shortly to start posting my thumbnails, sketches, and sequential art for Jon Quinn's (joqn) "Coffee Break".
May I suggest you go to the original writer's exercise thread (http://www.digitalwebbing.com/forums/showthread.php?t=76818), read through the scripts and select one that excites you, and start drawing away!
Watch for the new thread, and you can join me in posting as well!
Anybody else wanna give this a try?
