I have the blue staedtler and am still confused if it could be emptied out.

1) Put it over a waste basket
2) Remove top
3) Empty contents into trash. Tap sides and bottom to get the lead powder out.
4) Replace top

Note: be careful when you open it so you don't get dust all over the place. May have to wash hands afterword before continueing to work.

The best way I found to do it, is to dump it into a sandwich bag, tie that off with a twist tie, then toss the baggie into the main trash. Minimal dust and it won't spread / get blown all over the place.

Ah...I thought you could remove the top lid and just dump it out, I remember adam hughes has his where he could remove the top. How do you know when its fulls?

You can remove the black top of course.

How do you know when its fulls?

It's full when it doesn't point the lead as sharply, it becomes more difficult to turn and there is an excess of graphite dust on the pointed lead when you remove it. Just get into the habit of emptying it every few days or once a week or so. 'Cuz if you leave it until it's absolutely full it's almost a law that you'll end up overturning the pointer at some point, the lid'll come off and---well---you know how that story ends.

Lol, I just found out the lid lifts up okay!!! Seriously, when I tried pulling off the lid in the past, I thought I was gonna break it.
