Hey thanks for posting these. They give me a good idea about what I need do when I work a con. It seems you use a lot of markers to get the drawing down quick. :)

Absolute Stunning 30 Min work here....but then again what else should be expected from you :kewl: ;) Say uh...how long have you been doing this. Your rendering and colors are fantastic.

SJames
01-16-2008, 09:06 PM
heh- I didn't think the quick stuff would garnish much of a response?! Hell I'm not complaining!!....just glad ya dig! :)

xaltair- thanks not all are good mind you I try to limit the time to around 30 min to make it more cost conducive. I started doing the marks because it gave a more finish look and the fan feels the got somthin' worth while weather I think is is or NOT!

J^2- thanks and yep!

badapple- thanks there is a crap load O' SHITE I have done at cons that I won't post..but the fans always seem to dig though I might not! I have been working pro since 1995 roughly 10-11 years. I'm still workin' on the coloring thing at times there are things I like and other times I fail miserably!

here are a few more con sketches the 3/4 to full figures took about an hour ! I hope ya dig !!

Man, I still kick myself in the ass for not continuing to draw after high school which was in 95' :slap: :slap: :slap: Well I can't do anything to change that. All I can do is bust my ass twice as much to catch up. Great Job on these Scott

I don't wanna be that guy, but the Obi-Wan is a direct rip on an Adam Hughes Piece:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o309/sjames21/comish_b-green_catwoman-zatanna150.jpgFor a convention quickie, it's great, but in general? Bad anatomy assaults good picture, film at 11. Catwoman's poor stomach... ack. The chest squish seems a bit off too, but considering most of the times I've seen two busty girls kissing my mind has been far too busy to be analytical, I can't really tell you why... ^_^I don't wanna be that guy, but the Obi-Wan is a direct rip on an Adam Hughes Piece:

*SNIP*

And I know because the original is on my wall. How many different ways can you position a head for a side shot like that? And are you really the person to be commenting on 'direct rips', dear?

SJames
01-17-2008, 08:13 AM
the Obi wan was done in a way after AH...not directly meaning!! he does a great OBI wan and when a fan ask I did and went from memory off the great depiction Adam did ....it was not hard since I have stared at the AH! version for hours!( Kudos on the piece color me envious) it was done on a sketch card and is signed on the back After AH! sorry I did not state it earlier in my hast to post i did not realized I had not signed the card on the front...my bad!!! :slap: just like i did this bat man after Toth!

EXCUSE ME? For starters, it IS a direct take on that image, practically line for line and as for ME ripping anyone off, that's BULLSHIT!

SJames
01-17-2008, 08:39 AM
TDHodges- your right is is after AH! I don't deny that! but to say it's line for line ...I don't know about that?!....his is a hell of a lot more elegant than my con scribblings...hell I'd be please if one line match exactly to his! :) Again as I stated before it is sign After AH! on the back! Sorry for not posting that earlier ...about you swiping ?... I no nothing of it so can't comment I dig your stuff though! :)

JoeHundredaire - I totally know what you mean about the bodies! I focused the majority of the time on the faces that was about 45 min

here is a blink I did for a fan this was about 2 hrs!

ahh! at last! some new art from the great scott james! no more reptative drawings posted again and again!

lovely sketches dude, my only crit is on zatanna and catwoman, they seem to be thrown at each other from opposite ddirection and they have hit each other on the lips, i feel no passion or intrest between them, all in all, great stuff you've got there.

SJames
01-17-2008, 09:38 AM
TDHodges -I wish I would have too....like i stated in my hastiness to post...I over looked that Obi was not signed! I am a huge AH! fan and he is a major influence espacaily when it comes to drawin' women!!! OH and Mate I nothing but respect for your work and Like I stated the comment was news to me! :)

captainarian- you ball buster you!!!! :) I was throw with the C&Z request if I were to do it over again and there is a strong chance I will!!!...I will add that passion but being at a con were kids are watching you draw I tried to make it more innocent than passionate like them playing truth or dare?!.... that and it was done in about 30 min!

Sweet Blink. I've gotten a few people to do inkwash portraits for me with just one feature in color. It really makes things stand out, especially when you have such a unique physical feature as the pink hair.

SJames, as long as you know you based on that piece and you're cool saying so, I apologize. I never meant to say "rip-off", it was a direct take and looking at your stuff, I dig it.

