I treated myself to this super-cool Kirby style Mister Miracle figure. But then I showed a pic to my friend and he quips "Captain Fruitcake", I was like, "Kinda catchy"...I think MM is badass, but yeah anyway...

Who in comics comes off as fruity even tho they are pretty badass?

almost all of em, I know. but yeah, whose your favorite?

I agree, but it's still fruity as hell.

ya know, now that i think about it. Back in the 60's-70's comics days, those fruity suits probably came off as kick-ass and hi-concept to people back then. Now? fruity!

Also: Oh no I di'int!

Exactly.

Though to be fair, those fruity suits come off a little less fruity when rendered in a more modern style, i.e.:

Okay, still fruity, but at least they also look kinda badass.

Really though, the reason a lot of these dudes are decked out in garish colours is just 'cause that's all artists at that time had to work with.

And I guess because it makes characters stand out, or whatever.

I getcha. the big G and Doc would not have become as memorable and long-lasting if they weren't designed the way they are.

I understand Galactus having a fruity costume but Dr Strange?! Compared to Galactus' costume, his costume really doesn't seem fruity

Right, because we all know what the alternative to garish costume design is:

I seriously hate that character and his costume is absolutely the most ridiculous, dated design imaginable.

Cable. With all that hardware and shoulder pads pockets and huge guns and stuff, clearly he's over-compensating for something...

poor Plas...if the worst costume is in doubt just check out his partner Hula-Hula in the yellow and orange flowered shirt...
(or that funky Woozy Winks for that matter..polka-dots..?)

Man, Plas isn't even close to having the fruitiest costume. In fact, I'd say his is one of the few from that era that still holds up fairly well today.

Newt

He doesn't need to see, he just senses disturbances in his badassery field. Like an electric fish.

Seriously ... that one episode of Justice League he was in was the WORST episode of the entire series. I think the episode was supposed to be styled after Kirby, but it just looked like shit, IMHO.

The costume is supposed to look ridiculous. It was a humiliation put on the character. The chemicals that gave him his powers dissolved any other clothing he tried to use them on. The circus outfit was the only thing that survived that he could wear and use his power.

So? Just because it might have a reason to look stupid doesn't make it okay in my book. Any weakly devised plot that gave him that stupid looking thing could be retconned in one-issue if they wanted. But they don't want to, and I understand why ... it's incredibly popular with fans. Just not with me. That's why I would love to write the character (and Metamorpho, too) but would never accept the job if DC offered, because I'd want to make them less ridiculous. But what I call "ridiculous" is exactly what fans love about the characters, so any changes I could come up with would not be well received. It would be fun, though.

Similarly, I was thinking of doing a television show for The Shining. Only it'd be a sitcom and Jack Nicholson could make all those funny faces and Shelly Duval could be just like Lucile Ball when she screams, "Jack, NOOOOO!!!!" I don't think people would get it though... :man:

Sure, but that doesn't mean I like his costume. He could look different and still be just as funny. It just doesn't click with me.
