I am Jesse "Cadre" Hansen, a professional inker currently working with six different publishers. I am the founder of the Cadre Corner, an art studio which focuses on taking talented individuals and helping them get their feet wet. I am using the foot that I have wedged into the professional realm and hoping that the others will use this opportunity to their advantage and simply break that door down.
Let's see... a bit about myself... hmmm... I am a 30 year old malelegally if not spiritually divorced, and am planning on someday soon making a splash in the comic book field along with my comrades.
I am currently working or have worked on the following projects:
Cracked Magazine: #365 5 page story pencils, inks and grayscales... "Bubba gets Cracked"
Brass Ball Comics: Bubba the Redneck Werewolf #5-7 (Art director and inker for #7... on sale first at MegaCon 2005)
Workhorse Comics: Hellion #1
Workhorse Comics: B.U.G. #1
Fuzzy Dice Studios/Vicious Circle Project: Forsaken Earth #4 and 5 plus redo issues of #s 1-3
GraphicIllustions Studios: The Rift #5 (2 pages and concept inks)
Singularity Studios: Gladiators (Online Comic) #1
Redoubt Studios: The West Side #1
Anything else ya like to know, feel free to ask.
Now, how about you?

I've had the pleasure to converse with Tim on a number of occasions and am excited about the opportunity to have something published with me and him working together... stay tuned and you'll see what I mean. :D

The Facts - Things Contributors Need to Know
This is going to be our little FAQ. If there are things left unexplained, please ask in this thread and I'll answer them.
All emails should be addressed to: tom.mauer.1977@gmail.com - subject should contain [Hope] as a prefix
Let's start with what hurts the most.
Money: This is a self-published anthology. We've got to foot the bill on printing costs.
* Page rate: $15 USD - payable by Writers of a story and Pinup artists (please read on in this thread before you close this page and run for the hills)
* Sequential artists and the cover artist don't have to pay.
* Comp copies: Each contributor gets ONE comp copy - anything more and we'll shoot ourselves in the foot.
* At Cost copies: Contributors will have the option of ordering additional copies for their personal use at printing cost when we make the order.
* Money will be payable before we send the book to the printer in (hopefully) November/December. Use Paypal if possible. I'll make a post at the appropriate time.
Theme of the anthology:
* Stories set in/around or about New Orleans/the Mississippi Delta.
* Story does NOT have to do with the current situation.
* Have the name of the anthology in the back of your head: HOPE
* Story does NOT have to be upbeat or lovey dovey, though. Just don't make people commit suicide after reading yours.
* Likewise, pinups should be New Orleans/Mississippi Delta themed! They don't need to have anything to do with Ronin Studios characters or some such, either. Please email me with your ideas.
Genre:
* Up to you.
* Drama, history, comedy, horror, superheroes, what-have-you - if the script works, genre is secondary.
Book Name: HOPE: New Orleans.
While a larger area was hit than just New Orleans, it's the focal point of the disaster. New Orleans is our modern day version of Old Egyptian Alexandria. A city with a rich history destroyed by the forces of nature (though NO has a better chance of being rebuilt). A city that was a nexus in the region for centuries since King Henry XV. bought Louisiana from an entrepeneurial Scotsman.
This is book is our tribute to the city AND the region. New Orleans is simply the anchor.
Printer: Well, not a POD printer. Most likely Quebecor. I'm in email contact. If you've got experenience with a few printers, please email me with your thoughts.
Format: Perfectbound trade paperback, comics format. It's gonna be a big one. May have to be split into two volumes. We'll see.
Document Sizes:
Safe Area: 6x9
Trim: 6.625x10.1875
Bleed: 6.875x10.4375
Safe area starts 0.5 inches from the top bleed!
Colors:
* Interiors: black & white
* Cover: full color
Deadlines:
Script: September 16
Pencils: October 14
Inks/Grayscales: November 4
Letters: November 11
Pinup Roughs: September 16 - BEST GETS GO-AHEAD AS COVER! (see below)
Pinup Pencils: September 30
Finished Pinups: October 21 (will probably get extension)
Cover: October 7
NOTE: Please try to beat your deadline with time to spare! This is especially important for the cover right now.
Previews: Trying to assemble a package till mid October so we can get the book into the Previews published in December.
Publication date: Aiming for a February 2006 release! (NY con)
Story length: Up to roughly TEN pages, can be less.
Who owns each comic/pinup: The respective creators do. Ronin Studios is a place for like-minded people to get together and help each other create comics. It's all about creators' rights. Each comic and pinup is the copyright of its creator(s). You simply agree to let Ronin Studios print it in this anthology.
-----
WRITERS:
* The sooner you send scripts, the more time we have to work out possible problems.
* Please let me know if you're assembling an art team yourself. If you do, please provide links to artists' portfolios.
* If you want to be matched with an art team, please let me know any styles you'd prefer. If you don't, I'll use my discretion.
ARTISTS (Pencilers and jack of all trades):
* Please link to your portfolios. Sequentials a must.
* Keep me in the loop by emailing layout thumbnails and/or rough sketches before finalizing art!
Finished, print ready pencils format:
* Scan/save at 300dpi, Grayscale - do NOT scan or save as Bitmap!
* Dimensions: 6.875x10.4375 inches
* Clean up your pages! This is your job, not mine or the inker's.
* Save as TIFF with LZW compression and in Grayscale
INKERS/GRAYSCALERS:
* Scan/save at 300dpi, Grayscale - do NOT scan or save as Bitmap!
* Dimensions: 6.875x10.4375 inches
* Clean up your pages! Use Levels and Curves or whatever is necessary to make the inks print ready.
* Save as TIFF with LZW compression and in Grayscale
LETTERERS:
* Make sure you have a reasonable font size. Don't make it too large.
* SAFE AREA: 6x9 inches
* TRIM: 6.625x10.1875
* Send Illustrator files of your letters to me.
* Please give me a list of the font(s) you used if they can't be embedded..
PINUP ARTISTS:
* You CAN use the full bleed, though if you want to have margins, that's all right, too.
* The sooner you can get cracking on this, the sooner we'll get our cover.
COVER ARTIST:
* Best pinup pencils gets the go-ahead for cover. I'd definitely like one of our "name" artists to take a stab at this. Names sell, after all.
* The cover's pretty d**n important for our submission to Previews, so it needs to be done AT THE BEGINNING OF OCTOBER.
* Since the decision on which pinup becomes the cover will be made long before pinups go into grayscale phase, pinups DON'T have to be colored before we pick the cover.
* Wrap around cover is a possibility

