Apparently, Cheerios has crossed the line with their most recent commercial.

Can you spot what the issue is?

They had to disable the comments section on the video because of all the hateful racist comments.

Just that commercial?

Or all the online videos on the internet?

I don't see it as controversial.

When I saw that commercial, I thought a black man broke into a white woman's house and took a nap after eating their food.

The only offensive thing about that advert is the deliberate pandering to the 'we're not racist!' agenda currently running through the media. It's patronising and pathetic.

That said, it's also terribly sad that it stands out so much that this is a black guy and a white woman. These relationships exist, so why does it come across as so false in advertising?

Or is it controversial because she wasted the food?

Ignoring all the comments underneath (which are just monotonous and add nothing to the article) this article makes a good point, and is probably one of many currently circulating the web:

So a black man and a white woman adopted a biracial little girl. Nothing wrong with that.

What is the big deal? My brother-in-law is white, my sister-in-law is black, and they have four kids. What is the big deal with the commercial? LOTS of people have inter-racial relationships. If the personalities and body parts match, all's good.

It doesn't amaze me that people think that this WOULDN'T be an issue still.

It's an issue on both sides of the fence, black and white, so let's keep this in reality.

If you have a society, any society, whose very basis is grounded in one people being inferior to another, whose blood is the bedrock of society, ANY people in any society that it's so interwoven into every part of it, then things like this, whether out in the open or behind closed doors, will be an issue.

Always will be.

Don't blame people blame the cowards and racists who make these stupid commercials. Did you know that they have tokenism in commercials. Watch a commercial with a group of people if there are more than 5 people one has to be a minority. this doesn't apply to an all black commercial though but the music in the black commercials has to be some sorta R&B or hip hop sounding music. The so called open minded liberals who make these stupid commercials are the biggest racists out there. One other thing to look for is the non scary black guy. He's usually wearing glasses, balding or has a real nice beard and mustache. He's wearing sweaters or pullover sweater vests or some sorta pussified outfit. This mostly only has to do with general commercials not the kind where no one is interacting with anything but the product. Like car commercials where the driver just needs to look cool or suave. Blame the cowardly racists who do the ads, don't blame general society cause we couldn't give a fuck otherwise.

Calm down Theo!

I'm 37 and mixed...I don't get the big deal. It seems to only be a black and white issue!

White & Mexican = ok
White & Asian = ok
White & Black = No F'n Way
Asian & Black = Tiger Woods

First of all, when did marketing become "liberal"? If their research shows them that these, yes, artificially multicultural groups in commercials help sales, that's the sum total of their motivation to make the commercial.

As far as tokenism...well, yeah. But it's a catch-22 now, isn't it? Never showing interracial relationships (which even feels like a ridiculous thing to still have a term for) is unrealistic.

Isn't this just a 'token' response, though? That accusations of racism are aimed towards advertisers BECAUSE they purposefully try to represent different races only says to me that perhaps the issues here are from yourself. You've highlighted stereotypes that make the general public feel more at ease with something 'a bit different', but that isn't really racism, it's trying to do something about it. Of course Cheerios knew there would be a backlash over this advert - but at least they've made a step in the right direction. And at least their product is highlighted in the mix, too. They've done their job, now let the public market their product further, and highlight some issues in the meantime.

It certainly isn't a bad thing that this advert was made. Making allegations of racism doesn't mean you aren't racist.

You guys haven't a clue. This tokenism has been around since I was a kid. In fact it was a sorta big deal when it was found out and they even spoke about it on the news way back in the mid 70's. If an advertisment agency feels the need to make these stupid commercials it's because of what they think plain and simple. Fact that you guys think this commercial is controversial says more about you. My Wife is white and my son is a mutt. My mother is half white and i'm a quarter mutt. Seems to me you guys making comments have some racial issues you need to work out at the next Klan meeting.

It'd be a great spin on this "story" if all of those racist comments on Youtube were only made by black people, because everyone knows that only white people commented on that video. ;) Hell, I never asked for anyone's race here. Some of you people are shoehorning it for some reason or another, to what, justify this argument or something? Neat. Besides, I'm also mixed. I'm Anglo and Caucasian. And if you think that's the same thing, you're a racist! :p

Cheerios suck, btw. That's the only issue I had with the commercial.

Probably the most racially annoying commercials are the technical college commercials here in ATL, and the Popeye's commercials with that "MMMMMMM Chicken honeychile baby sugah" woman that takes credit from frying all of the chicken herself or whatever. If you want to be appalled by something be appalled by those stereotypes, and targeting low income blacks and latinos with for profit technical and trade schools that are simply trying to get people to pull full tuition loans and put themselves further in debt.

It's so annoying when you can see the thought process play out like:

Advertising Exec: Hmm black people seem to like fried chicken, how can we get them to buy more?

Jon Hamm from Mad Men: Well we should get a black person to tell them to buy the chicken and that they'll like it.

Advertising Exec: Brilliant! What are black people like?

Jon Hamm from Mad Men: Aunt Jemima...they are all like Aunt Jemima

Advertising Exec: Of course! But be sure to get the message across...we have to make sure that it is as authentic as possible.

Jon Hamm from Mad Men: Don't worry we'll have her get jive ass and throw in some "aw girlfrin's, some honey chile's, some mmmm sugah's"

Advertising Exec: BRILLIANT!

So I guess none of this really matters.

That is a completely unrelated story. Given the mentality of snuffing out one news story with something completely unrelated I could make that girls death a moot point by pointing out that the prices are being raised at Disneyland.

Seems to me you guys making comments have some racial issues you need to work out at the next Klan meeting.

So basically I have no clue because you're mixed race and therefore... wait, I'm not getting the logic here. Pretty much everyone with a TV knows or at least can fathom the idea of 'tokenism'. Of course it exists. It will exist for as long as people keep defining themselves by the colour of their skin. 'You guys making comments' - are we not allowed, now? I haven't seen anyone say anything that doesn't make sense (except you). What have you actually addressed in this response? 'My family has different races mixed together so I understand racial issues more than all of you' - urm, no. That just won't wash here. You don't automatically gain knowledge just from having different coloured skin from someone else.

Obviously, though, you have no idea why this advert is controversial.

Only Racists notice race. Remember, black man speaking here.

"Only racists notice race - remember I'm black, so I'm bringing up the issue of race pre-emptively because I know you're out there, and I want to make you aware of me! I know you're out there, and I know you aren't comfortable with that, so I'm creating the conflict before any of you can!"
