What the title says. What are your favorite underrated movies?
My list:
The Tao of Steve
Eight Days A Week
Now You Know
Mallrats (at the time. It got big later because of Smith's other works)
Kissing a Fool (I've never heard any critic, actor, or person in general talk about this movie)
The Man Who Knew Too Little (my mom loved this and made me watch it. IMO, this is one of Bill Murray's best comedic performances)
The-Spirit

Frailty
True Romance
The count of Monte cristo
Restoration
The Butterfly effect
The Iron Giant

A Bronx Tale
Goodfellas

Identity...very hitchcock/twilight zone. Yet not many saw it in theaters...damn shame.
Joe Vs. The Volcano - you know...I love this movie...I think it's funny and a good quirky film.
One Crazy Summer - Come on man...Bobcat at his most screachable. Ha!
Metropolis - The anime movie...not the silent film. Although it's loosely based on the same thing...interesting and visually stunning.
Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - Steve Martin during his peak of comic genius....after All of Me....just kinda slid down hill from there. But this was a great movie. Carl Reiner directed flawless comedy here.

The best thing about the TV & Movies forum is that virtually every thread turns into a battle of "I liked this..." vs. "Well, you're wrong for having that opinion!" without any real criticism or discussion beyond that. It's all yuh huh vs nuh uh.
That said,
April Fool's Day is my pick. And Bucky, I second Dave. I've always liked that movie alot, though I can't figure out why. :)

Underrated is subjective, plus I don't believe they were at the box office, that to me is underrated.
Reasons for not going to major movie outlets include:
Not the market
Meant as direct to dvd
Didn't test well with audiences
The ones you listed were direct to dvd or limited markets. All of them had made a profit, BUT as said many times..just because something makes money doesn't mean it's good.

True Romance - Tarantino hates it and I like it ALOT!
Mad Max - The original is far better than the sequel (which everyone seems to like the most) because of the great build-up.
Terminator - without it no T2 and Arnie as a Bad guy.
True Lies - got rubbished when it came out for being to0 over the top,I didn't even like it at the time, now looks fairly tame and has some damn funny moments especially with Bill Paxton.
Toxic Avenger - all my friends hate this film because it's cheap and stupid, which is part of what's so great about it.
Rocky Horror Picture Show - you either love it or hate it. LOVE IT!
Street Fighter (with Sonny Chiba) - very entertaining and has an unorthodox main character, crazy scenes and many unexpected events.
Devils Rejects - as stated by a reviewer.. no redeeming features, which suits a story about people with no murals/conscience etc. A policeman who is just as fucked up as the apparent bad guys AND a brilliant fucking cover image.

From what I heard the ending was changed alot and he didn't agree with alot of the Directors decisions, plus at one stage he didn't even want himself credited in the film. But I may be wrong - but if so, wheres your proof?

Every tarantino interview. At first he wasn't sure about Tony Scott doing it but after he saw it he loved it. The only real thing that changed from the script was the timeline. It was linear instead of non linear. He did do the commentary.
I think your confusing it with Oliver Stone's Natural born killers. He hates stone and refuses to see the movie.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang certainly falls under this heading as well. It didn't do huge numbers, kind of breezed by the theater season and quickly found its home on DVD. I copped it based on what you guys mentioned a few months back on a similar thread, and I love that flick. Great underrated movie.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (Forest Whitaker)
I just bought this on DVD. One of my favorites. Glad he finally got recognized for the actor he is. Although after seeing him on The Shield last nite, I hope Mackie puts a bullet in'em.

OK.. I have another winner to go with Bound
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Agreed, that's a great Bond film. A shame Lazenby didn't make anymore (a fact he now regrests, as he was offered a multi-Bond contract after OHMSS).

No, actually it was a very popular dvd in the USA outselling the previous hit for the director, shaolin soccer. But since no one here can get their head wrapped around the concept of underrated Then I see no reason in why it cannot be listed here.
I'd like to add the original star wars trilogy and indiana Jones.

My favourite underrated movie would be Casshern. It's a Japanese production that not even the Japanese could get into. Based on a classic anime series, it strayed quite far from the original story and the ending was not a popular one (everybody died). I personally loved it because of its unique visual style and I actually understand the story. It was a flop in Japan, don't really know the reaction in the US though.

DAMN SKIPPY..that movie fucking ROCKED!!! Best blind ebay purchase I have ever made!! One of the more beautiful and visually stunning movies to watch. Real life shot in anime style..so cool.
Directed by Kazuaki Kiriya
I know Dreamworks bought it in 2005 with plans of releasing it here..but I don't know if they plan on following through on that.
Good pick!!!
Here is a trailer (http://www.apple.com/jp/quicktime/trailers/casshern_large.html)

They did release it. Very limited release. I remember planning to go see it (so far, despite living in NY, I have YET to get to see any of the limited releases I've wanted to. That's at least 3 in the past two years that I've missed).

Isn't that the 1968 movie?
It's a 2004 movie. Casshern the anime was not even created until 1973.
So it seems that it did better than I thought. But since it never made it to number one and even lost to Crayon Shinchan  I'd say the movie was still somewhat underrated.

I know, that pro thing is only useful if you're an agent or really, really nosey I guess. I was just pointing out that they're planning a sequel (actually, they were originally planning a remake, which is what I was looking for. Didn't know it had evolved into a sequel).