As for myself being called out as a "rip-off" artist, I guess I shouldn't be too upset since it is coming from a self-indulgent fan fiction/"slash" writer.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o309/sjames21/galactacus.jpgThink you posted this while I was posting one of my other replies. How big is this one, man? The scan doesn't give a proper sense of perspective, but if this is 11" x 14" or bigger, that's gotta be seriously awe-inspiring. It kinda made me giggle at the one piece my friend brought back from a con of Galactus; he didn't even take up the entire page of what? 8" x 10"? Or is 8.5" by 11" for you guys? I tend to think in 4:5 ratio stuff from my photography.

Phenomenal cosmic power... itty-bitty living space.

And know your lingo, darling. I do femmeslash, along with het and general fanfiction. Slash is generally only the male-on-male action these days, just to avoid confusion.

JoeHundredaire- I'm glad you like the Blink!! it was technically suppose to be a black and white I thought the pink was a nice touch ! :) the galacticus was done in Detroit last year and the paper was enormous ...supplied by the fan! :man:

TDHodges- thanks for the apology....but no need if the shoe were on the other foot my response would have been similar! :)

W. Smith- I thought you was W. Smith?!.....if my name was Rick....I get it! if that is the ref I get it!!!

for the rest of the posts I'm sorry but I'm lost...in my own thread even! must be an inside joke?!

Why do you people know this stuff...Never mind, I've no need to know (nor desire really)Fanfiction has a whole little language of its own terms that have spread to fanart (or vice versa, never was especially sure which) that's used to communicate in summary form what's in a story. Basically, to cut down on the number of people who wander into your story, read it, flip shit, and email you to complain. Because we both know the people who would get their kicks out of male-on-male (slash) fiction and female-on-female (femmeslash) fiction are pretty much two completely different groups with very little overlap. And not just in a sexual sense; some people can't stand the idea of even two men or two women being in a committed relationship (look at all the anti-gay marriage stuff). This serves as a warning sign... that a good percentage of people still ignore. :)

And I like the Wonder Twins in theory, even though I lack the comic knowledge to actually get what the joke is. I have a vague idea, but I imagine I'd laugh harder if I'd read the appropriate comic...

OK....Um I love the lesbians and I am a lesbian trapped in a man's body !!! LOL I do not appose gays or gay issues...I just don't understand...the attraction and probably never will! it does not mean i don't wish or hope they have a happy and joyous union with their mate...it just means I don't understand the looking at another man's Hairy Arse ans saying ...oh ya i want that!LOL It doesn't mean I'm ignoring it it just means i don't get it

Now I know what Slash is and "Knowing is half the battle!!" Go Joe!

the wonder twins are fraternal twins! :har:...insest

SJames, Chicago is still a decent show. I did it the last 2 years and despite what some folks have said, I've had pretty good shows.

To be honest I think your work is very derivative of Adam Hughes and lacking the merits which make him an excellent artist, especially his sense of dynamics and correct anatomy. The sketch of the girl with her arms above her head/being covered, though not a unpopular pose, is also familar to a AH sketch ive seen over at Comic Art Community. The joker sketch is also very similar to Jim Lee's interpretation of the character. Im not sure if these were done as a homage or have already been stated as such but I suggest that you distance yourself from these obvious big influences and develop a take of your own.

If you come ta my neck and I'll get a table...and buy ya a Mr. Beef! ;) I have just had problems with placement and the micro management of it! it use to be more artist friendly...now they will stick an artist behind a support beam and charge them $300 and the back drop rule only applies to those they choose to apply it to! don't get me wrong I love going to the show. but it has become more corporate! they no longer feel the need to accommodate the artist, creater or publisher...hence the decline in attendance of fans and publishers!

if you read the thread these were done as con sketches or con style commissions!! Often fans ask for characters styles and certain depictions of what they want and I'll be the first to state there are anatomy flaws hell in 20- 30 min I'm surprised there is not more problems with them! LOL the girl with the arms over her head janna and the pose was more commonly known as the janet jackson Rolling Stone cover! My version was a spoof and if my joker is lee like hell I'll take that as a complement!!! He did a great joker! thanks for the advice

i used to use it back in the day and would get some cool effects

For pics that usually take only 30 mins, I gotta say these are awesome. As for your drawing influences from other artists, so the heck what. You make the pictures your own and change them enough so that they are in no way rip offs. Just my opinion. Wish I could sell my 30 min sketches for 50 bucks.

SJames
01-18-2008, 11:48 AM
KUEMAN- thanks man I dig the good Dr.!

evolver - I'm using liquid paper and paint pens

domja- they are influences not direct derivatives of said artist!! the obi wan and bats were done after certain pics but the rest encompass the artists that influence me!

The first 2 took about 30 min the Ghost took about an hour and a half!
