Didn't suck.

The pre-wide-release reviews said it was a poor showing, I disagree, it was better-than-average.

Don't imagine anything terribly original or creative, but good.

it's had good/solid reviews in New Zealand.
Plus, the audience seem to like it (I work at a cinema).

I haven't seen it yet, but will do soon.

Am I the only one who thought it was like District 9 in reverse?

I'm dying to see this, but I may have to wait for Netflix

Meh, it's a politic lefty flick hiding as sci fi. It deserves the BO it gets.

Hiding?

It couldn't be more blatant if it tried.

Ditto the trailers.

I'm with Haphazard. I might have liked it a little bit more than him. Then again, I haven't seen District 9.

District 9 starts of with an Apartheid theme then halfway becomes a version of an old flick, LaserBlast.

Yeah so District 9 was about apartheid and racism, so Elysium went the immigration/classism route. Besides that, it was still a great movie. Damon wasn't anything special, but the other actors did a good job in this flick (Wagner Moura was terrific as always, though not nearly enough Diego Luna than I'd have liked in the flick). Sharlto Copley was awesome, Kruger was nuts in a fun way. Much like District 9, there was a great mix of the high technology and the stark contrast of the gritty real world, the juxtaposition of such advancement to a world not too far removed from our own. As a gamer, I couldn't help the comparisons in style to something like Mass Effect, but I feel like another director (like Alfonso Cuaron?) could have really brought this thing to a whole other level.

Well, Elysium itself does look like the Presidium from Mass Effect.

When I watch the Elysium trailer I see artifacts from the Halo movie that Blomkamp was spearheading before it got de-funded. Elysium looks like a modified Halo, and there is a shot of a flying vehicle of some sort that looks very similar to the Pelican from Halo. Add in the idea of a sort of super soldier wearing a powerful exo-suit fighting against a seemingly unbeatable force and you are pretty close to Halo.

My son and I watched LaserBlast a few weeks ago. He may never forgive me for making him sit through it.

Isn't all Sci Fi politicy, lefty or righty?

Elysium bothered me mostly because the first trailer I saw touted it as thoughtful science fiction...and then it turned out to be a pretty decent techno-thriller which would have been much better if it hadn't kept hitting us over the head with Mjolnir politically.

Oh, and if they'd hired a science advisor or at least talked to somebody at NASA about orbital mechanics.

Oh, and if Matt Damon had actually acted.

I just got out of the theater. It was good, but not great IMO. The last few minutes were some of the most heavy handed I've experienced in a theater in a while. It seems that the victory should have meant more than "hooray, free healthcare for everybody!"

Jon Dahl..... If you love bad films check out "Manborg". It's a new(ish) film made by Astron 6, so bad it's good.

Plus, made by about 6 people all up. With deliberantly bad sfx.
