Hey, I was wondering if pro inkers use brushes exclusively or if they used pens for the finer lines. I've seen better effects with brushes than with quills so I'm trying to make the switch. I've inked 2 Daredevil pictures pencilled by Ken Hunt. On the first I outlined with a quill and used the brush for shadows. The second I used the brush exclusively. (Pentel brush pen)

I believe Jaime Hernandez uses crowquill for all his linework. Whatever works for you!

You're right. I wish there were more quill tutorials on youtube.

I find quills very frustrating myself, but I'm not ready to give up on them yet. I think one thing you just have to accept with them is that they're never going to be as fluid, or have the same ease of line weight variation, as a brush.

A book I strongly recommend is Rendering in Pen and Ink by Arthur Guptill. It's an old classic; you can probably find a used copy cheap.

The only problem is that if you want ink with quills like Mark Morales do you may need many empty FedEx boxes and a lot of duct tape.
Very difficult to find in this digital era.

Newt I'll look into that book, thanks for recommending it. Robert, I am impressed with the line quality those artists are achieving with the quill. It's inspiring for sure. Scribbly could you explain the FedEx boxes and duct tape please?

It's not that one is better than the other. I admire the hell our of Joe Weems and Batt and they are quill guys. I am a brush guy simply because it's more comfortable with me. For some the brush is more difficult because it doesn't give the same feedback that a quill does. Quills are much more rigid and give much more feedback to your hand. Quills are also much more prone to splatter though and the ink doesn't dry as fast as with a brush. There is no right or wrong here. Very similar lines can be achieved by both.

Ahhh, I did watch the video but I missed his home made drawing board. I need to make one, good for the back if you're going to be drawing for hours.
