Pierogies are Pittsburgh and the Maple Syrup on Fries is something new they are doing. A few places are even serving sweet potato fries.

Nope. I jokingly added 500 to "No," then subtracted them. That's it; nobody else has edited anything in the poll.

I voted for "I like them okay" then a few minutes later, the vote was changed to "no", now it's back to "I like them okay" (assuming I'm the only person who voted for that option).

They will pretty much do that anywhere if you ask. One place started it and everyone else copied them though. Can not remember who started it though.

That was the one good thing about Pittsburgh, you could always find good food. Yet Fast Food is taking over.

I started it, back in 1985 i was putting my french fries on my burgers from mcdonalds religiously. as i grew older and graduated to the quarter pounder and eventually double quarter pounder the tradition continued.

sweet potato fries are truly awesome... but you dont put sour cream on a sweet potato in any form dammit! cook up the fries, and instead of salt, give a sprinkling of a sugar/cinnamon mixture.

Wiki to the rescue! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_butty)Not entirely the same thing, though. Ours are actual sandwiches with the fries on them...it comes with coleslaw on it, too, but I always got it without. According to the little pamphlet on every table at the restaurant, the sandwiches were developed when the miners or steel-workers had only so much time for their lunch, so it was all packed together to make a fuller meal.

No, silly. French fries. I could be wrong about coleslaw...I remember there was something they put on it that I didn't want. If I could remember the name of the restaurant, I could look it up.

Well, whatever it is I've never et one, so I couldn't vote fer none of the other options, now could I?

*edit* Okay, I followed your link. I've seen those at the Mennonite bakery, but I think they called them something else; maybe just 'dumplings'.

Ingredients:
Pierogi are semi-circular dumplings of unleavened dough, stuffed with cheese, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, cabbage, onion, meat, mushrooms, hard-boiled eggs, dry cottage cheese (the last two are rather Mennonite-specific), or any combination thereof, or with a fruit filling like blueberry. Mashed potatoes are the most common filling.

If I had to choose one food item proffered by the Poles, it'd be kielbasa. Sorry pierogies. The grocery store kielbasa is tasty, but I'm talking REAL kielbasa. If you live near a real polish butcher, you owe it to yourself. Nice giant, spicy-smoked sausage- mmmm, all you need to eat with it is some good mustard, though serving it over some pierogies wouldn't be a bad idea.

I live in a Polish town, and have had real kielbasa. It is very tasty (much moreso than "hillshire farms" or whomever puts out the mass produced stuff). But I can't eat much of it before it makes me sick. Therefore, I vote pierogies.
