Avatar is quickly becoming my favorite publisher. Between Warren Ellis' creator-owned stuff (Doktor Sleepless, No Hero, Black Summer, etc), and Garth Ennis' new Crossed series, these guys sure seem to be offering something different to these big creators. Guys like Frank Miller and Alan Moore and Jamie DeLano have all published work there.

Any thoughts?

As a creator it's a tough egg to crack.

But visually- I love what they are doing now.

Avatar is putting out lots of high quality comics, but due to their past I avoid them like the plague.

I Thought Black Summer was unreadable (visual) in some parts...But i liked that i had to work for it.

I hate safe formula boring bullshit comics. If comics ever want to be considered to be placed in the "higher art form" category ( which it should be at this point IMO because it is a pop cultural movement)- they need to be pushed more.

I respect Avatar for that. And i suppose that has a lot to do with who's running things. So kudo's to them for giving us something else.

I also like how they seem content on having the niche that they have. It's interesting.

Don't they just do a lot of Porn? I had submitted some stuff and the guy there said he could use me but as much as i like drawing nekkid wimmens, it wasn't for me. A friend of mine used to work for them. Jude Millien.

They have some good writers, but the art on their books doesn't do much for me.

What happened in the past? I'm only aware of the killer quality of books being released right now.

Ive enjoyed AVATAR for awhile now. Seems them and Dark horse are getting more of my money than IMAGE lately. Black Summer was great. I was flipping through some old comics and found Frank Miller's Robocop was penciled by Juan Jose Ryp same as Black Summer. He is definitly in a rare class of ultra violent artists!

Avatar is publishing good comics as far as I'm concerned.

The only problem I have as a reader, is that I have to WORK to find them, and then figure out if I've read the issue already or not. They seem to have 4+ 'alt covers' for every issue. Once they start collecting the stuff in trades, I think they will do quite well with getting it out there. The quality of the books is realy quite good.

Cheers,

Gibson

Oh man, you have to check out Warren Ellis's work at Avatar. Gravel, Doktor Sleepless, Black Summer, and now No Hero. Some of his best, most interesting work. Like Warren Ellis unleashed.
Much better than his company-owned work.

I love what Avatar is doing...and I like ultra violence and sex as much as the next fanboy, and Ennis is one of my all time favorites, BUT Crossed was/is a bit much for me.

there a lil too graphic for me. it's like going to buy manga and instead getting hentai......ok, that analogy was a little much, sorry :slap: . but you know what i mean. And besides juan ryp, dont like their art, and they confuse me with all the alt covers
