...virtually every woman I know tends to look at her current costume and say, "How does she fight in that thing without all her parts and pieces flying out?" She needs to look as strong, capable and resourceful as she is. As another female friend put it, "What woman wears the same outfit for sixty years without accessorizing?"

See, I want to disagree with the costume change but it does kinda make sense.

You're right I think all super heroes should just wear jeans, T-shirts and jackets get rid of all those silly costumes. Wouldn't want to embarass the adults who are ashamed of them.

I dunno... I didn't read Wonder Woman before. I doubt I'll want to read it even with the new duds.

Oh, I'm suppose to read it because of the new origin and timeline?

Hell, I'm waiting for the "Brand New Day" crew to tell me what happened to Peter and MJ (not to mention explaining the whole "no-face" effect) after "OMD." I'm not interested in waiting three years to figure out what happened to a character I don't follow.

that looks like jim lee art to me and as much as i like the guys art and how much of an infulence he has been on my in the past.. i HAVE to say..with all due respect... his design sense sucks super donkey balls and ALWAYS has...since the time of Xmen. he can draw anyone great.. but all his designs suck.

can you imagine what Adam Hughes probably thinks of this design? you know..since HE could draw her in her traditional outfit and make her look perfect..

Looks like Wonder Woman on her way to the gym. I realize that nowadays the: "Star-Spangled Stripper" look of the original costume doesn't really appeal to women, but I can't understand why someone can't seem to get a good take on updating the original outfit. This is far too mundane and forgettable. I'm guessing it'll wind up being much like the black Spidey suit from years back: It'll be around for a while, and they'll go back to the original ( I hope ).

This is nothing.

Wonder Woman got a new costume during the whole Blackest Night thing, no?

Nothing.

She's had a ton of different costumes at different points.

It's absurd that these people expect everyone to devour their tripe... and pathetic that news organizations report this bullshoz.

Wait a few months, old costume'll come back. Does every time.

also I don't see the point of a new origin, just more confusion, just retell her original origin...surely her being whisked away from doomed paradise island and fostered in man's world will not only change her political point of view, and make her more sympathetic to man and less to amazonian tradition and also...its a bit Clark isnt it?

Superman, also by JMS, is going on a road trip across America by foot. Probably after Green Lantern and Green Arrow tricked him into a bet after a whole night of Kryptonian beer drinking.

I'm less critical of the Supes-"Kang in Kung Fu" bit, it makes sense considering "War of Supermen." Faith in America's favorite Kryptonian is probably at an all-time low. He needs to get back in touch with the people and plead his case.

My hope, and I feel that JMS has always had a handle on this kinda thing (see: Brave and the Bold), is that despite Supes' best intentions, he'll learn that some people that will never forgive or trust him again. It's like finding out your favorite baseball player took steroids. "You mean, he's as bad as Bonds? As Clemens?" His affiliation with New Krypton probably puts him in the same ilk as Zod in the eyes of many. It's a chance for JMS to tell some really good, small, self-contained stories a la Bruce Jones at the beginning of his Hulk run.

From JMS on "Grounded":

It should be mentioned that this journey is not intended as a blind paean: as he moves across rich areas and poor ones, though the midwest and the rust belt, through cities on the rise and those on the downward slide, we will be honest in what we show: there will be casual cruelties and drive-by selfishness, as well as problems and difficulties that even he can’t solve. Powerful as he is, he cannot defeat poverty, or inequity, or our blind, headlong drive toward self-destruction. But alongside those faults we will feature the charity, the decency, the compassion and the stubborn, noble courage of the human race, and rediscover why he has come to represent the best of us while never shrinking from the worst of us.

As I recall his handling of Spider-man's "totam Power" was a universal joke and dirided. He can't seem to get his mind around characters having a scientific origin.
Not that Wonder Woman does have a scientific origin, but I still think this new one sounds to much like Clark's...and whats the point of that? Leave her alone, her outfit is iconic if slightly inpractical.

CHWolf
07-02-2010, 12:35 PM
It's about as impractical as the "ridiculous" threads professional dancers, cheerleaders, gymnasts, sports stars, etc. wear.

Enough of this BS about comics having silly costumes. (Mostly said, impotently, to the media and non-comic-reading public.)

I'd like to take some of these people to a Beach Volleyball competition and see what they think of the ladies' ability to destroy each other on the court.

Sure, it's not exactly hand-to-hand combat with demigods, but still.

The news outlets that report on this stuff insist on showing the old Wonder Woman TV series as if that's the starting point of the character.

The local station even said something akin to "Forget her patented spin..." as if that was actually something that they're getting rid of just now.

But yeah... up next: Red Wonder Woman vs Blue Wonder Woman!

Actually War of the Supermen was something fairly new, though exciting or not is entirely up to you. While I wouldn't go so far as calling JMS a hack, all he did in Spidey and Thor was aping Neil Gaiman's concepts.

The way I see it, they've taken everything that made Wonder Woman the icon that she is - her great physical strength, her beauty and grace, her unique history as a citizen of an all-female society, and her innate ability to make an armored bathing suit look classy as hell - and thrown it out the window, leaving us with this greasy-haired mid-90's-X-men reject.

Wonder Woman shouldn't "cover up", just like no woman should ever be made to feel like she has to cover her body just because some assholes can't keep their boners in check.

