Iíve got a treat for you this week! Thereís a guest speaker! Iím going to let him introduce himself, and do all the rest. Take it away, my friend!

Itís Tuesday and boy is it weird to be typing this column, rather than reading it!

As you might already know, I am not Steven. My name is Jeremy Melloul, and if you havenít heard of me then youíre probably in the majority (I guess I should do a better job at Increasing My Brand Awareness (http://www.comixtribe.com/2013/10/08/bn-week-146-increasing-awareness-of-your-brand/)!).

Steven was gracious enough to let me write a guest article for Bolts & Nuts, which Iíve been reading for the majority of its existence. As a comic book writer whoís just produced his first comic it may not seem like I have much to contribute to the library of advice Steven has built up, but hopefully youíll find what I have to say useful. So, without further delay, lets talk aboutÖ

Perseverance.

Of the many essential characteristics one needs in order to build a career in comics, Iíve found perseverance to be the most taken as a given. Other traits like talent, luck, professionalism, and affability are frequently mentioned. Perseverance, however, is just an assumed trait. I understand why. I know that, as a writer, if you ever find yourself unable to write your way out of a corner, the solution is just to stare at the screen until your forehead bleeds (you heard that before?). Thatís perseverance. Whatís the alternative? Give up? Let your comic wither away (or get fired, thatís probably more likely assuming itís a project you were hired to do)? No. Youíre going to sit there and persevere until you bleed. If not then, Iím sorry, but you arenít much of a creator.

Very thankful to get to be a part of Bolts & Nuts. I love the column, read it every week, and really hope people find what I had to say useful.

Thanks for the article, Jeremy. Inspiring and helpful. There aren't enough creative people in the world and it's a shame when the ones we have give up. I'm sure there are some creators out there for whom motivation and perseverance aren't a problem (and I hope they all get carpal tunnel :p) but for the rest, this is great stuff to read. Congratulations on completing your book!

Thanks, Max! I agree entirely.

As for my book, thanks! It's evidently been a long time coming :). Now onto the next one!
