i'm planning to get a digital camera with a price range of $500. any suggestions?

the dollar is going down here that the only thing to do with it right now is order something in the states to get something of the same value as when my girlfriend first saved the dollars she converted from peso.

we were planning on adding a few more for an SLR, but i told her it would not be a good SLR, so we decided on a handy version under $500 value. :)

any advise?

Canon Powershot G9.

I haven't used this particular camera, but I've had good luck with Canon and this thing comes highly recommended and is feature-stuffed.

Well I don't know what's out there or how things rate against each other but I have a Sony Cybershot, 7.2 megapixels. Its a few years old now but it's small enough to stuff in a shirt pocket and takes pretty good pictures.

The newer Cybershot is 8.1 megapixel, I think. It's also got higher optical zoom (15X vs. 6X) than the Powershot and is a bit cheaper.

Generally, anything from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, or Sony (now that it's absorbed Minolta) will be pretty reliable and will have lots of accessories available. When you start looking at other brands, it's more hit-or-miss.

I have 5 ebay accounts and an ebay store. I sell my items and otherpeoplesitems...I use this camera only...we sell a lot of stuff useing this camera....if your looking for a work horse you will like this if you want a Im a Photographer the you will need higher meg pix's res.

remember this camera uses min CD's that are cheap and can be used on most pc's to down load or use the USB wire that comes with the camera..you can even view the pics on camera and zoom on them...or view the movies you take on camera or wire to you TV! its a trip and easy.

g9? whats that? ebay CD's cheap this is a 50 pack...http://cgi.ebay.com/New-MEMOREX-24-POCKET-CD-R-50PK-SPINDLE_W0QQitemZ300067022431QQihZ020QQcategoryZ41 795QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

it is very bulky...but as a camera I treat it like an expensive art tool..

say like a laptop...
Canon is an excellent brand...but I spell Sony UFO...they have features beyond the norm...mini CD's...I have made music video's for local rock bands that repezent them...they hand out as their business card.

Whatever you buy, don't fall for "digital zoom". Only optical zoom actually gets you more image detail at higher magnification. Olympus has a nice line of "Ultra Zoom" models that pack some pretty good (non-interchangeable) zoom optics into a mini-SLR-style body.
