The deal between Konami and Sony became official today. Michael De Luca is producing the film for Sony.
Uwe Boll stated he wanted to direct. Konami execs said no thanks.

Hell yeah. Doesn't surprise me though, especially since MGS4 is due to come out exclusively (for now) in Sony's PS3. It will be very beneficial for both company.

I think he'd make a good looking, gruff Snake. Karl Urban, maybe? Or has he done one too many video game movies? I'm hoping they handle this more as an espionage/action thriller than a video game movie.

Although the Solid Snake character bears many similarities (personality wise) to the Punisher, I still think Thomas Jane might not be a bad choice...

Really depends on which Snake they plan on using.

Snake look mostly the same in his various incarnations. The first Metal Gear game uses Tom Berenger's likenesses though, while Col. Campbell look like Richard Crenna.
I vote for Ray Park as the Ninja!

I'm not so sure about Hugh Jackman. I don't even think that he was the right choice for Wolverine, although he is a pretty decent actor.
You know what, here's a crazy idea. Scratch Snake, let's get Orlando Bloom as Raiden for the title role.

Wolvering is good because originally wolvie was based on Clint Eastwood and next to the singer of stp, hugh jackman looks pretty damn close.
Moonrider
02-23-2007, 10:38 PM
Problem is, Snake was modeled after Michael Biehn and Kurt Russel, not Eastwood.
I can't see Jackman as Snake. I saw him last night in The Prestige, he has a big grin and a rather flamboyant style. Not exactly like what I pictured for someone who are as gruff and cold as Solid Snake.
Biofungus
02-23-2007, 10:56 PM
Eastwood (even with a stunt double) would need a couple of new knees, hips, a pacemaker, and maybe a padded suit to play the role now.
Btw, if this is successful enough for a parody to be made about it, I can totally see Patrick Warburton playing the lead
Moonrider

If it's based on MGS4, Eastwood may work as Snake.
Duke383426

That would be fantastic to see Eastwood as old snake. I also dig the Bloom = Raiden idea! :har: Jackman did the Wolverine character justice. He is a very talented actor. Since no other candidates are coming to mind I wouldnt mind seeing him take up the role. I just hope the series doesnt suck as so many other VG to movie movies have.

Ug....another mediocre game to film attempt. This is one title that doesn't need the treatment as the games themselves are more or less a series of cutscenes interspersed with small doses of repetitive gameplay - cut out the gameplay and there's your ready-made, sleep inducing movie. This has all the potential to be yet another hugely over-rated flic from probably THE most over-rated and dull game franchise ever.

I dont think you can say that the Metal Gear series was repetitive game play. At the very worse it has a very bizarre plot twist at the end of MG2. The metal gear games were huge, they spanned several consoles and received very favorable ratings. They even remade the PS release for Gamecube! How many other series did that? All in all its a series that is still thriving and releasing exceptional products.

Exactly. There are an infinite amount of ways you can play through the game. I have played through MG3, 10 or so times now finding different ways to get through the game. Plus with the stealth suit it can make it hilarious to watch people freak out. In subsitence you get a little different camera angle and it makes it easier to see what you are doing. I personally like planting explosives and then hiding up in a tree and watching the mayhem unwind. Then snipe the remainder and run off.

Thankyou for your insightful input there. I couldn't care less if it was the first to do anything - it is a moot point and doesn't make it any better because of it. I'm not going to suddenly get all pretentious over Citizen Kane just because it pioneered some ground-breaking cinematography, so I'm certainly not going to do the same as far as a video game is concerned. Your argument in defence of this overhyped and mediocre game is as empty as any I could put forward to criticise it. It is 'opinion' & I know I'm in the minority on this one - you can carry on making weak attempts to make intellectual contextualisations on behalf of a 'game' all day long but I'm not going to suddenly like it because you think I should.

Ah yes, real combat wounds that need attention. I like how they integrated the life bar into that as well. With it having that "buffer" for damage that you have taken and you cant have full health until you healed everything. 2 other things I liked was that you could tranq the venomous animals such as a cobra then throw it at someone! And in most military facilities if you found their food source you could blow it up and in either in the next "scene" or when you came back through the soldiers were starving and not as alert as usual.