I'm sure there's a lot more that needs to be answered, so please ask.

Raising money for pinups/real poor writers
Writers pay the page rates and not artists because it's understood artists have to invest in art supplies.
DILEMMA: Pinup artists still have to page the $15 page rate because - who else is gonna? I'm donating plasma to self-publish, so you know it won't be me.
THE SITUATION: Artists retain ownership of their sequential and pinup art. They can do with these pages whatever the hell they want.
THE PROPOSAL: We announce that pinups are being auctioned off to help defer printing costs for pinup artists.
Fans can bid for the pinups and can get them from the artist, knowing that their money goes toward printing this book and ultimately the Red Cross. (Since they'd buy art, it wouldn't be begging, basically.)
Starting price is $15.
OPTION 1: Any money above $15/pinup gets donated to the Red Cross right away.
OPTION 2: Any money above $15/pinup goes into the pot for printing costs/advertisement of the book.
----
EDIT:
It's NOT necessary to change you MO if you work solely digitally. The winning bidder could get a signed print of the pinup limited to this one copy.
As an incentive, we could credit winning bidders in the book.
----
I know that a few of the contributing writers are also just scraping by. Hell, aren't we all? But some are especially hard pressed for money. So depending on what the art team decides, maybe sequential pages could be similarly offered to get money for printing costs.
We pitched in for two pinups in "Memories & Echoes" in-house here at Ronin, and with enough PR and previews, maybe we can get get fans interested.
Half-baked idea? Something we should pursue? Please post your thoughts on this, folks. Thanks!

