In my mind I always think that Batman is basically a protector of Gotham, not a crime fighter in the truest sense. It's in character for him to show his discontent in The Dark Knight when he rounded up those vigilante Batman impostors, because they didn't understand what being Batman actually mean. It's not about bashing criminals heads or blasting them with shotguns, and it's certainly not about wearing hockey suits to a drug deal and mess things up. He's doing it to save lives on a personal level, while his company take care of the much larger problems (poverty, apathy, etc.). Azrael and The Red Hood are, in concept anyway, more appropriate crime fighters because they only care about fighting and destroying crimes and care less about saving civilians. There is nothing wrong with Batman being Batman.
