About a year ago I bought the student edition of Photoshop and Illustrator, and around that time I bought the Comicraft guide to lettering. Back then, I used their technique for making word balloons and the tails with no problems, but lately, I'm struggling to duplicate my previous results.

I can type lettering in and make a balloon, but when I try to make the pointer and use the pathfinder palette to unite the pointer to the balloon, the two ends of the pointer inside the balloon connect, instead of uniting with the balloon. Can someone help me? What am I doing wrong?

(I'm using Adobe Illustrator CS5)

What you're doing wrong is that you didn't stop by Ninja Lettering (http://www.ninjalettering.com/).

Sounds like you may not be selecting the balloon and the pointer at the same time. Make sure that they are both selected and they should unite without issue.

Yeah, there were quite a few things I was doing wrong. Smitty at Penciljack guided me through it, and I figured out what I was doing wrong. I think I'm getting the hang of this now!
