Great stuff! I'm not familiar with the concept, but did you want to convey that the whip cream is singing the song? Or is it suppose to be the little girl? Not trying to be a wiseass, it's an honest question.

Nice work overall... my only suggestion would be to have a few snow flakes in front of the the subjects as to make them look like there one with the environment.
Only a suggestion, other than that its really great.

Thanks a bunch guys for the comments.

Eduke, no worries. It took me a moment to see what you saw, and I understand now. I meant for it to be the girl singing to herself. Not the whip cream. It's kinda funny, or maybe sad that it would be the cream. Anywho, I may have to fix that. Now that all Ican see is a mound of Whipped cream singing to her. :)

Thanks Kong, good point about the snow. Hadn't realized that.

Vyper, I'm glad you almost cried. :)

Cool. I just noticed where you live. My parents live in Couer D'Alene. I love that part of the country.

Love the pages. I can see what kong means about the snowflakes. It would add a little more depth.

But, man, these are just amazing! Please let us know if this is picked up.

Thanks Chip. Good to hear from you. I just moved up her to the inland Northwest as it is called, I guess. I like it up here alot.
Thanks for the comments.

Util it's picked up,(who knows when) I am going to publish it online. As I draw it, I am going to put it up for viewing. And then when I have enough to try to get it in print, then I'll try that route as well. But for now, it's just fun to be drawing and showing work.

After reading the crits in the artist showcase, I think I have sorted one of your most common comments about her face looking to mature.

In the third page her eyes are approx 2/3 of the way up her head, some kids eyelines are about halfway, more forehead than anything else.

Otherwise, nice clean artwork, good composition and great colour.

aidirisuto
01-20-2005, 05:09 PM
Good point sevans. I shall ponder on it for the future pages with her.

Thanks.

Hey! I live in Seattle! Go Pacific NW!!!
I never thought it was whipped cream singing to her. I don't think her face looks too old, either. I guess that's the trouble with asking for crits, you get all kinds. It's up to you to decide if you need to alter your methods.

I agree with the others who compliment your coloring and the overall look of this work. I'm really curious now about how she came to meet the cute Panda and what will happen. Is the Panda scene only a dream/fantasy?

aidirisuto
01-21-2005, 11:17 AM
Deanlegion. Thanks. The panda and her have a whole big story, that i will reveal over time. To be honest, I don't totally know what is going to happen. I am workiing on the next few pages, and they will help reveal more about said panda.

I like the crits here at DW. I agree with you that it is tough to show work, get critiqued, and then move forward. Each person reads and sees differently. I am really happy with how this is starting and will continue to draw it, and as long as i'm having fun, who knows how far it will go.
I also show the art to all kinds of people at my work, Cyan Worlds, and I get a whole nuther set of crits.
Critiques should always be taken with a grain of salt. But i have found often, the responses you get here at DW, or at other forums, are good tools to learn to see your art from different perspectives.

Thanks again Deanlegion. The Panda shall become clearer:)

aidirisuto
01-25-2005, 12:49 PM
Hey Thorcus, you asked if it was for kids...sorry i didn't answer that.

No, not really. This beginning stuff has a kids flavor to it. And the whole book will center around a girl and a panda, but all of the other characters soon to be introduced are not kids book characters. But it will be more comic booky in the future.
SInce I am working in a format that is basically a 1/2 page of a standard comic book, it feels different then a standard book (at least it does for me).
I am trying to do an online comic book/strip, that isn't just a series of independant strips, but more of a slow reveal of a large story. Someday, I may persue printing it, and at that point, comic format, or graphic novel format will be the desired result.

Because it is strip oriented, I may jump around in the story and tell different characters stories, and then weave them all together. No matter the format, I hope to tell a fun, heartfelt story.

Mike Rok Lok, thanks for the comment, i too am looking forward to each post. Seeing as it writes itself as I go! :)

KarnivoreX, thanks for the honest crit. I changed one of the panels, the one I wasn't happy with. I feel it looks better, it could still be better over all, but it is improving thanks to you and the others who offer up crits.

Thanks. Hopefully I can meet your high standards in the future. :D

Rancor. The fact that you would like to buy this is quite the compliment, thank you.
Unfortunately it isn't available to purchase, and most likely won't be for a very long time.

But if I have my way, you wouldn't have to pay to view this, you can just go to the PX! website, or check back here and see it as I do it.
Someday i know I will desire to see it in print, for my own bookshelf. And to give to family.
I guess the more peolpe like it the more apt i will be to get it printed...who knows.

Thanks all. Including McGranger...you too. :)

that last panel is really depressing.

aidirisuto
02-25-2005, 12:10 PM
Thanks midknight...Bachalo was one of the first illustrators to get me excited in comics, granted that was his sshade the changing man days. And you would be the first person that ever likened my art to his, curious.

Nickguy...huh? I don't understand what you mean...how is it depressing.

Good depressing, or bad depressing?
PLease elaborate.

Rancor
02-25-2005, 03:25 PM
I can see the similarities to Bachalo. I love what that guy can do, from his early days up to the present.

