Best concieved practical elegant or just great to look at.
Post a picture and give your reasons why you think it's the best.
I begin with
Superman Batman and Wonder Woman.
All 3 are iconic and have changed little over the 60 yr span since they were introduced, I've seen many redesigns but they never stick, DC got it so right from the very first time these characters appeared.

Also Spider-Man
Just a beautiful costume that has stood the test of time, I have a feeling my great grand-kids will have the same costumed Spider-man that we have today.

Great idea for a thread. I want to play.
Nice choices above, but I figured I'd go a bit outside the box with mine. I have tons of favorites, obviously, but these 6 are great designs.

I think Daredevil has as iconic a look as Batman. There aren't a ton of DD scans on the web though, so this'll have to do. However, I like his yellow costume almost as much.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/mikeexner3/Deathstroke.jpg
Deathstroke the Terminator has always been one of my favorite villains, and one of the primary reasons was his look. The same can be said for quite a few of the villains I enjoy.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/mikeexner3/Invincible.jpg
A more recent addition to the list would be Invincible. I think Kirkman and Walker's decision to use the Image "I" as a template for the uniform was a stroke of genius. Definitely iconic.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/mikeexner3/Raven.jpg
Just to make sure I don't go all with one gender here, who can argue that Raven doesn't have one of the best looks in comics? Both sexy and mysterious at once, Raven is the best of both worlds.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y180/mikeexner3/Sunfire.jpg
Much like Yellow DD, the original Sunfire duds are a guilty pleasure. This guy should have been like, a big-name Avenger or something a loooooong time ago just based on his costume alone.

Vision is awesome. 'Nuff said.

When it comes to Sunfire, and cool costumes in general, I have to point to the AoA/current incarnation.
http://ultimatecomics.free.fr/xmen/images/aoa/AoA_Sunfire.jpg
Shame on you guys for not immediately thinking of Spider-Man, either the original or the black costume, they're both fantastic, and the Ben Reilly variation is cool too.
The Punisher, especially the more MAX Ennis books style of the Punisher... utilitarian, badass, iconic.
Xtreme X-Men era Gambit... all of the cool parts of his original costume, and minus the hot pink and neon blue.
Nightcrawler, especially his classic costume and his costume with the armored shoulder pads that he wore during his "priesthood".
In general, I eschew the really colorful costumes in exchange for more cool, utilitarian costumes. Bold and unique to the character, but not flashy. I generally like a lot of the Xtreme X-men and AoA costumes for the X-characters.

The first post DID mention Spider-Man, and that's the only reason I didn't include him in my list. Spidey has had some great ones from symbiote to the Amazing Bag-Man and beyond...
And shame on YOU for including that AoA Sunfire. That would be my addition to the worst costumes thread. Blech, blech... double blech! :p

AoA Sunfire is just badass in my book.
Sorry I missed the Spider-man bit, the image that's posted with it is a red X for me, when I was scrolling I skipped straight from DC pictures onto the next post.
As for Utilitarian-ness, the Punisher is always more focused on practicality, I just prefer the stripped down version than the 'classic' white gloves and boots. Then the Xtreme X-men, for the most part they skip the flashy colors and capes and whatnot (Storm has a cape still), and focus on more simple, bold designs with less frills. They're filled with belts and pouches, but in a balanced manner, no Liefield crap.

Who do you have illustrating the book? Looks like whoever it is understands fully the brilliance of Professor Fisher. ;)

Oh, and to settle the utilitarian bit, in case any of you are seriously thinking of utilitarianism.
Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Utilitarian (adj)
3 a : of, relating to, or aiming at utility
Utility (noun)
1 : fitness for some purpose or worth to some end
2 : something useful or designed for use

The current variation she's got in The Loners is equally cool. It's simple, and it properly accentuates what you really ought to be aware of on her, I think.

I love threads like this! :) I'm totally going to show my geeky-ness too!
Okay first off is Huntress. The Batman Universe is full of fantastic female heroines, but by far she's one of my favourites. I always loved this costume of hers from the HUSH series:
http://heartofglitter.dragoncity.net/comics/huntress.jpg
It really shows her dark side, her vigilante-esque nature, and it's sharp and sexy.
Next is Hawkgirl. I have always loved this character, and I loved watching the Justice League animated series for her. I always feel sad seeing comics of her, because usually she's portrayed as a chubby, ugly woman with that huge bird helmet on her head. I have no problems with her usual costume if it's drawn right... But for me, this is the best I have ever seen her:
http://heartofglitter.dragoncity.net/comics/hawkgirl.jpg
http://heartofglitter.dragoncity.net/comics/hawkgirl2.jpg
It's such a sexy jumpsuit, and suits her so well. It goes to show that under that huge helmet is a beautiful, soft face, and stunning eyes.
And last but not least, the Green Arrow from Smallville. I've never really been a GA fan, mainly because he's a player, and I hate guys like that. I've always felt that his old-school style beard, and get-up was un-attractive. But the costume design for the young, sexy Green Arrow from Smallville is gorgeous:

I love this costume. It's sleek, it's modern, it's sexy. It's everything that Smallville is going for with the series.
Not to mention Smallville Green Arrow is total eye-candy~ *drool*
