Sept. 21, 2007 — Plants and animals may occupy distinct branches on the tree of life, but they could be more alike than we think.

In fact, green plants and animals enjoy a relatively close evolutionary relationship that has been obscured by a narrow focus on DNA sequences to find relatedness, says biologist John Stiller of East Carolina University.

Plants, fungi and animals are all in a group called the eukaryotes — distinguished by their advanced cellular machinery. But some eukaryotes, most notably the fungi, have long been considered more closely related to animals than plants are.

Interesting, but I think the traditional animal-fungi relationship is still better supported. So don't worry, Bio, we're not going to dump you in favor of some leafy old plants just yet.

You know, I honestly didn't recognize the connection (funghi, biofungus) when I first read that article. I just wanted to call "shenanigans" on vegetarians :p

"So you don't believe men should be killed and eaten with guacamole?"

"No, of course not! We believe men should be killed and eaten with a nice clam sauce!"

I'm still befuddled that mushrooms have no nutritional value. They have to have something. they're basically hunger styrofoam; it's just there for padding. Think of the dietary windfall that would come from bacon flavored mushrooms or raspberry chocolate flavored mushrooms. NO calories or nutrition; eat all you want!

If you get some that are well-infested with fungus gnats, then you'll get a little protein kick. :w00t:

Fungal cell walls are made of chitin, and chitin is indigestible to humans.

isn't that the crap bugs exoskeletons are made of? Frickin' chitin

MattWaterman

Soul food is largely identical with southern food. Southerners of all races enjoy chitterlings, whether fried or boiled. Damn things sure do stink, though.

The systematics of cuisine is a little behind the times. I don't believe even Linnaean concepts have been applied there.

Newt why don't you start?!!?

:w00t:

You could give science-style names to all the foods out there---you'd be a pioneer!!!

Griddleus Panneus Oxityal Pablanos in oil
Graveus Stewus Acanthocepalus Bryozoaid in oil
Butterus Maximus Lychoid Batterus in oil

Think of the possibilities!!!!

MattWaterman

Are you going to get on with it or continue to rage like a rat in your guilded cage???!?

Newt
01-29-2008, 04:25 PM
Fine, fine, I'll get right on it.

The higher classifications must come first- I must divide food into appropriate categories. But what character shall I use as the primary determinant- primary ingredient, manner of preparation, flavor, national origin, manner of consumption? Is mofongo more closely related to a banana split, mashed potatoes, matza balls, or hominy grits? Is chicken pot pie a pie or a stew? What about shepherd's pie? It's practically a casserole! Oh, the problems!

You can always start off easy:

Branch 2: Makius Assius Fattius - Everything else