Hello, friends and associates... I have created a poll that I hope you
will take the time to take part in.
We, in the Cadre Corner Studios, have been presented an opportunity
which I do not wish to take lightly and without much thought. This
opportunity if taken will begin a bold new step for us and those involved.
For those that have not actually been to the Cadre Corner Communique,
please register and look around before answering the poll. Look at
the samples on the site as well to help with your decision if need be.
I value your opinions and judgement in this endeavor and thank each of
you for the time and response. Some of you I have met and/or
associated with professionally, while some only in a personal basis.
If you are receiving this, then consider this a show of respect please.
This letter is addressed to multiple recipients and therefore slightly
less personal than I would normally have liked, but to expediate
things, I find it the best course to take.
Sincerely,
Jesse Hansen

The FX Show went really well... we kept selling out the Illegal Immigrants! book each day once people got to take a gander at the inside and hearing what it is about...
Found out that only 500 were made and once they are gone, that is it. Also found out that although this was to originally be a Preview book for an 80 page graphic novel... it will now be 120 PAGES!!! wow... that's all I could say.
Anyway, come by and see us at MegaCon this month... I'll be doing portfolio reviews for entry into the Cadre Corner Studios for those interested and even if you are not interested in joining but would like an honest critique... stop by anyway. Ya never know, you may even be interested in buying some of the books, a sketchbook or some prints while there... all will be available. ;)

MegaCon this weekend... starting when?
Well, MegaCon is upon us... TOMORROW!!!
I'll be in Purple Section #3 and Chris Lesley will be in Green Section #4... Shaun Ward and
David Rivera will also be at the show, but I'm not sure where as they haven't informed me.
Shaun hasn't been able to make too many shows due to working on the two titles he's
putting out... be sure to stop by and see it... Good Stuff!
David Rivera has been on a hiatus until recently and is now getting back into the flow of
things... Top notch artists and top notch guy. Check out is rockin' artwork too.
Chris Lesley is currently pencilling "Illegal Immigrants" graphic novel and will be there to
sign copies of the debut Preview issue which John Catapano (writer/creator of the book)
will be selling at the show as well. John is in the Blue section #4 I believe. Be sure to stop
by, get a book and have him, Chris and myself sign it for ya. :D Chris will also be selling
the Cadre Corner Prints as well... Corner Convention prices are a mere $3 each, 2 for $5 or
5 for $10. That goes for the color prints as well as the black and white prints at 8.5" x 11"
AND 11" x 17". :D
I, personally will be sitting with the Vicious Circle Project guys as we will be coming out
soon with "Forsaken Earth #5" and re-releasing #1 again. I'll be the inker.
I will also have the NEW Sketchbook available, some prints as well... PLUS lastly, but NOT
least...
Ronin Studios: Memories & Echoes: Remembering World War II An anthology dedicated to
the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War II (in which the proceeds will be going to
Warchild to help the victims (children of the war). These are a limited run with a special
price of $5 as the normal shelf price versions are $8.95. I inked a story in it along with
some other Great Guys that did stories in it as well. I was also the Art Director/Asst. Editor
therefore, if you want it signed, I'll be glad to do so.
So, all in all... we have some good things going in the pipeline at the moment and would
love to see ya come by and say howdy, pick up some new stuff and keep the dream alive.

These inks need more weight and depth to seperate the foreground image from the mid and backgrounds. The inked lines are all the same width so it all looks flat.
Good Luck with your projects

Hi! Inker Jesse Hansen here, bringing you news of the comic-book variety.
I'm pleased to announce that Ronin Studios' HOPE: NEW ORLEANS -- a nearly 200-page comic book anthology benefiting the Red Cross' Hurricane Katrina relief effort -- will debut with a special edition at the big Wizard World Chicago comic-book convention in Rosemont on Aug. 3-6.
I am honored to be a part of this endeavor to help those in need and profess to have inked, grayscaled a story as well as being the Asst. Editor and Art Director for the book. It has been my honor and I hope you like the results of our labor of love.
Featuring cover artwork by David Mack, the book has more than 30 short stories by more than 80 creators. All have hurricane or Gulf Coast themes.
The WWC edition will have a cover price of just 10 bucks and will be available at the Ronin tables at Wizard World (..3072-3076 in Artists Alley). Signings and other events are in the works, too.
A regular release for comics shops is planned for the fall. It's debuting at the convention because the first anniversary of the storm is nearly upon us, and we figure Katrina will be on people's minds thanks to the ever-present media and the pending onsalught of ONE YEAR SINCE KATRINA stories.
We're all very proud of the book, and we hope sales will be strong enough to really help the people on the Gulf Coast. If you're coming to Wizard World, please consider stopping by the table and picking up a copy. If not, keep an eye at your local shop this fall.
More information about HOPE is at http://ronin-studios.com.

