Back when he was young and apparently funny (I'm not much of a fan otherwise)...but DAMN!

It's always surprised me that I don't like Mr Bean, 'cos Atkinson's face is just made for visual comedy. Have you seen any of 'Not the Nine O'Clock News'? Early '80s sketch show including the talents of Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones, as well as RA. There's lots of stuff on YouTube (http://youtube.com/results?search_query=not+the+nine+o%27clock+news) .

My favourite character of his is Blackadder, though, where a lot of the comedy is in the script.

I agree with you completely. Almost everything of his i like it's script and not physical. How very odd.

Netflix has the 2-disc Best of Not the 9 o'Clock News set. Atkinson is funny but Mel Smith (who I had only seen in the movie Brain Donors) was just as good and it showed how Pamela Stephenson was wasted by the writers of SNL the season she was in the cast.

Mel Smith and Griff Rhys-Jones had their own sketch show - Alas Smith and Jones. They did this regular thing where the two of them faced each other over a table - here's one! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EznaCNcAehU) :w00t:

I think sometimes Rowan Atkinson is ageless, he looks the same now as he did back then.

I saw this years ago on Comedy Central. It was brilliant then, and still is now. It was the last 'skit' he did in an hour+ stand up set. If you get the chance to see the entire thing, I suggest you take it. The subway scene, and the Medieval King skit were also pretty darned hilarious.
