The cover price for comics in America is $2.99 and $3.75 in Canada. Now the Canadian dollar is officially equal to the US dollar why are Canadains paying an extra 76 cents? Especially when the comics are printed in Canada.

Why am I asked to stump up £6.00 for a Spider-man 16 pager which is mostly advertisements from Borders when in the States it costs $1.75?

Where in the United States do they have 16-page Spider-Man comics for $1.75?

Equal is a funny word. You forget import taxes and all that other nonsense you have to deal with when it comes to international commerce.

It's not like I count the pages but they're very thin and no way are worth six quid.

The comics are printed in Canada and shipped to the United States. Why would Canadians have to pay an import tax?

I don't go looking for Spider-Man comics, but I've never seen a 16-page one, or one for $1.75.

The first reason in that the books were printed when $2.99 American was nearly equal to $3.75 Canadian. Now that the dollar has fallen to even with the Canadian dollar, the books being printed now should have a lower Canadian price. That assumes the publisher doesn't charge more just becuase he can.

The second reason is that your Canadian coins don't work in our American vending machines and we are kinda pissed off about it.

Not all comics are printed in Canada. But even those that are must be shipped to one of three Diamond distribution centers before being sent back to comic stores.

That seems inefficient.

Doesn't matter where something is produced tax laws are what they are. Do you think a computer made in Korea or China costs the same or less if it was sold in those countries? Not bloody likely unless the market was larger than the primary US market. It's like this Canada doesn't have as many people buying comics as the US so shipping there is not really a priority. If the Market was proven to be larger then you could lower the price despite the taxes because you could make it back on volume. If the Market in China was proven to be large enough comics sold there could be priced cheaper. Ever wonder why car dealerships can maintain prices for Mercedes and BMW's while right across the street from a Hyundai dealership. Sustainabilty based on the market. If there wasn't a market that could sustain the Mercedes and Bimmer dealerships they'd vamoose. Main reason why poor neighborhoods look like poor neighborhoods. So Canada isn't a profitable area so the price is high and add on tariffs and taxes. there you go.

The printers are, well, printers, not distributors.

That would make sense, except that means it should've been higher than $3.75 in the first place. Now they are in a position where they should lower the price because taxes aren't high enough to where it should cost 76 cents per issue more. IMHO it's probably in part because they can, and unless the market stabilizes where it's at, or starts to go a lot higher, then they aren't gonna change the price only to have it drop and have to change the price back.

Well if the US dollar goes down against the Euro and Canadian dollar then guess what happens here? Inflation. Reason the Dollar is low has nothing to do with Bush, it's the Idiots out there taking advantage of the system and stupid law makers allowing them to. In fact now the Lawmakers are about to bail out the idiot ARM financiers and their duped customers who ran out and bought homes they couldn't afford. Now like in the 80's S&L crisis, we the taxpayers have to foot the bill. Which will cause more inflation and the fed will print more money and the dollar will drop a little more. The stock market will take advantage and rise.... it's a weird cycle.
So no the devaluing of the dollar will actually make prices go up.

Well Canada could offset the costs by having a separate distributor that is Canadian based. I suppose. I also believe the delivery routes and services in other countries aren't as abundant as here, so delivery costs would still be high even if you went through a reseller either online or eBay.
