we usually stay at the cemetery the whole day until midnight and have fun with all the relatives and bring lots of food and drinks. go to mass. light a candle over the graves of our departed relatives. good times! :)
the negative side is the traffic and the no parking spaces. everyone is going to be there so the place is congested. :man:
I live in an apartment downtown, safe from the visits of pesky trick-or-treaters. I may throw candy out the window at the drunks stumbling about below.

Actually, I might try to kickstart the whole 'Brits into Halloween' thing by taking a bite out of a live dog and then disebowelling myself behind the studio window for 'This Morning'.
One thing I don't get about the US celebration is how it's now literally just a huge fancy dress party. I thought the point was to be creepy, kooky, mysterious and drunk.

From the history channel:
Modern Traditions
The American tradition of "trick-or-treating" probably dates back to the early All Souls' Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called "soul cakes" in return for their promise to pray for the family's dead relatives.
The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice, which was referred to as "going a-souling" was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money.
The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

Doesn't explain how suddenly dressing as an egg or Robin Hood is relevant. Unless the ghost of Robin Hood happens by of an evening (unlikely for a variety of reasons).
One thing I don't get about the US celebration is how it's now literally just a huge fancy dress party. I thought the point was to be creepy, kooky, mysterious and drunk.

and parts is parts.
Oddly enough, these were the exact words from the man who is credited for creating chicken nuggets...
theflash
10-04-2007, 11:44 PM
they were also the words used quite widely by Burger King to bash the original chicken nugget when they first debuted their chicken tenders. and yes i'm old enough to remember when that happened.
Doesn't explain how suddenly dressing as an egg or Robin Hood is relevant. That's because it didn't happen suddenly. Halloween gradually lost its creepiness and turned into a general costume party as it became more focused on kids and candy. When you ask an 8-year-old girl what she wants to dress up as, the answer is more likely to be "a princess" than "a zombie".
The irony is that Halloween isn't so much for kids anymore: schools are dropping Halloween activities (out of fear of complaints from fundie christians), parents are sending their kids to organized activities at the mall instead of letting them roam the streets of their neighborhood (out of fear of sexual predators and terrorists), and adults are having more costume parties for themselves (out of fear that they're growing up). So in a sense, Halloween is still all about being scared.