Just wanted to say we at the Cadre Corner appreciate the continued support you've shown here and around the web.
I'm currently inking 7 covers... 6 for a mini series which will be shopped around upon completion.
Pencils are done... I'll be inking all of them and we'll see about the rest of the process soon.
Also inking the cover for the first Cadre Corner publishing endeavor: Cornerstone. Release date in January debuting at the FX Show in Orlando, FL... then following up in February at MegaCon. A one two combo.
Also currently inking a slew of pinups to boot.
Lettering a story for the Cornerstone book, plus making editorial adjustments.
PLUS still working for some cover/pinup work to help support the cause. I've even discounted my normal rates to help with ensuring a larger number of such projects.
Those interested in signing up for the mailing list regarding the Cornerstone book, simply email us at cadrecorner@cadrecorner.com and put Cornerstone in the subject line. We'll be releasing updates, sneak peaks and news on the progress soon.
Those interested in my perhaps inking a cover or pinup for upcoming publication, you can also email us at the same address and pub tin the subject line "cover/pinup quote from Cadre" and I'll get with ya on the project and perhaps we can make a deal.
Again, thanks for the support and I hope to make everyone proud with the effort, quality and work we have coming out.

To learn more about this project: Vanquish
It seemed like a prank when officer Raymond Taylor responded to a call about a UFO crash, but the young policeman’s life changed forever that night. He opened a mysterious container found within the wreckage and unwittingly released an alien exoskeleton that permanently attached itself to his body. In time, he learned that this strange apparatus offered great powers---increased strength, controlled levitation, optical energy discharge, and projection of three-dimensional virtual imagery around his body. For more than 20 years Ray used these powers to fight crime and help humanity as the legendary costumed hero “Vanquish.” Then a scientist friend discovered that the exoskeleton’s energy was causing irreparable cellular degeneration within Ray’s body. Simply put, it was killing him. Now in his 50s, Vanquish fights on, even though each use of the exoskeleton’s power brings him one step closer to death!

NEWS UPDATE: HOPE: New Orleans Out THIS Month!!!
This has been a long journey, but the HOPE: NEW ORLEANS charity anthology is headed to stores in two weeks. Buy a copy, and help the Red Cross. (Or, wait a few weeks and pick one up at one of the affiliated tables at Wizard World Chicago.)
Here's the press release:
HOPE: NEW ORLEANS anthology to benefit Red Cross
Ronin Studios' HOPE: NEW ORLEANS -- a 224-page comic book anthology benefiting the Southeast Louisiana chapter of the American Red Cross – will hit comic book stores everywhere on July 25.
HOPE has 30-plus short stories and pinups by more than 80 creators from around the world. All have hurricane or Gulf Coast themes. Although it's been two years since Katrina ravaged the southeastern United States, people affected by the destruction still need assistance. HOPE was created to help meet that need.
"Spending time on something you love to do which will bring joy to others and help those in need is good karma," HOPE editor Thomas Mauer said.
"I think lots of the creators who got involved with the anthology thought so, too, which is why we have contributors from five continents on the book."
The pieces in HOPE: NEW ORLEANS were created by up-and-comers in the comics industry and established professionals including Michael Lark (Gotham Central, Daredevil), Chris Yost (New X-Men, X-23), Russell Lissau (The Batman Strikes!) and David Mack (Daredevil, Kabuki). Mack painted the stunning front cover.
"HOPE manages to capture the quirky, offbeat charm of New Orleans, and the terror, anger and courage that came in the wake of Katrina," said Catwoman and Amazons Attack writer Will Pfeifer. "It's good comics, and what's more, it's for a good cause."
Added Fallen Son writer Jeph Loeb: "(HOPE is) enormously powerful with very moving writing and enchanting artwork…. Open your heart and take a look inside. You'll be the better person for it."
The black-and-white softcover has a cover price of $18.95.
More information about HOPE is at http://ronin-studios.com.

