If anybody has trouble with their Illustrator crashing, I think I found out what some of it is.

It's certain actions, like duplicating layers, making masks, etc. Other actions, such as character and paragraph adjustment, Save as, don't do it. So you may need to go through your actions and delete some, unfortunately  :yuk: . The crashing caused my project to be late (and the flu didn't help). It was crashing constantly, until I deleted these actions. Now it seems to be fine.

OY! I hate crashes. Sorry to hear you got slammed the hard way. Sounds like you need to delete the preferences file then rebuild that laundry list of actions.

If you're using Windows, you may want to do a search for temp files. If you've got a lot of 'em related to Illustrator, you may need to do a re-install. I had that problem with constant crashing, did a re-install and that cleared it in my case. I couldn't tell you what I did wrong in the initial installation, though, I only know that the constant crashing was grabbing boatloads of free space and the program was running slower and slower and slower as a result.

So that may be an issue as well---

I have a Mac and I use Cocktail (yes, that's the name) which does a great job in cleaning the cache and files.

I love it! Illustrator never crashes anymore since I deleted those actions. I always save the actions now on my external drive, just in case. And I try to delete Illustrator preferences at least every week. The project is finished, finally!

But I do need to rebuild my actions every other week. I opened up an old set, and Illustrator didn't like it. I'm starting to think with each book I should have a different set, like I did with the last one. That way if it crashes, I can check which action is causing it.

I've started doing that too...not because of the crashes, but because of the directories...it's easier to rebuild the set than find the damn files half the time.

I've stumbled across an ellipsis (...) crash a couple times. Copy'n'paste from a script where an ellipsis was used and in the process of backspacing to adjust the text into the right shape, if I backspace and delete the ellipsis, the app shuts down.

So I try not to do that any more. :/
