Just a rumor for now. Yet the character made famous by Harrison Ford, and derailed by Affleck maybe getting a restart. Ryan Gosling maybe stepping into the role. The film will not be based on any of the books.
The rumor apparently comes from the mouth of director Philip Noyce who said that there is a new Jack Ryan movie in the works, but neither he nor Ford are involved, and that it was gonna star Gosling. He also is quoted as saying that the new film will be called BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.

No Tom Clancy...No Jack Ryan. Know Tom Clancy...Know Jack Ryan.
I know this doesn't matter, Bond without Flemming was still successful, but I don't lik Ryan Gosling in the role. I would rather have seen Liev Shcriber (SP) the guy that played Clark in the sum of all fears, take on this role.
too bad...I just don't think gosling's a fit
looks like someone is trying to cash in on the success of Bourne and the rejuvenated Bond series...too bad. I love Ford BUT Hunt for Red October is still the best of the bunch...Baldwin was the PERFECT Ryan. Affleck was a joke. Gosling is not even n the ball park. But then again..Damon was not really in the Bourne ballpark either and that seemed to work. The difference is there was only one preceding movie with Bourne, a really poor TV miniseries from the 80's starting Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith. With the Jack Ryan series you have some big shoes to fill..I think it may have a harder time finding a non-critical audience.

Hahahaha!
I thought I was the only one who saw the Richard Chamberlain - Bourne movie.
Whew that was bad.

Actually, the Bourne mini-series was pretty good, performed highly in the ratings back then, and is much more faithful to the novel than the Damon film, which is more exciting I grant you, but the mini-series touches on the espionage and suspense/mystery aspects a little better.

If you can get past Jaclyn Smith's screaming every five minutes..She was just about up there with Kate Capshaw in Temple of Doom.

That was mainly in the scenes where Bourne first kidnapped her (fair enough) and then was almost raped by one of the baddies (again, fair enough), both of which took place in part 1. Apart from that, she was fairly silent.

Baldwin in my books was THE perfect Jack Ryan character. Hunt For Red October was the best film adaptation of a Tom Clancy novel. I don't really care for the others that followed. Harrison was too gruff and old, Affleck was far too young....making Baldwin's inbetween age (at the time he made it) spot on character.

Whoa, totally forgot about the Affleck/Jack Ryan flick. I was THIS close to erasing it from my conscious continuity. I loved the other flicks, with (again) The Hunt For Red October being my favorite. Baldwin was teh shit!

Ford was better in the role than either Affleck (woefully miscast) or Baldwin, but I agree, he was too old by that stage. Baldwin was the right age, but a little lifeless in the role I felt.

SO who does that leave us with today?
Baldwin is now post prime, Harrison ford is wayyy out, and Affleck...well ya know...anyone else from today's Next Gen?

I beg to differ. Baldwin's acting fit the character of Jack Ryan...Ford was...well...Ford. The man did the same performance in Air Force One. Not a whole lot of range if you ask me.

This is crap. There is no younger Ryan. He was never a spy; he was an analyst and a history teacher. The only real field experience he had was early on as a Marine and his career was ended by a helicopter crash. There is nothing to go back to. At best this is going to be a Bourne rip-off, at worst a poor James Bond. :man: :yuk:

According to AICN, which I'm assuming is where Mwynn is sourcing his info, the studio is trying to decide whether to follow the Clancy books or take a leaf from the James Bond crowd and start some original stories. Nothing finalised as of yet.

We had a younger Jack Ryan in Sum of All Fears. If they want another spy movie then why not use John Clark. His character totally stole the spotlight in Sum, and a Rainbow Six movie series is not such a bad idea. The game was an adaptation of the novel anyway.
I say if you want another Jack Ryan movie, bring back Alec Baldwin and put him in the president's chair already.

Agreed. He's not an action figure...he's a thinker and problem solver. Passionate, yes...even a bit obsessive (like in Red October), but never one to grab a gun and yell "Yo, Joe!". I liked him in the first film because for once there was a real character you could believe in, he was outside the military (an ex-marine that wrote books on strategy and historical analysis), had a family and clearly a work-a-holic.
Every other Jack Ryan movie to follow was utter crap.

We had a younger Jack Ryan in sum of all fears because it was a shit movie. :man:
And actually he (Jack Ryan) did not have that big a role in Sum of All Fears. He was working the administrative side mostly and Clark pulled all the field ops. As much as 1/4 to 1/3 was dedicated to the construction of the bomb by the terrorist and how they got it into the US.
The best movies to make would be the book Without Remorse, which is a killer John Clark book-no Jack Ryan. Ryan's dad has a small part as a cop investigating some revenge murders... Any military looking dude could pull it off. You could even update it, bring it into the current political arena and place his rescue in Arabia against some terrorist instead of Viet Nam. All the other stuff could stay the same. Ethan Hawke or Josh Harnett would make good "Young" John Clarks.
If you want an american spy franchise this is the better way to go. You could follow Clark from operative all the way up to commander- which he is essentaily the boss in the first Rainbow Six book.

Paramount is desperate for a new franchise, hence trying to turn a young Jack Ryan into some kind of action hero. No wonder Tom Clancy can't stand Paramount.

Do you mean James Franco?
James Franco would be a better choice than Ryan Gosling. Franco has a better chance at making a non-Clancy Jack Ryan more marketable, since he's been in more high profile movies. Gosling really only has the Notebook.

Yeah, except if you actually see Franco's body of work he always has the range of a dimwit. The way he talks makes him seem a bit slow in the head.

You mean MLB's All-Time left-handed saves leader? I didn't know he was making the Hollywood jump. Hmm, almost as interesting as hiring Raimi to direct. :)

So, he'll turn in an Oscar-worthy performance, but the rest of the crew will drop the ball?
