Hey guys, and this is not meant to be or sound like hate fest ((I loved Batman Begins and all the actors where great in it)), I was just wondering, why does Nolan seem to mainly cast foreign actors in Batman? I know there are a few (very few) exceptions but almost all the major roles are non-American actors (Bale, Caine ((which I understood of course)), Neeson, Oldman, Murphy, Wilkinson, Hauer, Wanatabe, Roache, Holden,) and in The Dark Knight he has Heath Ledger as the Joker. Don't get me wrong, they are all great actors but why do think he doesn't cast more Americans in American roles (an this isn't a thread for American bashing -- be serious)?

Name some American actors that could do a better job.

Should ask that of Singer with the X-flicks. 2 Brits, Aussies, Canadians, A Dane. That's the X-men. Good actors are good actors no matter the birthplace. And Oldman can do no wrong by me.

That's a broad implication. We all know that just because somebody is paid more, does not mean they're a better actor than someone paid less.
Bloat-actors make for strange industry standards.

No, I think he's just implying that foreign actors generally get paid less. Nothing about the quality of their acting.

I thought that's what I said, only more confusing and beating around the bush.

I don't know about a better job but you could find American actors equally as good for some of the roles. I mean that is like saying find better forgein actors for Burton's Batman.
I think money might be it though.

Let's not forget, that american actors on the whole are known for being more "prima donnas" (yes, I'm aware that it's a handful that spoil it for the whole bunch), and some directors just prefer to work with foreign actors who tend to be more "grounded".

I think it just comes down to talent and tone.
I think Nolan went with teh best actors for the job, and they happen to be non Americans. I honestly cant think of better actors for the roles...
Ameriocan actors have a definte qulaity to them, Im not syaing they are bad, but I think they can tend to be overly dramatic, and overstated.
Remember WB wanted Aston Kucher to be Bruce Wayne. I think we're all happy they didnt go in that direction.

Nolan picked what he thought were the best actors for their chosen roles. If you do that, where they come from should be immaterial.

Is Brad Pitt American? He would've made a good Joker(12 Monkeys).

Two black guys in a city of millions? Great parts but a small presence in the overall film(and I'm speaking from a realism standpoint). I mean we're discussing what actors are best for the part for the best realistic outcome. There were Asian and even an Indian character presence in the film. Oh well, what do I know, I'm just a fat, wannabe artist, white-guy. But Gotham seems like it would be a giant melting pot.

Okay then, name me a few Americans that could have done an equal job to the foreign actors in Batman.
(Brad Pitt is from Oklahoma).

Good actors are good actors. And yes, for the most part are usually paid less than their inflated American counterparts whose paycheck is based more on what their previous movies brought it rather than their talent alone. The American actors he hired for this movie are solid actors who can deliver on their craft. I'm with Justice on Oldman, too, he's the shit!
I too would have expected a little more of a blend in the Gotham populace, but it's not much of a concern. One has to understand that most if not all of these characters were written back in the '40s and '50s.

No offense, but the screenplay was written in the 21st century.
I'm not saying, make Robin black just to make him black, I'm just saying crowd scenes, Bruce's birthday party, even the underworld of Gotham. :)

Nolan has duel citizenship..he went to school in England...his father is english, mom american...so this is where he had his contacts/ thoughts/ideas...not America....these were choices for his personal confort..the movie is excellent!

the crowd scenes were extras....maybe no black extras showed up... bruce is a rich white guy... they dont have black friends... if there were black people in the underworld people will bitch that only roles a black guy can get is playing a poor street person...

That's right! We spawned one of the best American actors around! We also gave the world Chuck Norris, Ron and Clint Howard, James Garner, Gary Busey, Will Rogers, and Gene Autry. Take that North Dakota!

Yeah, but the fact that they didn't make one or two of those black guys thugs shows a little consideration against the stereotype.

LOTR was set in the lands of the Westernesse of Middle Earth, most likely meant to resemble the continent of Europe. It's understandable that all of them are white people and Mordor's army that came from the East were Asians and Africans in appearance. No real racism there, it just mirrors the war and conquest in history's past. Kinda like when the Romans invaded Africa or when the Mongols invaded Europe.

Well I was not thinking of any racism before, yet now I think I am.
