so i got soaked in the rain along with the comics i bought. i'm trying to use this as a way to stop the collecting--not the reading. but i really want to get into thinking of comics the way i do people magazine or the newspaper--recyclable. even tho, i'm sure i'll just keep the ruined comics anyway.

That's the spirit! There's little to be gained from "collecting" comics. Read them, enjoy them, and, when appropriate, pass them on.

I'm really hoping to start seeing the collections in libraries.
I'm sure they are in some places, I just haven't seen it with the esception os Maus.
But with the plethora of Trades now, it seems more likely.

Really? A lot of libraries now have comics sections.
(I even started the section at the little library in the neighboring county by donating a bunch of trades and manga.)

Lawrence does too, both towns have really good, progressive libraries. Lucky us.

I don't see why someone would want to just read them and not collect them. Even a few titles a month.

Yeah, I don't get the collector mentality. Do you win a prize if you collect 'em all?

Hey now, nothing wrong with collecting as long as you've got space. I keep them right next to my National Geographics (I've got some from the early 80's). :nyah:

I collect for entertainment, not for profit.

these things take up space, and it gets to a point where you have to make a choice between stuff and order.

it's habitual. count yourself lucky if you don't do this. there's also the hopes in the back of your mind that something will be worth money in the future. but mostly it's wanting to hold onto these "works of art". i have no trouble recycling a trade by bringing it to the library

Some people do like to go back and re-read the stories.

Sure, I hold on to some comics, too. But I periodically sort through what I have and give them to other people, or donate them to a local library.
And no little plastic coffins, or Mylar body bags.

I don't buy comics much anymore, so Kevin sends me "care packages." Don't you just love him?
Really though of the many comics I was collecting, I can't say how many I actually went back and read. 1% maybe?

Comics should only be collected the same way you would collect a DVD.
Comic collecting is part of the reason comics as a whole are frowned upon.

I can see that maybe the obsessive collecting mentality of some fans adds to the perception of the overly intense fanboy culture of the hobby...but that seems like more of a parallel aspect. In other words, remove the more intense fan elements and the collectors just seem like...collectors, instead of obsessive lunatics.

I was the same, but now I'm slowly changing over from getting a single issue a month to trades.
