I use to own a Whippet - and though they were bred from various terriers and English and Italian greyhounds, it might appear that I'm in support of artifical selection for some critters, but truth be told, I'm only in support of those animals that stay within their own species.

Well...mainly because...

So what do people think of the use of artificial selection in the domestication of plants and animals?

the artifical selection kind of forces the natural evolution of the species involved. any life form put into an alien environment must either adapt, or die. if the environment is extreme enough and it adapts, then there is a forced evolution taking place via the artifical selection.

im not even going to work the whole domestication thing in here as i'm just annoying newt by discussing evolution :nyah:

What makes selective breeding 'selective' is the practice of artificial selection. Natural selection was named directly after artificial selection, as it, too, acts on individuals with differing traits.

Cross-breeding is not selection.

Do you even know what artificial selection means?

I thought it meant this:

Medical Dictionary
Human intervention in animal or plant reproduction to ensure that certain desirable traits are represented in successive generations.

Science Dictionary
The breeding of plants and animals to produce desirable traits. Organisms with the desired traits, such as size or taste, are artificially mated or cross-pollinated with organisms with similar desired traits.

Whippets were bred purposely for specific desirable traits in the terriers and greyhounds.....my pup was a mutant dog I tell ya!

Your Science Dictionary is using confusing terminology. Artificial selection occurs within a stock- individuals with desirable traits are bred with other individuals with similar traits, or if none are available, with their own close relatives. Cross-breeding is done to enlarge the pool of traits and trait-combinations in a stock; it allows artificial selection, but is not itself artificial selection. Mutation involves the appearance of novel traits not present in the parents- they are the root source of the variation in traits which is acted upon by both artificial and natural selection.

Ron Burgundy: I'm sorry, I was trying to impress you. I don't know what it means. I'll be honest, I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.

Ron Burgundy: Agree to disagree.

Newt

Exactly! I'm with you on this one!

Okay, let me try again. The point of artificial selection is to fix a particular trait in a breeding stock; so let's say you want curly-haired greyhounds.

By pure happenstance, one of your greyhounds has curly hair; from here, you can either try to find another curly-haired greyhound of the opposite sex and breed them; failing that, you can breed your curly-haired dog with its own parent, working on the likelihood that the parent carries 'curly' genes but does not express them. You do not allow any of your plain greyhounds to breed with this curly-haired stock.

Either way, you now have a litter of puppies. Most likely some will be curly-haired and some will not; you keep only the curlies in your breeding stock.

This is artificial selection. You are trying to narrow the variation in this trait to zero.

Case B.

You have a plain old greyhound, but you want a greyhound with curly hair. So, you breed your greyhound to a Maltese. This is not artificial selection; you are not breeding dogs with the same traits together in order to fix the traits. What you are doing is increasing the variation in many traits. You can begin the process of artificial selection with the puppies produced by this pairing, but the initial pairing does not itself constitute selection.

Does that help?

The DarkMind
10-09-2007, 07:13 PM
no... breeding an animal with its own parent is just sick man...SICK. it depletes the genetic variety and over time of interbreeding causes many undesirable traits. DIDNT YOU WATCH WATERWORLD????? YOU NEED VARIETY IN A GENEPOOL TO KEEP A SPECIES ALIVE AND THRIVING!

Ron Burgundy: I'm a man who discovered the wheel and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. That's what kind of man I am. You're just a woman with a small brain. With a brain a third the size of us. It's science.
Veronica Corningstone: I will have you know that I have more talent and more intelligence in my little finger than you do in your entire body, sir.
Ron Burgundy: You are a smelly pirate hooker.
Veronica Corningstone: You look like a blueberry.
Ron Burgundy: Why don't you go back to your home on Whore Island?
Veronica Corningstone: Well, you have bad hair.

I hate to tell you this, but that's how pretty much every 'pure' breed of domestic animal has come about. Even the breeds with long histories can usually be traced back to a single sire a few centuries back. That's why mutts are great!