I think it would be interesting if they set the movie during Solid Snake's active duty in FOXHOUND and get betrayed by his own team during a mission. We never really get to see him during these periods within the game. In Metal Gear he's still a rookie and in Metal Gear 2 he's already retired. Maybe giving some insights on why he retired in the first place.

Something else you can do that is fun, Is unlock unlimited TNT and plant them strategically around the yard of Grozni-grad, then blow one when guard gets too close to it then as they send more and more guards to investigate just keep lighting them up!
The more I think about it the more I think the movie will need some REALLY good writers because they need to be able to be serious about the mission but in some cases allow for a little childish entertainment :P

Wow those are also good picks. I am not a fan of Xbox at all so I guess I will just bide my time and wait for the price of the ps3 to drop. And you can say whatever you want but to me the Nintendo wii is more or less targeted to kids it seems. Their games are for elementary kids and while I have enjoyed their games in the past the only really good games were the mario brother sereis including smash melee and Mario cart. So if you want a good "adult" aimed game you need to go with PS3 or Xbox. Sorry, just got tired of my friends all telling me that I need to get a wii instead and always bashing on ps3.

Chances of it jumping to X-box anytime soon is slim. It could not be a port so the game would have to redesigned from scratch. So if it comes out on the ps3 in 2008. I would say maybe 2010 for X-box.

It was heavily rumored in many games publicatioins. Kojima himself said that it is possible for MGS4 to run on XBOX 360 hardware. Other developers have even stated that making games for PS3 is actually harder than making games for X360. Yes, I also doubt that an X360 version would come out at the same time as the PS3 version. Not because of technological constraints, but rather because of the marketing deal already made with Sony.
But if it will come out in X360 eventually, that would just give me one more reason for me not to buy a PS3.

I think if it weren't for Gans Konami would have never approve this MGS movie. They were very protective about their titles.

As they should be because it is a kick as series and story. To have someone half-ass it would be to kill it.

Speaking to ComingSoon, producer Michael De Luca said that now that the strike was over, he and Columbia Pictures were gonna meet with Wimmer to talk to him about writing the script, and presumably directing too.

I'd let Wimmer direct - his stuff's always pretty. However, I'd chop his hands off so he'd never lay pencil to paper for any script EVER AGAIN.

You need someone who really knows the game to direct this. I can't think of any right now, but for something that resemble a war movie I think Ridley Scott would be cool.
I think that's a bad idea you should get someone that is familiar with the subject matter but not afraid to make changes. That quirky Japanese sensability might not transfer the same way. A nod to the fans now and again is fine but fan films tend to go a bit over board

I think they should just let David Hayter play Snake!

Well, there are good changes and there are bad changes. The differences between RE movie series and the games for example, is what I categorize as bad. What's more imporant is the director's vision and how it matches with the subject matter than anything else. To do that, he/she at least should know the games well enough or not hesitant to study it for reference.
Wimmer, I'm not sure. I love Equlibrium but Ultraviolet was crap. I hope he's going to bring his A-game for this one.

THIS IS THE MOVIE THAT I'M WAITING FOR!!! :w00t: :w00t: :har:
Sorry Jet and Jackie, but Solid Snake comes before you two!!
To be real, I think Christian Bale would fit perfectly as Solid Snake. many people say that the original voice actors would fit the bill, but it just doesn't work that way in Hollywood. I wished John Turk (the guy who motion captured and played as Sub-Zero in the Mortal Kombat 3 games) was Sub-Zero in the MK movie, but they got somebody better.
David Hayter, yes, I respect his work. He will always be Solid Snake in my world. But Christian Bale has his looks and his voice down.
I think either Collin Chou or maybe Michael Jai White would fit perfectly for Cyborg Ninja (Gray Fox). But I don't know if......no, wait, Scratch that! Null is Gray Fox, and he appears to be Caucasian.
Hmmmm. Revolver Ocelot........who could play that guy?
If Liquid Snake was to appear in this game, then I would say Patrick Swayze, but we all know that's not going to happen.
But the Solid Snake cast definitely fits for Christian.

