Hey all,

I'm pretty heavily into Scott Pilgrim at the moment, and eagerly awaiting the last book - but the style has certainly pushed me to looking at some Manga. I've always loved Anime and am a big fan of Studio Ghibli in particular - but have never really looked at any Manga except Battle Royale (which I've never read).

What I'm really looking for is something fun and cartoony (like Scott Pilgrim) that would appeal to a guy my age (27 going on 28). I'm really into cartoony styles - so anything wildly out-there would certainly appeal. Anyone here read any Manga, have any ideas?

Thanks!

It's darker than what you're specifying, but Akira is great, and they're republishing it right now.

Ah good stuff - thanks Hap! I love the movie, so it might be worth me checking this out!

Thanks again!

One Piece is the greatest manga out there today-- easily one of the best ever created.

Cartoony and wildly out would most definately be One Piece. I can't think of any others that Ive read, maybe Naruto, that I would label as such but if you like hyper violence, nudity, cursing, mature content and action, most of the ones I read include those.

Berserk is my all time favourite manga but it doesn't fall anywhere near where you stated lol.

The best advice I can give is check out your local library, the system where I am has looks of manga. Thats how I starting reading alot of titles.

Seconding Berserk. It's not really cartoony or funny, but man if it isn't a fantastic story. He's been writing it for about 20 years now, and he probably has about 5 years left to go by the sound of it so there's plenty to read. It's not just one of the best manga, but one of the best comics ever written. You can find fan translated Berserk issues online, so it might be worth it to check those out if you're really not sure if it's your thing. But if you like it, buy it because goddamn will I be upset if he ever wraps up the series but it doesn't get released over here because of poor sales.

I liked Black Cat, that was a fun manga, though it did have moments of seriousness.

Also, Death Note. It's more serious than what you were asking, I think, but still a great read.

You guys are awesome, thanks so much for the recommends!

I'll check out ALL the pieces you recommended - yes, at the moment I'm looking for fun and cartoony, but as a comic reader my tastes are wide and varied - so I'll certainly be checking out some of the more serious books as I go along!

I'll have a look online now!

GTO!!! Great Teacher Onizuka!! It's very funny, yet has a bit of a realistic art style.

You can try reading Gon (http://1foe.com/gon/) if you haven't, or A Distant Neighborhood (http://1foe.com/a_distant_neighborhood) if you're into slice-of-life awesomeness. Also (and even though it's not manga), you will love bone (http://1foe.com/bone/) if you're into high-quality cartoony stuff.
