View Full Version : Miyamoto Criticizes Third Party Developers, Wants to Expand Miis

If there's only one piece of advice that I could give to the managers of third party companies, it would be that a lot of times it seems that when they're putting games out on Nintendo hardware, those games are being developed by their third-string team or their fourth-string team. Maybe that's because they see those products as being unique projects or somewhat smaller-scale projects. But when Nintendo puts out a title that is designed to really support and sell its hardware, that title is always developed by one of our number one teams. And so I think that when it comes to the question of trying to compete with our software, I would really like to see the parties try to do that with their number one teams rather than with the third- or fourth-string teams. [Laughs.]
With regard to the PlayStation Home, obviously we have seen a lot of people who have been interested in doing that type of thing for a long time, from Little Computer People to what we have done with the Miis to the Sims, so a lot of people have looked at different ways to take that and do something with it. I wouldn't be surprised if we also did something along those lines further in the future.

That's different for Miyamoto. He doesn't usually criticize like that.
Honestly, though, I don't have much interest in Miis. But I'm not an online gamer and Sims gets boring after a while.

He should have just called out Ubisoft.

Well, right now I still look at the Wii's sensor bar and the "pointing" technology we've developed as something that I think is going to end up being very effective for the types of games that the hardcore gamers like to play. There are also other enhancements to the Wii interface and developments being planned that are going to really make games for hardcore players a lot more fun and interesting.
One other thing that I think is going to be the next big challenge for Nintendo is related to the idea of network entertainment. A lot of people have the misunderstanding that Nintendo is not interested in network gaming. What we are interested in isn't so much the idea of creating a game that is online and networked in a way that we have seen online up until now. We are really more interested in this idea of having the household television connected to the Internet constantly via the Wii. I think you are going to see a lot of new possibilities for new types of entertainment, such as new channels for the Wii in that type of network environment.

Does anyone really care about the channels? Do you turn on your Wii to get the weather?

I do, I use the Wii for just about everything. I have a 52inch tv, so, needless to say, If my wife isn't watching NCIS, I'm fucking with my Wii. I check some gaming blogs, check the weather to see if I feel like cutting the grass, I play games, and even read some of the news now and then. The only channel I don't use is the Photo Channel, because I don't believe in pictures.

He's preaching the word, though. Shit is true, and so is Marvin in regards to his comment about Ubisoft. Fuckers.

Ubisoft has been flooding the Wii with shit games since Nov. 19th, man. There's like an arse load of 'em out there already.

I'm addicted to the mii's, nothing like seeing who's better in a game of tennis with abe lincoln and hitler. As for the the games I think he called it perfectly on the third party titles.

Most developers put their A-list developers on the projects that take advantage of the powerful processors. Nintendo is still seen as a great system for mini-games and I don't think anyone wants their lead programmers to be designing mini-games. I don't think criticizing the third party developers is going to help any.

Are you serious? Everybody and their momma has already rocked that game's nads off. I guess I feel especially "blah" about it 'cause I played it 'till my eyes bled on the GC. No more! We don't need it!

Most of the 3rd party games are "remakes" of other games (Re4, Prince of Persia) Ports from DS (Cooking Mama, Trauma Center)
Cooking Mama is terrible on the Wii, they had major problems getting the remote to sync.

I feel Miyamoto's angst regarding this problem. Hell, they've been dealing with this since the GC. Apart from Capcom and EA, third party companies have been treating Nintendo like a red-headed stepchild. The blame could go both ways I suppose - companies using inferior development teams for the "inferior console", and Nintendo's affinity for pushing first party games.
RE4 should, ideally, be more fun with the Wiimote. I played that thing to death on my GC, and loved every minute of it.

Me too. The only thing that could bring me back to the game, though, is online mercenaries!!! (Which ain't gonna happen.)