Also, though iconic, the Wonder Woman costume has always been a bit... silly... to me. I know that ANY costume would look crazy in real life, but I mean the whole half naked thing doesn't really work. A LOT of old Golden Age characters (both men and woman) ran around half naked. What the f**k was that all about?

The athlete image has changed from the 40's. People actually wear pants etc. They should keep the color scheme, but make it more practical.

But lose that ugly jacket. At least don't have her rolling her jacket sleeves up! I agree that Jim Lee has stale taste. :yuk:

The girl is almost invulnerable, what does she need armour for?

She can take full-on punches from a bloodlusted Superman without turning into a red mist.

She´s been flying/gliding in air currents since the 60s.
At this point, arguing that she shouldn´t be allowed to fly is like asking bats to lose his cape.

She needs armor because the bikini is retarded. Armor makes sense from a design standpoint. She's supposed to be from a warrior culture not a swimsuit magazine.

And I don't care if she's been flying since the dawn of time. Her being able to fly is absurd. Nostalgia is never an excuse.

Eliseu Gouveia

The porn swimsuit IS retarded, but that ´s no reason to cover her up in armour.

Just dress her in a way that makes sense for a 3,000 years old matriarch society.

As for flying, the voices that claim she shouldn´t fly are usually the nostalgic ones (the ones who miss the Lynda Carter show in the 70s, where she couldn´t fly due to budget constraints).

Me, I go by the Rule of Cool.
The one that says that if she looks absolutely awesome flying, then just let the girl do her thing.

I never really get why Wonder Woman need an invisible jet when she can fly. I don't see why she has to wear a swimsuit all the time. I don't know how impervious she is with cold and heat or tanning and skin rashes because normal humans would probably get those things when out with such minimal clothing for a long period of time. I don't see why stars are conveniently part of her motifs besides the fact that her creator was American. I don't see the Greek connection in anything she wears, even her lasso and eagle in her chest is hardly Grecian. In fact she's so American she's probably better off wearing a cowgirl outfit.

Jasen Smith

First thing you'd want to do when designing a character is think, "Who is this character?"

1) She grew up on a secret island of Amazons.
2) She's an ambassador, a woman with power and respected.
3) Super strong.
4) A warrior.
5) Believes in keeping the peace. Good morals.

Take in everything she is and create a design off that.

Because she has also already been designed with the red, white, and blue, you'd also have to use that as your starting point so fans would not be disappointed.

Personally, I feel her arms and part of her back should be shown, showing the muscle, that she is powerful and strong.

Keep her curls, this made her look older and wiser. Straight hair is usually something you'd see on younger girls and not on women who are in power.

Her bracelets I feel should cover the tops of her hands and go up to the bottom of her elbows, this way she is sure to block bullets.

Her logo, her breast plate is something that has to stay, it's like Super Man logo, we can't change it. Changing it changes our character.
The logo also has to be placed on her chest and I feel should be made of a gold metal, armor-like.

Her tiara I feel should have always remained the same metal color as her chest plate. In fact all the shiny metal she wears should be the same color, other wise she will clash and women are better dressers than that.

So far, she has black curly hair, a golden tiara without a red star, golden chest plate, a red leather tunic much like what Chun Li wears but not as long and it would taper off at the bottom.
She also would wear something to guard her mid section, that old belt she had would work great but maybe add some design to it, make it more elegant than broad. This metal belt also has a holster to hold her golden whip in. That's right, get rid of the lasso, seriously the rope reminds me of what Samwise Gamgee gets in LotR.
Now, what's going to cover her butt. The color I will say must still be blue, the white star can stay even, I'll tell you why later. So how about a sash instead. Connects to her metal belt in the front and hangs low in the back, this isn't a skirt and it takes place of the cape that Supes and Batman wear.
Her boots, keep them the same but make them taller, right above the knee and not so loose fitting.

Why does she wear so much propaganda? Because the first person she saves works for America in the CIA. He introduces her to "America" and they have her wear the uniform to show, "Hey, she's working for us."
And there you go, there's my Wonder Woman redesign.

Biofungus
07-11-2010, 01:30 AM
Well... if her outfit was more accurate... the Grecian Amazon's would be wearing skirts (I don't know if artists preference, but she has had a skirt), no underwear. Maybe a toga. So while her outfit was definitely "Americized", it wasn't that far from accurate. Obviously you can't do the no undies/toga thing, and the eagle crest is basically a modified breastplate. The "swimsuit" is just the DC equivalent to Hulk's stretchy pants.

The new outfit sucks wild donkey balls.

I'm not much of a Wonder Woman fan, so my knowledge of what's going on with her might be limited, but... I understaood that they're TOTALLY re-doing the origin story. She's lived her whole life in western society. PLUS they want to keep her "costume" low-key, something that might pass for street clothes.

So armor (even though I like the idea) is out. So is most flashy "Look I'm a superheroine" stuff.

The amazons were "the others", the foreigner, the alien people from scythia who the greeks looked with awe and suspicion.

Of course not, the odds of that are astronomical. There are probably just as many people who find the concept of greek amazons very plausible though statistically speaking.

There are tons of people who find all comic concepts silly though and some who didn't used to, they don't read comics anymore.

I was thinking, if she was never raised in a secluded island, she wouldn't be wearing any kind of costume at all. She will dress pretty much like any other women her age. If she decided to be a superheroine along the way, she would have chosen a much more 'mainstream' look. A full body spandex with bright colored motifs, for example. Maybe even a cape.
