Who the fuck is Emile Hirsch? and why would anyone make a film of Speed Racer - how the hell do you make a 90min or longer film from that cartoon?
kdmelrose

Hirsch was in The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Lords of Dogtown, The Mudge Boy, Alpha Dog and several other movies. He's a good actor.
And I think it would be pretty simple to come up with a plot for a Speed Racer movie. It's racing with a high-tech car, intrigue ... and a chimpanzee. There's a good 90 minutes, easily.

IMO if they do a movie like this they should make it just like the cartoon, otherwise why do it? Scooby Doo was like the cartoon in look but not tone and story and that's what ruined it for me, don't try to update it or put your own spin on it just make a true adaptation.

I kind of agree, but you can get out of the 60s-70s and update it a bit. I mean, making Scrappy the bad guy in SD ruined it for me, but I could live without the lame, cartoony cloths and acting. The tone should be the same but the "GAULLIE -WHILIKERS (SP?)" dialog is a bit corny. But then again, these are kid movies, why curse?

I don't mind them updating it a bit. I don't know why it couldn't be set in the 60's tho? The thing I don't like is adult themes and in jokes, I see no point in that, why do these movies say we're doing it for the kids and put in all these things that only adults will get. There are ways of doing it within the universe and still staying true to the concept. Bugs Bunny did all the time.

Well some things are inappropriate for children. I mean if you are targeting a younger audience then make the movie for them, not adults. That is the whole point in the rating system.
-Jason
'Just for kids' movies are a rarity these days; even the big Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks animated films have a lot of grown-up content. Besides, most current Speed Racer fans are the adults who were kids two or three decades ago, when the show was running on Saturday morning TV; do they even air the series anymore?

I can't agrue the first point cause I totally agree, but that is a shame. But can anyone here (at least adults) say, from what you have seen so far, that you are dieing to see this? I am a fan of the old series/cartoons myself but that was a different time, now it just looks silly.
-Jason
They target kids because kids drag their parents to see these movies, but the parents will only sit through it the second and third times the kids want to watch it if they got some enjoyment out of it themselves; it's a smart business move to split the target audience that way.

Actually, and I know morals are rare these days, but I would walk out and demand my money back if I took my kids to see a movie like this and they where cursing. I know it is hard to watch regular TV without cursing now-a-days but this is getting rediculous. I hate censorship in a lot of ways. I think as long as you are an adult you should be able to watch what you want (as long as it is legal) but it is a very different story when it comes to children.

There are ways to make it fun for adults without crossing the line. The Shrek movies are an example of crossing that line, I can't let my kids watch it.

As fun as this may seem, I have a feeling the plot is somewhat way too predictable. Speed wants to race, Pops disagree, Speed gain a rival, Speed run into some bad sponsors (probably some guy who wants to get a hold of his pops' Mach 5 design), Speed refuse his offer, Speed race for his life, Racer X saves his ass. True to the source material indeed.

Really, two plumbers go to another dimension to save a princess. One wears a green plumber suit, the other red. Sounds very much the same. Sure they took liberties but I am sure Speed Racer will too (we just have not seen them yet). The style is very much the same (cartoony). I don't recall Super Mario being 'cartoony', which was the point of my previous post. We are talking about the one with John Leguizamo as Luigi, right? It was a low budget Muppet show with dark and dingy surroundings set in underground caves. That's cartoony?
I really don't get how the bright colored Speed Racer remind you of that particular movie instead of The Flintstones or 300 or Hitman or Josie & The Pussycats or whatever, which is why I asked. Heck, 300 was a lot more cartoony than Super Mario.
