Did these a little over 2 years ago so I'd have a reason to go to WW Philly. Marvel was the only booth reviewing portfolios, so I showed them. Forget the editors name, but he was some pointy lookin' dude with a ponytail... I wanna say Cory, but can't be sure. He definitely wasn't diggin' the style, but he seemed to like the pages overall and did spend about an hour with me talking about things, so I give him props for an in depth crit.

Anyway, he mentioned their Marvel Age editor would probably be into the pages, but he wasn't there, so no go on that. Not sure if that was a blow off or not. No doubt if he was really impressed he would've asked for my contact info. These also aren't superhero pages obviously, so I'm sure that aspect wasn't of much appeal either.

Showed DC... they were like "cool..." and that's about it.

A little bit later I showed another Marvel editor named Nick (forget the last name). He gave me his e-mail address, but I never pursued it.

Anyway... that was my one and only portfolio review/convention experience. I've never posted these pages for crits or anything, so I figured I'd scan them in and see what people think. Feel free to tear it to shreds if you'd like. And yeah, I didn't even bother to finish page 3.

Well, I love the style. If I had money I would hire you in a second. But since I don't I will just keep dreaming. Great stuff though, I like the detail and the little things like the US Army on the back of the one soldier.

cool looking stuff, I notice a few J. Scott Campbell influences here and there. I really hate to critiques pencil works because they feels very naked and incomplete somehow. Anyway, I hope you haven't given up hope of getting into the business. Got anything new or recent?

tlbowen... we're gonna have to find a way to make you some serious cash. Thanks man :)

midknight... thank you!

hlb... Thanks. Yes, I used to have a sick infatuation with Campbell's work. I got into comics at a late age and his work was some of the first I was exposed to... Just fell in love with the animated feel and clean, bouncy lines. While I think I've moved on to a richer set of influences, there's always gonna be a little spot for Campbell.

It's funny that you think pencils look naked. I love inked work, but I usually enjoy looking at pencils more.

I haven't given up hope. I'm still IN the business, just not working for Marvel or DC. I don't really have huge aspirations to work for them either, but I wouldn't turn down a good offer. ;)

I've got some recent stuff... working on my own book these days (which is relative to these pages). I'll post some of that eventually.

Hmm... maybe I should just trace over a 3d Poser model next time.

Or maybe you should just build your page in legos instead.

It'd be better than your Duplo pages!

Ah... TAKE THAT... Yeah, I said Duplo!

You've got Duplos up your butt if you think anyone cares about your two year old drawings of giant toddler heads.

That's actually your dad dressed as my sister. Why's he dressed like that? Because he's a whore for my  And I made him do it.

Slightly creepy apparently good natured slam-fest aside :D.....

I REALLY like the pages for the most part. Only see a few little things...proportions getting a touch wiggly here an there...but I'd buy it. :) AND they're two years old so I guess I'll go looking for more recent stuff!

BobRivard
08-31-2007, 07:51 PM
Thanks Kel!

Yeah, there's definitely some wonky anatomy issues here and there (among other things). I'd like to think I have improved since, but no doubt there are new problems now.

Anyway, I'm glad you like them!

whats up man...i remember seeing these in person..you decided that you want to be a comic book artist yet? If you have some new sequentials I can pass your work along to people...up to you.

One of my favorites on this site. I felt your style may have been "influenced" by Campbell but stands out enough to be your own. If the only complaint you get is you look too much like another artist, then you have nothing to worry about. What artist hasn't been influenced by someone else? Look at all the Jim Lee "wannabes" out there. I saved your site in my faves.

Haha... That's still up in the air. Actually man, I really appreciate it. I'm working on a few things right now, maybe I'll send something over.

Chowmeingott... hey, you need not re-introduce yourself. I remember hanging out in Chicago a few years ago. Anyway, thanks man. The kids head is HUGE... the marvel editor caught that one as well. Maybe I should put some dialogue in there "Holy shit, I just found a kid with a mutant head!"

Jason... Thank you man, pretty flattering words. No doubt the Campbell influence is there a bit, these are a couple years old though and "I think" I've managed to wipe myself clean of that now. :) The editor said he saw some Wieringo in there too.

Great stuff, man! I like how you're constantly changing visual angles from panel to panel.

How come you never got back with the editor that gave you his email?

you guys are fucking hilarious, keep'm coming

Love to see you 2 in a bar smashed and see the incessant string of insults that would erupt... but I dont go to many gay bars, so never happen (couldnt resist sorry hehe)

ANYWAYS... those pages are brilliant, not in acrit mood so Ill just go with "HOLY MUTANT HEAD KID" and leave it at that...

Damn, this is good stuff. I love your anatomy work. Just cartoony enough to make the expressions/gestures really stand out.

BobRivard

Thanks for the responses!

Chris M... Thanks man... gotta keep the pages interesting.

About the editor: I guess I just wasn't all that excited about being a bottom rung guy at Marvel. I know you have to start somehwere, but I really don't even like superhero stuff. I never collected comics as a kid, which might have something to do with that, I don't know. Where I'd really like to be is somewhere like Mignola's shoes... doing my own thing full time and making a decent living doing it. Then get a movie deal and do coke offhot asian chicks asses... if my wife doesn't mind. Which she won't because we're swingers.... Or we will be when I'm famous.

Meathawg... You're trying to tell me, that with a name like that, you're not hitting all the lovely gay-friendly establishments Asheville has to offer? I'll bet you could take that "tough as a sailor" swagger of yours and head down to Scandal's on Patton Ave. and pick up some dark skinned poof for a night of sweet, sweet, interracial cornhole lovin'... Southern Style!

Wake up the next morning and think about what you just did while you down a cup of coffee and a double order of hash browns, smothered and covered of course. :carrot:

Adam... Sorry you had to read that. Thanks for the kind words, man. However, I wish my anatomy was a little more on par in these pages.
