Is the genre dying? I mean, 360 has DOA and PS3 has Tekken. They both have Virtua Fighter 5.... but that's really it. And I know, I know, "What else do you need?"

So is it just gonna' die off and leave the whole fighting game genre in the hands of just those 3?

You forgot the Def Jam series.
There are still plenty of 2D fighting games out there. You should try your hands on Guilty Gear, King of Fighters and the like. True that there's still no word on next-gen 2D fighters, but fighting games are meant for the arcades after all.

um... under a bridge much? The Street Fighter EX series and any Mortal Kombat after Ultimate 3 is 3-D.

Its not really dead. Not with everything that seems to trickle out. Remember there is the new KOF's, Guilty Gear, SoulCalibur, not to mention Street Fightrer HD(a complete remake fo the original Street Fighter 2, with UDON graphics, for PSTriple and Xbox360).

Plus, if you feel like being illegal, you can find Street Fighter 3 Thrid Strike for mame now, and kick ass kaillera style.

In addition, Japan has some really sweet fighters out. Two of the recent ones I've been playing are Melty Blood ReAct and Big Gang Beat. You can find them in import shops or torrent them.

And Every year there's a big tourny called Evolution. It brings the best players from around the world to play some really awesome matches. In example Diago vs. Justin: 54 Seconds (http://youtube.com/watch?v=XeM0rH_4ung) .

If you really want to be up on the latest fighting news, go over to Shoryuken.com. They have everything.

I don't think that SF dropped for Xbox, I should indeed check out MK though.

The big trend in fighting games are anime based games. One Piece, Dragonball Z, Naruto, etc.

I loved Marvel vs Capcom 2 and SF3 Third Strike is one of my favs of all time, But the 360 could make great use of simple graphics to improve on gameplay and gaming modes.

How cool woud it be to have a character customization mode for SF Third Strike or Mavel vs Capcom? Or even a leveling/ranking system like in Virtua Fighter 4 Evo. It would lend itself well to online play. My favorite part of all the fighting games I have are creating my own characters and modifying the exsisting ones.

There are plenty of good fighting games coming out all the time. Guilty Gear Accent Core was just released. You also have Melty Blood and Big Bang Beat.

IMO it got redundant 7 years ago. I can still pick up any fighting game and have the moves mastered in 5 minutes and go through anyone (3 d fighters anyway).

Haha, red points for saying you live under a bridge. It's not my fault you haven't looked at the internet or game store in the past 5 years, is it? Thats what under the bridge means. You've been there, instead of seeing all those new high technical horseless carriages they have now. And if you didn't give me the points, whoever else did should stand up, and stop being such a silent douche.

A new Mortal Kombat game will most likely show up on the next gen with a rebooted franchise. A Soul Calibur action game is in the works by NAMCO and will be called Soul Calibur Legends.

SCL is an action adventure game. Soul Cal 4 is the new fighting game.

I recently bought Dragonball Z Budeki 2 on the Ps2 and love it. The only prob with games like it is you have to be a fan of the show to have fun with it.
Dbz Budeki Tenchi 3 is coming out soon though. I haven't tried the Tenchi series yet.
My fav has always been Soul Calibur series then DOA. Maybe in a couple years we will see a Soul Calibur 4 on all systems. The only gripe I have about games like those is that with DOA and Tekken all they do is add 2 new chars and everything else is basically the same. You just get lastest graphics etc.

Soul Caliber 2 came out on all three systems (at the time). AFAIK, it's not an exclusive title.

I like button mashers with smooth animation, who cares about gameplay when it feels like you're playing a cartoon.
I'm still waiting on a decent Marvel fighting game, I'm tempted to pick up UA but really have no interest in turn based action RPGs if thats what it is.

Ultimate Alliance is more Gaunlet/Dynasty Warriors. Its not a turn based rpg. Its basically a Hack n' Slash with rpg elements (exp, hp, items and such.)

Tekken or Mortal Kombat are the only 2 franchises that I still find entertaining.

SCL is an action adventure game.

Yeah that's what I was saying.

I loved the gameplay of Tekken 5 but the recently announced new characters in Tekken 6 don't interest me one bit. One look like a Jacky/Lion/Rock Howard clone and the other look like another Christie. Mortal Kombat just doesn't interest me anymore since UMK3 on the 16-Bit consoles, though Deadly Alliance is kinda bearable.

I thought so, too, but Namco usually does a good job with their Tekken cast, so I'm pretty hopeful they will all turn out cool. The matador looks interesting, and the girl fights like a spider.

Capcom Launches Teaser Website for New 2D Fighter

July 02, 2007

by: Daniel Matos

Super Street Fighter III Alpha Turbo 10th Strike announcement imminent.
Capcom has launched a fairly barebones teaser site for a previously unannounced new 2D fighting game, the "first original Capcom fighting game in 3 years" according to the site.

Whether "original" means an entirely new property or simply not a port of a previous game to a new platform isn't exactly made clear, nor is precisely when we can expect the game to be unveiled. "Coming Soon" is all the website says.
