Back by popular demand (or just because Jamal is a masocist), the Digital Webbing Draw-Off Tourament of 2008 will start some time in October. So now is the time to speak up and tell me what you would like to see this year in the tournament.

I personally prefer the more open ended contests... for example rather then draw Hellboy... draw anyone that appears in Helboy comics... (not that I want to draw Hellboy and co. cuz I really dont, just an example.

Saw a draw Godzilla contest on another board, would have gladly entered if I coulda drawn any from the bestiary of Godzilla movies, but draw the main lizard himsself? no thanks...

Or drawing stuff that's not really a character. Like, "draw a tense scene" or something. *shrug*

Maybe some conceptual stuff, like environments or industrial design could be incorporated. I'd love to see multiple interpretations of Arkham for example, or new sentinel designs.

How about a prize?

-Art in a DW book or some other publisher would be a great prize--even a pin-up would be cool.

-a year's premium memebership

-some comics

-art supplies (maybe a gift certificate from Blueline, etc.)

Not saying anybody on the site should front some dough for this, maybe somebody would sponser it. This would add some juice to the contest and get/keep people involved---less no-shows would be great.

Maybe some movie or tv related challenges.

I loved it the year where you had situational challenges, with characters doing things, such as having a drink with an enemy or hero vs. enemy, etc. It really made you have to think creatively as you would when you are doing sequentials as opposed to doing a pinup. :)

Transformers, Batman, Ghostbusters, Goonies and Thundarr!

I wanna be in group 3!

Ive always been a big fan of character reinterpritations(sp?) i.e. elseworld type shtuff....

I like the idea of doing things other then pinups tho (with some pinups) like people doing stuff, hero vs villain etc that someone above mentioned...

So whens this shindig start? Im chomping at the bit!

I'd like to see little caricatures of superheroes (like Bullpen Bits) but based on any page or covers straight out of their comic books. For example you choose a popular comic book cover/memorable page and turn all the characters into chibi/toon versions of themselves. I imagine it'd be fun to see.

Or, just do parodies of comic book covers.

How about.............

draw something from your life...like your kids, sister, mother, etc.,

Or..........how about a new hair style for Superman? The mullet from a few years back was horrible.

Anyone remember an old cartoon .had to do with guys in space with ..........I think it was spacehawks? or something like that...........

Or characters from Alice in Wonderland.. Or the Grimm fairytales.

Just some suggestions... :sure:

Meathawg

Ooooh I love redesinging fairy tales.... I second that motion. And the spacehawks were the guys that flew around space all dressed in shiny metal skintight armor....

on that note maybe redesgin obscure toy/cartoon characters from the 80s...

insektoids, herculoids, thundaarr and co etc etc... Hell would be fun to do some guys from the ole laughalympics cartoons...

soooo whens this start :D

Thanks for bringing this back! I got here too late to participate in the last one, and I hope I can find time to participate in this one.

As for me, I would prefer challenges that do not include particular existing characters, but instead force the contestants to create their own characters from scratch.

Anything cool and different would be good, also some cool prizes and some specific rules on voting, maybe a points based system a la olympics. :)

Also different categories for people to compete in, instead of all doing the same thing since some people are better at some things and worse at others.

I can't wait to get started again. I liked it when they were topics. For examples: Draw a sc-fi scene, or create a Pulp cover, or draw what goes bump-in-the-night, or create an alien race, or reinvent characters from Alice In Wonderland/Wizard of Oz. I just want it to be FUN....FREAK

Probably too much trouble to be worthwhile, but just an idea I had- run a Write-off Tournament simultaneously, and team up the semi-finalists at the end.

problem with some of those ideas is the time constraints. A lot of people are too busy to actually do a finished cover in a weeks time.

I like stuff that is steeped in comic books.... indy mainstream uber-mainstream... whatever as long as it is comics based. I know there are a lot of requests here for 80's cartoon cult movies and such so I am the minority.. but just voicing my humble opinion.
And I like the versus stuff.. classic or fights you always wanted to see.
And I like stuff that suggests a format... a splash page, a pinup.. character design.. sequential... a cover... whatever.. change it up through out the tourney and I will be happy for as long as I get to play.
I feel the redesigns have been done like crazy in the last year or so, so not neccassary for the tourny.
And as far as books that I would LOVE to draw from:
Invincible
Runaways
Nightwing
Green Lantern
Spidey
Wolvie
Shazam (a sins/virtues round would be great from this book)
Poison Elves
Madman
and Teen Titans

Hope this helps.

i'll give it a try this time. all i ask is the categories are more varied. as for the issues of drop outs maybe try more categories that contain mainstream characters/comics/games/movies. i dunno :)

Doomsmith

I really liked it when you had the Last Man Standing type of setup where everyone drew avatars of themselves (screen names) and had to draw you and the person you were paired up with in battle. But it went out of control via Mortal Kombat style, not that it mattered to me since I came out on top.

Maybe this time around kinda incorporate that with maybe interactions with established characters and situations. That should keep it interesting, what do the rest of you think about that?