I don't know for sure, but it seems like NickGuy was commenting on your very first page. It just added the comment to the end of the thread.

What is the PX website?

aidirisuto
02-25-2005, 05:05 PM
Rancor. PX is the www.pandaxpress.com website.

This comic that I am posting here, is an ongoing web comic of sorts.
There is other stupid stuff at the PX! website as well. The best addition there is the assorted facts that are posted with each art post.
If you haven't checked it out, you sure can.

Thats a long answer to say PX is short for pandaxpress.

Very funny. This story has everything, and you're moving at a lightning quick pace (compared to me, anyway). I didn't quite get panel two in the last one, though. Maybe show a bit of the dart half way on panel or something.

Unfortunately, at least to me, this is my least favorite page. The color theory seems really (if I can use a technical term) wonky. Very visually congested and confusing.

I think i know what you were going for, but color blocking combination of foreground and background objects confuses all the shapes, and ends up flattening the page. Maybe if his outfit weren't the same orange shadow as the bkground, and the ninjas were not the exact (or close enough) red as the background the elements might separate more.

Still eagerly look forward to the next "page".

Later,
Chip

As concerning the work from the first page of this thread:

If anyone here is familiar with Kaboom, that's what this sort of reads like for me, and the third page looks like something right from it.

As concerns the second page, the first panel superimposed on the main image distracts me. It might be just as well to lose it.

As for the rest, this is really great stuff. "Roller skating American," with great wit, too. I thought #17 worked visually. I just came across this, and I'm hooked. Great, great stuff. Did I mention it was great? The Kaboom aspect was lost by the fourth page, btw.

RAYD! - You speak the truth. Goat is good.

Karnivorex. If PX! is anything it is a series of unexpected events...so far.

Seeing as this is still the introduction phase, I feel that it is still good. The actual story development and weaving of the seperate character threads together is the next step. And I am sure we'll sprinkle some unexpected in there as well...just for you, and your dancing banana. :bounce:

Penchant
04-04-2005, 09:55 AM
Just in case taxi drivers were becoming too...normal...I'm going to assume the goat is the character to pay attention to. This one was a little less engaging than the others have been. Maybe it's because we don't know which one (or maybe it's both) we should care about, maybe its just the highly usual flow. It lacks the Panda magic somehow...

Liquid realm, In regards to printing...short answer yes. Long answer not yet, because, A) I don't have a publisher, B) I currently can't afford to print it by myself, C) it's only 23 pages long so far, and it would be a odd sized book.

My goal is to wait until i have a large chunk done before i try to publish it or print it myself. I know there are places like comixpress, and the like where i could print my own, but ultimately I am going to wait until PX! has a sizeable following of people who actually want to pay for it.
I am giving it away for free right now, and I really enjoy that, and i hope that that is part of the appeal. I know the story is a bit odd, so free helps ease people into the story without feeling jerked around by our awkward storytelling.
I am getting alot of good responses, and I have had aleast a a couple dozen people ask me if it will eever be available in print. AN truly, I hope it will be someday, for me and the people that seem to be enjoying it.

I am doing a painted short story, 8-10 pages, maybe more, not intended for print, and I am also developing little mini comics to show at the PX! (http://www.pandaxpress.com) website.

More art to come later.

Penchant, I'm glad you are goating it!!! Haha....ah, that won't get old will it. :p Thanks man.

RAYD! I and a friend (Eric, a co-worker of mine) created the story and do the story development(which consists of me walking into his office and we figure out in about 5-10 minutes what the next few pages will be, and then I go draw them). We both write the words, and i finish it. We did figure out the story plot through about 120 or so pages, so we are not really winging it. We do however kinda make up junk as we go to add. Its fun.
Everything else through to lettering is me.
Yeah, I am busy, considering this is an aside thing outside of work. Each page only takes about 6 hours to do, so i do roughly 2 per week, and it causes some late nights but as a whole its a relaxing pace.

aidirisuto
04-27-2005, 07:39 PM
danedawg99, nothing to get really.
It may appear as though it is a series of random scenes, but what we have done is simply introduce all the characters. The goat is the last character to be introduced.

I can appreciate your confusion. THe sad thing is that the story gets clearer and does have a point, but since you as the viewer only get 2 pages per week, you will basically be reading this at snails pace. I liken it to watching a movie 2 minutes a week. IN 1 minute increments. That would be odd.

And since this isn't a comic strip, that has little self contained stories each day or week, you and me, will have to wait untill the whole story arc is finished to enjoy it as one large book. The whole story will take about a year to make. And should be about 150 pages long.
If it weren't for a pesky day job, I would probably draw 4 or more pages per week.

We are enjoying the story, and as long as its a fun read and free to the public, we will keep giving it away for all and we will kepp making it. It will most assuredly be an odd story, but one we hope will be satifying when its finished.

Thanks for at least checking it out.

danedawg99

The developing of Pollo's story has gotten me the most intrigued of all the introduced characters (which is funny, because his first strip is still my biggest problem with the project), but Wikkity has definitely been the most fun.

