I've been playing around with some coloring lately, because I miss painting. I pulled this figure out of a Teen Titans page pencilled by Matthew Clark and just started slapping down some colors in PainterX. I've still got a long way to go and I'm also trying to decide if coloring under the linework or using it to create full rendered images is what I want to do with this. This is somewhere in the middle at this point. I painted over some of the pencils, but left them in a lot of other spots. Obviously still very rough and unfinished, but a fun way to kill a few hours.

Hell of a good start...I could never get my head into the "painted" look....Keen to see it all finished up...

Sorry, I just looked at who`s this was...Your inks are amazing, and you can do the painter thing too....
Slightly jealous right now...

Thanks Rotin. I actually have my BA in art with emphasis in Painting. I used to paint 9 hours a day, but then I got married, had kids and the canvases got dusty. Can't use most of those chemicals around little guys. ;) So, this digital method is a pretty fun alternative, especially since PainterX has a new thing called "Real Brushes" that actually act like real brushes did in my experiences.

I would mark a little more the light area and shadow.

Nice job, Jeremy - Boy, you're just multi-talented aren't you? :har:
One crit: I'd pay a little more attention to the arrangement of values here. And admittedly, I haven't seen any of your fully-painted stuff, so you may be more proficient in a full scene. I think if you flip this over to grayscale, you might find that certain areas run together in terms of light and dark: they don't separate quite as well as they should. So a few minor adjustments will give better separation between figure and background, more form generally, and so on---
Again: nice work. :)

Thanks Miguel and BKMDog. I went back to this a little last night to tighten some things up and try to get some more contrast and volume in the piece. I think, though, that your crits still hold true after my attempts. I'll try to get back in there again, but it may be a while since this is just play art and not work art. :(
Here's the updated version and a closer detail since they always seem to do that in my art history classes.

To use films of movies and pictures as reference.
Try to imitate colored pencil when it colors.

Thanks Miguel. Looking at film and photography probably would be helpful.

You've got a good handle on things tech-wise. Now it's all about the lighting. The way the background already plays, I get a sort of "thunderstorm, lightning flash, rear-left of the figure/right of the page" kind of feeling.
I guess my feelings can get pretty specific sometimes. Sorry ;)
Nice work Jeremy - I really like it! Been delving into the painting thing myslef lately - its both theraputic and frustrating! I'll see you at ECCC this year.

Thanks Spacious. That is very specific. My descriptions usually come out much less articulate. Congrats.
Hey Jason. Good to hear from you. Are you doing digital or traditional painting? Also, are having a table this year at ECCC? I'll stop by or at least hopefully see you around there.
