Reading the last few issues last night, I think Captain America's going to be someone much closer to the shitstorm than anyone expected...

Outside of the World War Hulk (which are so few and far between) books, Cap is the only MARVEL book I look forward to hitting the stands.

Captain America is a pretty amazing book. I'm totally hooked.
So, is Bucky TOO obvious a choice to become Cap? If not, then who? It's not Sam/Falcon, obviously.
And how long until those Arctic waters rejuvenate Steve Rogers? Hmmm.

so you went to the store, gathered up all the books and sat down and read them all? beginning to end? got the entirety of the story, one of which is considered one of the better stories running thru marvel right now. you did that. and its all "horrid" then?
you didnt just..flip thru them...trying to get the "jist" of it. you READ them.

So what's a good superhero story then? Cause Cap's been one of the only books that keeps the story riveting, I seriously want to know what you deem worthy as a book.

This thread turned into more a discussion of Cap comics in general and less what it was supposed to be about... What are peoples thoughts on a return of Captain America? Especially with Marvel's plans to keep Steve dead.
I for one agree that Captain America is a classic character and wish that if they were truly gonna kill him, that they do it better than they did...
The world NEEDS a Captain America, but a gun weilding Captain America? That to me was always what i loved about him... he could do anythign he wanted, generally without the need for any kind of firearm. What message is that really sending? Hero's need to tote a gun now to enforce justice? Is that not partly why The Punisher is considered an Anti-Hero by many? (well, that and his Vigilante-ism.) Do we really want to give an American Icon such an image? What message does that release around the world? That a being dressed in the garb of our most glorious symbol is now waving a gun around? How does that push our image as American's around the world?
I think that Marvel is making a HUGE mistake with this, and its almost disrespectful to the character. You never would have caught Steve Rogers running around like that. I know, some of you fans out there are gonna burn me for this... start to spout off issue numbers and whatnot to counter this, but you notice there are only issue NUMBERS. not an overall majority of his series.
OKay, i am done ranting... flame away!!!

are YOU even reading the book. ( i dont recall you ever saying you actually do). first...yes..cap IS iconic. nothing changed there. the character steve rogers is just dead. (for now)
"what message is this sending" you say? come on. who says it HAS to be sending a message? and maybe it IS sending a message, and that message is exactly what you are saying here... that this replacement cap is gonna have a gun, and origional cap didnt and that sucks and is not good. maybe the books making the same point you are. why not wait for the story to be told and lets see where its going.
"what message does this send to the world"? you say..."dressed in the garb or our most glorious symbol"? "how does this push our image of america around the world"? man... do you even pay attention to the fact that america is a gun toting, gun weilding, gun loving, mass killing "from my cold dead hands" nation? hell...cap packing MULTIPLE machine guns would be a truer reflection of just what "America" is in the moderen age.
a kind, compassionate, color blind, non-discriminatory "america" like the steve rogers captain america? riiight.... thats us.
maybe thats why they killed him in the first place.. to show America may be dead. or is dying.

Actually, I gotta give it to Brubaker... this arc with just the supporting cast has been the most interesting Cap storyline in years. I forgot who made this analogy, but it's like Brubaker's writing Cap like its "24," mixing the superhero elements (AIM, Red Skull, Dr. Faustus) with a grounded, more-realistic tone.
Keep Steve dead. I like this book more as an ensemble piece.

This is my favorite book of them all right now. Brubaker is my favorite right now, big time. I love Iron Fist and Daredevil along with Cap.

I really want this to be Clint, but Winter solider would be fine too. I know plenty of people who said clint already turned down the chance to be the new cap.. but no. He turned down the chance to be Tony Stark and the Initiatives Cap

My money's on the Winter Soldier...it's the only justifiable reason for being Bucky back.
Though the series itself has been incredible since Brubaker took over...

Didn't Marvel already replace Steve as Cap and replace him with a harsher model around 20 years ago? Way to go for anything even remotely resembling something original

The stories are vastly different.
Besides, when we're talking about decades-spanning, never-ending narratives -- serial superhero comics -- certain elements are bound to be reused, certain themes revisited. In that context, I don't think twice in 20 years seems too egregious.

I was thinking Hawkeye myself. Winter Soldier's just too obvious a choice. US Agent's in Canada right now, and I don't think they'll replace Cap with him again. Unless Tony sent him up North as some sort of pre-training to see if he'd be worthy of doing it. It's got to be Tony or Clint, in my opinion.
Way to kill the mystery, Marvel :sure: !

Maybe Brubaker will throw us a nice curve ball. The Red Skull/Lukin and Fastaus keep talking smack about how their mega-super-ultra evil plan for world domination is only just beginning, so perhaps they will exert some form of control over the new Captain America.
Like how the Red Skull is essentially a "spirit" that has to have a host now thanks to the Cosmic Cube's trippy effects. Brubaker has a lot to play with here and could give us something really crazy.
I'm hoping for something crazy. :)

The Chosen isn't canon, Cap is dying as his serum wears off and he dies from age in it. It won't be the marine.
I'll be Bucky.

I'd make a really poor Bucky... I'm fat and deaf in one ear. I'd make a good Fat Abe Lincoln.

Hmm...So it really is Bucky as Captain Puerto Rico. And he's doing it because Steve wanted him to. Sounds kinda weird, as if Steve knows he's gonna get killed.

It's from a lawyer, Steve could have given the lawyer the letter well before Civil War with the instructions to send it to the director of SHIELD upon his death.
I thought it was a little rushed... no debate on Bucky's part... just "okay, I'll do it". Makes you wonder if there's more to the letter.