The anecdote you posted the other day at the site, about the talking goat, I think I've heard before, but in a different iteration. It's hilarious.

Penchant, thanks. The goats story I think is the most intriguing, even though the first page started out so plain as you put it it...which is cool. I like his page arc, and I look forward to how he plays a part.

snoochie02, well I can try to show you how it gets done. I tend to do wahtever it takes to get the page done, so my presentation isn't that slick...
Here goes...

1. This isn't the page i am going to attempt to demonstrate my page with, but its the only example I have of my pencils. As you can see, they really aren't pencils. More like layouts. I use a cheap ream of printer paper my co-writer gave me. SO there ya go, layouts. Not pretty.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/aidirisuto/PXSteps00.jpg

2. Pretending that I just showed you the pencils for this page, then I do inks. I use pens. Nothing fancy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/aidirisuto/PXSteps01.jpg

3. Then I clean those inks up in Photoshop. I also add my borders at that time.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/aidirisuto/PXSteps02.jpg

4. There is big jump here, where I do flats, lay in shadows and general highlights. I use most everything and anything in PS to do that; lasso tools, brush, pen tool, gradients, etc.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/aidirisuto/PXSteps03.jpg

5. Now it gets a bit tricky, or i could just chockt up to "magic", but I do stuff, adjust layers, add layers of color, solids, gradients, etc, to get the mood and feel and light style I want.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/aidirisuto/PXSteps04.jpg

6. Then the finished piece. Another big jump. And each page gets its own special lovin' at this point. Letterin', and logo and pink border.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/aidirisuto/px025.jpg

I hope that wasn't boring beyond reason, and I apologize for not being able to help you understand better what is done. Beyond laying flats and shadows, which I think is pretty standard, the color finishing is where the special crap is. And that would be the part that I can't really explain very well.

I hope that helps. Or was at least relatively interesting.
I feel wierd showing my pencils, so unfinished and uncool..

Any questions Snoochie02, and I will gladly try to answer. Honestly i don't even know if this is what you were looking for...now I feel stupid...doh...

I had to go back and review as to whether or not she was originally wearing shoes (ummm, no reason :har: ). Thusly satisfied, this girl's almost as much trouble as her panda. I don't think she even went to the bathroom. :p

I finally broke down and viewed your website. What a completely odd comic series you have going on here. I enjoy this quite a bit more than i do most monthly comic book titles. My main question would be what inspires you to do this? Second question would be, do you write, draw, and color all this yourself? In any case, this is excellent stuff, very quirky, but highly entertaining.

aidirisuto
06-21-2005, 02:37 PM
Vandal. Thanks. More than most monthly comics? Wow. That is indeed high praise. :)

To answer your second question first...
I and my co-worker, (we both work at a video game company) his name is Eric Anderson, created the idea in January. We wanted to make a cool comic, since we are both comic fans, and since the market (in print) is so wierd right now, we thought what better way than to make a comic and release it 2 pages per week on the web. I don't really like to call it a webcomic, but more a comic given away for free online. We do hope to print this some day, but we figure we'll go to print when the demand is there for it. The webcomic world is filled with so much content, and most of it isn't very good, so we figured, heck lets make a comic the way we want to, and give it away for free to anyone who wants to read it. If its good, people will be shocked and wonder why its online for free, and hopefully tell others and then we will build a following for PX!
If the book sucks, no harm, we only contributed to the massive amounts of crap online. And no one will follow it and we will have fun time at it.

It seems to actually be building a small following so far, which is best thing we could've hoped for. We are by no means giants in the web world, in fact most people have no idea who we are...which is cool.

We are having fun wrting and drawing a bookthat we like, and that there is the key. We get to make a book that we want to read. Is it odd? yep.
Will it make sense in the end? Yep.

Eric and I wrote the plot and we both work on story and dialogue.
I do all the art. Every bit of it. 2 pages a week. I wish I could push out like 3 or 4 pages per week, but thats too much right now.

What inspires us?
We love telling stories. And the idea of giving it away free...well, that part i love. No oone expects it. Plus, I like PX! alot, and feel like giving it away is kinda like sharing pictures of ones kids with everyone you meet! You just want everyone to see how cool they are, and of course every parent thinks their kids are cute!!! Even if they aren't!

So, in a nut shell, the fact that you have now read it and find it interesting and hopefully will follow it, that is the reason that I keep doing it.

Hopefully I will be able to keep at it, and keep giving it away for free. Until I have books to sell!! :p

Hopefully that answered your questions. If not, ask more.

Wow, thanks for the lengthy reply there. I am kinda weird in the questions i ask in the fact that i dont want to know the technicals of the art or anything, i find the whole creative process to be much more interesting. Your work shows a LOT of wit and intelligence behind it, and some good humor as well, my comment about it being better than most monthlies was entirely true, what you guys have going on has more heart, more humor, and more obscure references than anything else around. As an added bonus, i really enjoy the art as well. Good luck to you guys, and i will be checking your site regularly for new additions. Thanks for taking the time, Manny, i appreciate it!