Grey Fox is caucasian. His civilian name was Frank Jaeger.
If we're doing a casting call, I'd vote Doug Jones for Psycho Mantis and John Heder as Otacon. I think Rutger Hauer can be considered for Revolver Ocelot.

I knew who Gray Fox was, but he is not caucasian. He's appears to be, but he's not. I'll look it up just to be sure. But you might be right on this one.
John Heder would fit the bill as Otacon. I don't know who Doug Jones is. I'll check him out as well. :har:

Frank is born from German-American and Vietnamese parents, Frank's parents died during the Vietnam War while he was still a child.
This was in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
So Mark Dacascos would TOTALLY fit the bill to play as Frank Jaegar/Gray Fox. The guy is actually a "mutt" himself. :har:

I like! Though I also think Jon Voight would kill as Revolver.

I would say storywise it needs to cover Metal Gear 1 and 2, before it's introduction on the next gen consoles because they are what the fans are most unfamiliar with, that and there is an awful lot of room to bring in new characters and story elements.
My picks would be...
Solid Snake - Viggo Mortensen
Revolver Ocelot - Anthony Hopkins
Big Boss - Donald Sutherland
Also we can bring in some new villians just for the movie, adaptions of the game villians just wouldn't work in my eyes since the majority died in their appearances.
Have some unknowns play the new characters, TV actors if need be.

Actors....
Viggo- Great actor, but doesn't capture the essence of Solid Snake much like how Christian Bale would. If we are going back into the Metal Gear era, then he needs to be a bit younger. Christian would fit the bill.
Anthony Hopkins- Revolver Ocelot is a little athletic. Anthony, I don't know. Is he Russian?
Donald Sutherland- MONEY!! $$$ :w00t: But we also need him to be a little atheltic as well. Bigg Boss fights Snake at the end, remember? :(
Everything else....
You is right about this. I do think that they need to touch on the earlier iterations of the MG series. Metal Gear would be a great start.
Why am I so compelled to say that Tracy Lynn Cruz would fit just right for Jennifer in Metal Gear? I think this woman need some Hollywood work.
Hmmmm..........
If he has any acting talent, then I think Bobby Lashley would fit the bill for Vulcan Raven. He has the physique for him, and I think he has so much potential. Plus, it can give him some experience on acting.

I agree. Solid Snake in MGS was already a veteran and technically retired. There is more to the history of this character that has never been touched in the games. I personally would like the movie to explore his universe more without crossing over to the games. At least it should be referenced, but not shown. Re-enacting the games' cutscenes for the movie would be crazy and expensive, and I hate it when they reimagine stuff like in Resident Evil.
My idea is they should make a movie that start with Solid Snake's time with his old FOXHOUND teammates such as pre-Grey Fox Frank Jaeger, continue the story around the time between game 1 & 2 and end with something that happened before MGS. A movie to fill in the gaps, so to speak. My other idea is to just pit Snake against a totally new enemy group that is still connected to Outer Heaven/Zanzibar Land.

Well he's called an actor for a reason, he's done accents before with no trouble and Ocelot while he may be Russian, for the most part his accent is American.
As for the athleticism, well who cares, it's not like you'll find a 60+ actor who can play the role and do their own stunts very easily, plus it doesn't have to be a dead on interpretation, both actors can still pull it off I think.

He has no acting talent whatsoever, until he has some charm or character he can bring to wrestling, acting will still be a long way off.
If you really have to bring wrestlers into a movie like this I prefer they don't speak, same goes for musicians, comedians and whoever else.
This movie will be too epic to take chances on stuff like that.

Can't quote. On my psp.
I just thought that Bob would fit for Vulcan Raven, that's all. I still think he has potential but thats just me. But as far as Anthony and Donald, and from a character perspective, they could pull them off. I'm just thinking in to this so much because since I'm an avid fan of the series I just want this to be "perfect", you know?
