So my LCS had a sale on some recent Ultimate books, first issues for a buck apiece. I picked up the new Ultimate Spider-Man issue 1, and the first issue of Ultimatum (I never read any of Ultimatum, but I figured a buck wasn't too bad...)

Now I wish I had my 2 dollars back. Ultimatum was brutal. Disjointed storytelling, muddy, ugly art, and terrible characterization.

USM wasn't as bad, the Bendis writing was as good as his USM ever is, but the art was completely out of place. It looked like the worst wannabe manga art ever. Compeltely unimpressed.

Just goes to show: sometimes, the books ain't worth the $2.

I think the whole change in art is because Bendis wanted to try something different. I'd think after ten years, any writer would want to inject something fresh into their work to get it jumping again.

I know I would.

Wait, did you mean USM as Ultimate Spider-Man or Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man? They are two different titles, mind you. UC:SM was a relaunch post Ultimatum. Haven't read it, though.

The new Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man.

The original USM was fantastic. Can't do much better than Mark Bagley.

It's the new guy, Lafuente, who's art doesn't fit the story very well.
