View Full Version : Having Trouble Choosing an Artist

About a month ago I posted a message in the Help Wanted forum looking for an artist for a proposal packet I'm putting together (http://www.digitalwebbing.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1256773#post1256773). Since then I've received somewhere around 40 submissions from artists, most of which left a lot to be desired but quite a few that greatly impressed me. Right now I've got it down to about four or five finalists, but the problem is I haven't been able to make a final selection!
Any tips?

write down the name of each finalist, place them on a wall, close your eyes and throw a dart. which ever name it hits or comes closest to is the winner.
Note: this method is more fun when drunk and several people are standing in close proximity to the target area of the dart waiting to see who gets chosen

pick the hotter one.

pick the cheapest..
1. If they didn't send you sequential art, throw them away.
2. If they didn't send pencils only (assuming you're using a separate inker) throw them away.
3. If they asked how much it pays in the first letter, throw them away.
4. If they failed to write at least a short letter of introduction, throw them away.
At this point you should be down to four or less...now it's just a matter of preference. Good luck.

Pistols at 10 paces!
Have you thought about contacting each of your finalists to get an idea of how interested in the project each one is?
If you had the applicants include references or you know who has hired them previously, you might try contacting those people to find out if each artist is reliable and easy to work with.
If one of the finalists lives close enough to you that you can meet in person, that might be a bonus as well.
I've never been in your position, but I just thought I'd throw out some suggestions.

I would definitely look at past work and get references. JUST because they're a good artist, doesn't mean they can meet deadlines. You need someone with talent AND maturity

Ding ding ding!
When I can't make up my mind in a situation like this with more than one good option to choose from and I can't decide, I create a chart listing the factors to consider. I give each factor a certain numerical weight, and then I start scoring the various options for how well they meet each factor. Of course it's impossible to do this entirely objectively, and as soon as I notice myself nudging the scores one way or another, I know that's one I intuitively want.

Since jonDahl disagreed with me, is he the douchebag or am I? I don't think we can BOTH be 'it' since we have opposite opinions on the matter.

In which case I would have greatly appreciated a non-douchebagy notification of said error. Of course, it's my bad for not have instaled DOUCHEBAG BLOCKER before posting here in the first place.

A douchebag blocker in chit chat would block everyone.
Sure, that's something to consider. If you're a NERD!The point of this exercise isn't to calculate the "best" option, but to trick your brain into revealing your intuitive preference. It's about being anti-nerd.