Just got back from the Collectors Comics Convention in Port St. Lucie!
Let me tell ya first of all... I didn't even know I was slotted to be at this show... I knew that Keith Mallow (the show host) tried to reach me, however I got that message quite late and figured that since I hadn't gotten back to him, that I would probably have been cut from the attending roster anyway... then my bud and fellow Cadre Corner Studios founder, Chris "cannonball" Lesley calls me from the Orlando Con asking me why I didn't tell him about the show I was to attend in October. Surprisingly enough, I responded with... "I'm not doing anymore shows this year as my schedule shows... haven't signed up for any thus far." He told me, "Well, I'm looking at this flyer that has your name right on top above legendary artist Herb Trimpe and right next to John's (John Beatty: inker extraordinaire)." I said, "WHAT?" Well, to my surprise, Keith had made these cool flyers (see below) and sure enough, there my name was. How could I NOT attend now I ask you? lol.
I then asked Chris if he was willing to go with me as I hate long drives as they tend to make me tired... long story... lol. Luckily, he said sure and we were on our way. The show was held the same place it was the first time I went which was a nice place and such... unlike the second show where Keith was mislead to believe things that weren't true. Shame on them. That second show was a wash as a result... felt bad for Keith on that one. He's a great guy from my experiences with him and deserves a show to represent his kindness and showmanship.
Well, we arrived at the Community Center that the show was held at and was greeted by a nice sign made by Vital Signs outside being hung up. I was like... coolness man... doing it right!
Walked in, greeted Keith who was surprised I showed due to my slackness of getting back to him... needless to say, I received much deserved grief over that. What can ya do?... lol. Found out where we were to sit and started bringing stuff in. Unlike the first show, Keith was able to arrange a room that had a large stage area (wow right?) and all of us "artists" were situated up on stage like a main attraction... too cool. Perhaps it was more like a freakshow... oh well, I'll take whatever I can get... lol. So, anyway, Chris and I got set up, with SIGN and all! Also in attendance was the greats Herb Trimpe, Alex Saviuk, John Beatty, Big City Comics, as well as others...
We got to meet some young talent while there... seeing portfolios which is always cool and a highlight for me at shows. I love seeing what people are producing and to lend a hand if/when I can from my limited knowledge and experiences. A major plus to say the least. Never know, perhaps some of them will become "family" members here in the Corner... that is always nice as well. Never have too much family I say. :D
Well the photos below were taken after the show at a Golden Corral where Keith hosted a little get together as GC was one of the co-sponsors of the show... can't go wrong with all you can eat buffets'... lol.
From back left to front right: Herb Trimpe, Keith Mallow, John Beatty, Chris "cannonball" Lesley, front: (sitting) Steve from Vital Signs and lastly me, Jesse "Cadre" Hansen. Glad my visage didn't break the camera... lol.
Oh, one more thing real quick before I forget... I'm NOT THAT SHORT! I always tend to get in the front and as I don't want to block anyone out, I always squat or something to allow plenty of face room for others... just in case anyone wondered... lol.

FABLEWOOD (http://fablewoodcomic.com/index.html) compiles the talents of up-and-comers like Ryan Ottley (Invincible, Superman/Batman Annual #1), Manny Trembley (Panda Xpress, Sam Noir: Samurai Detective), Joe Infunari (Oni Talent Search, Borrowed Time), J.P. Ahonen and Sarah Mensinga (Flight 4) with talented newcomers like Chris Studabaker (Howard E. Day Prize Nominee), Kevin Crossley (Event Horizon), Axel Machain (Metal Hurlant), Joe Suitor (Popgun Anthology) (http://www.fablewoodcomic.com/creators.html), Jesse Hansen (http://www.jessehansen.com) (Cracked Magazine, Bubba the Redneck Werewolf, HOPE:New Orleans) and more.
Our longest FABLEWOOD (http://fablewoodcomic.com/index.html) story “Under the Midnight Sun” was nominated for the prestigious Howard E. Day Award. Comic legend Dave Sim (Cerebus) (http://www.cerebusart.com/) stated that "through a balance of pencil and ink on the interior pages and Christopher Studabaker's evocative, austere and expressionistic dialogue and narration, it's a very successful experiment."

Nice work, sir. I am also new here to digital webbing, although I have been a long time visitor/lurker. I am a writer but I enjoy checking out all the wonderful artists here. If you are in need of a good writer let me know. I really need to build up my comics portfolio.
