Can anyone tell me how many fonts win XP pro can handle without bogging down or crashing? I have read conflicting information, I have about 800-900 loaded (I think that's too many). I run type 2, open type, and truetype. Can you recommend a good font manager for windows, I have so many files of fonts that I forget what I have. It's been a long time since I had typography classes and lots of things have changed. Thanks.

the best font manager you can buy...

is a MAC.

But in all seriousness... 800+ fonts? Seriously? Why would you need even HALF that many? I'd recommend dumping all the fonts you don't use. Get it down to a reasonable number and you should be fine.

I use FontBook, but I think that's a Mac only prog.

I've used typograf for years, but it's less a management program than a viewer. I'm trying to get Linotype to work...I've heard great things about it...but it hates me...so not yet. Sigh.

What about a way to manage fonts just within Illustrator? I've gotten rid of a lot of fonts but still have several I don't want to get rid of but would rather not have to scroll through in my font list in Illus.

Seems there should be an easy way to do that....right?

When you find it, brother, you let me know! i'd LOVE that! Why Adobe hasn't built it in is beyond me!

Well, we have Adobe Type Manager on the computers at work and it allows you to turn off font sets and individual fonts for Adobe progs. Does that help?

Thanks for the help! I like the adobe font manager but it only works with the postscript fonts, unless they've updated and I haven't (I also have the lite version, came with my adobe software package). It would cost a lot to convert all my programs, and fonts, over to MAC, and ligatures is the only thing I've found that windows can't do that Mac can (but I get really pissed at the constant win upgrades and new op systems so I've actually considered). I was checking the typograf online and I'll look at Extensis suitcase.

I meant, are you one of the writers of the software? As you just registered to post the tip, I thought you might be.

Either way, I've downloaded it...and so far I do like it. I'll have more to opine later once I've ducg into it more. Nice work!

In Illustrator you can set up your fonts in the Character Style.

Set up the size & kerning to your heart's content.
