View Full Version : BLITZ! Draw-Off 007

I had trouble coming up with this one (and I accidentally deleted a good PM I had with a bunch of suggestions), but I have a bit of an idea (even this particular draw off may seem a little odd/out of place):
FRANKENSTEIN's MONSTER!
Yes, draw Frankenstein's monster. You can include the good Doc Frankenstein himself too, if you wish, but it's not necessary.
And here's the catch: Hold onto your piece! It's going to come in handy at a later time ;)
Due: July 26th, 11:59pm est.
Have fun, folks!

No, what I'm saying is, the monster you create in this draw off, will be incorporated into another draw off down the road, so don't lose your reference :)

This is an homage to Charles Burns. Thats why he has the Elvis sideburns and hair.
I was looking at photos from the 1931 movie with Boris Karloff and I saw this scene. With it I wanted to show the softer side of Frankenstein. :)
I forgot to mention that those are Dr. Martin boots!

I kinda screwed up the cloth, obviously i have no idea how to draw fabric properly. As for the illustration, i did use the pose in the book as a model for it and still didn't manage to get the foreshortening right. I didn't know what pose to put frankenstein in, so i figured i'd try the jumping one.

I knew xaltair's looked tragically familiar. Could spell trouble. Anywho.....Xaltair, while Burne's stuf really is "dynamic", his anatomy is sometimes deceiving and even flat out wrong in some cases. I have many of those books and really the best of the series is "Dynamic Light and Shade". For anatomy, look elsewhere.
As for your Frankenstien....consider a second attempt. I won't give you any more grief, but I think Bio formally called you on it.

Burne Hogarth is terrible at anatomy, although i'd recommend at least one book of his in your library for breaking down of specific body parts. If I need to know how to draw a kneecap, I know just where to look.
Xaltair that's also a good version of Richard Corben's Den :)

Hi guys..sorry I haven't been around for the blitzes lately..This is a great subject (being a huge vintage monster fan)...sadly though I don't have time to create a new one.
I'm just gonna throw something I did a couple of years ago...Don't count it in the voting. Just for the hell of it.
Enjoy.

I actually haven't even looked at the books in years, i bought them long time ago and they've been sitting on the shelf for a while. I wanted him to be more or less naked and bald, so i figured i'd find a good pose for reference in there. I don't have any pics of people in those poses, i suppose i could've looked for wrestlers or something but didn't feel like it.
Anyways, it didn't come out as i wanted it anyways since i'm not a full time artist like most of you here. Besides, i didn't think using an art book's pose for reference (since i clearly drew the piece, not traced it) was going to be a big deal. I'm sure other have used it in the past and probably no one ever knew what their reference was, the pose i chose just happened to be on the cover of the book and i didn't even notice. :p

I would have to say that i disagree with you...Burne hogarth has been studied and praised by some of the top illustrators and comic book artists in the world and was highly reckognized world wide FOR his unsurpassed knowledge of the human anatomy!!!..that is a bold opinion indeed. You may notice small problems in his books but you may ask yourself..are they his mistakes or are they your mistakes about the way YOU understand anatomy?I am not slamming you or your opinion..I just am slow to judge anyone whom has had the lifetime of praise and reckognition that Hogarth has. :)

dude, i don't have any burne hogarth's books but i have to totally disagree with you. when i first started out, this book was highly recommended by a comic book agent who is handling lots of very good artists now doing great works for the big companies. it was a bit pricy in one of the bookstores so i could not get my hands on it. but now if i ever come across one, i'd buy it without question.
Gabriel Solis
07-26-2007, 02:57 PM
Jake before you buy it without question, take a look inside, if you haven't already. I was recommended his books by lots of artists as well, and I ordered 2 without a preview. George Bridgeman has better books on anatomy, although some of them are very sketchy and more advanced. As for Burne Hogarth, what I meant by "terrible," --his inability to keep consistent proportions (i'm looking at a picture now, her femur is more than twice as long as her shin), the awkwardness of many of his poses (twisted knees and elbows), and as a personal preference, I like anatomy books that show a little more foreshortening. His breakdowns of muscle masses are incredible, and his wrinkles and drapery book is worth every penny. But for overall anatomy, George Bridgeman's books were always at the top of the recommended list.
Well P.I., i'm just a humble noob, but I think they are his mistakes. I'm judging him on my opinion, not his many accolades.

I'll look for this George Bridgeman guy's books, never heard of him before. And i'm working on a new piece for the draw-off right now, since the other one created such a controversy.

Not really, since i'm doing the drawing now, i'm not driving now to go buy his books. Besides i used the book for reference, it's an art book for god's sakes. I'm not advanced enough to know how all the muscles and limbs look like in various poses so i have to look at art books or pics.

Sure bud. Much of his stuff looks like this.

His book on hands is also very overrated. He draws awesome clothing and drapery. Here is bridgeman's, he studies the hand from different angles, different situations. For your money, go with him
