View Full Version : LOGO/Title Draw-Off
Locoduck
01-16-2007, 01:23 PM
Okay this is a draw off and a competition. I have a book coming out in February Called TRAGIC THE CLOWN. It will debut at the Orlando Megacon. I am looking for a title or logo design for the cover. It is a one shot guaranteed to see print. The winning logo will be used as the the logo for the book, and be published. The Winner will be listed as the Designer of the Title, and have a listing to their website as well in the book. Winner will also recieve comps of the book and a small fee.
Colors for the LOGO should be in Reds, Blacks, or Whites. But RED is a must.
The Logo should reflect a whimsical circus/party like quality.
All print rights will become property of www.locoduck.com.
The voting will be held by a private vote between myself and a handful of consultants.
All votes will be final, and www.locoduck.com reserves the right change or alter the logo before printing.
I hope this gets some attention, as it is a nice opportunity for recognition and some cash.
Contest ends Jan 31st.
Commentary, questions and Artwork can be placed in this thread.

I'm wondering the same thing. I've got several ideas already, but each has a different theme.
Does this seem like a sheister's deal to any of ya'll? What exactly do we get out of this?

I think we need to know more about the main character. More specifics.

Hey OZ why don't you read the guidelines to answer your question. Money, Publication, Credit, and Comps of the book. Plus a portfolio piece. Seems like you get something. Sheesh.
I'm posting a little more background info momentarily.

Nah, Mike's on the up and up. Even if he wasn't offering what he is (and I think it's pretty fair), he's a good guy.
I'd consider participating, but it took me 4 years to do my website logo :p (and I fully intend to *hire* someone to do the logo for my comic when it's ready to go  )

Thanks Bio!
And speaking of Bio's......
Here is an image of Tragic.
http://www.locoduck.com/tragicava.jpg
He is a big city Party Clown. The most hired in the city. Very happy go lucky in contrast to the face paint that he wears. Has a dark secret though. Meets a Party planner named (PARTY) Marty and falls in love.
The book is obviously not your traditional super hero book. More character driven. Trying to pull off a Romantic Dramedy in funny book form.
I'm not looking for something real over the top complicated, as it's going to be on a mostly black cover.
I was going to do it myself as I've done everything else, (writing, pencils, inks, greyscales, layouts, and lettering) But I figured I'd toss it out as a contest to give the forum a real WIN SOMETHING vibe. And give you crazy guys and gals another chance at publication, and exposure. But of course it is a DRAW OFF which means you don't HAVE to participate, but at least you get something tangible out of this win.
Anyway, that's that. Any other questions just holla!

Hi!
Do you need a logo for the book or a title, or both? Just wondering. Very cool draw-off though. :har:

Oh, I know he's a good guy. I just think having a logo and your name is kinda pointless unless that's what you went to school for. Sorry that it came out sounding harsh. I hadn't really thought about how it sounded at the time. Just thought it was kinda weird, never thought logos were such a big deal. Oh well, learn somethin' new everyday.

This is definetely a cool and unique draw-off. I was going to do a title thing but you mentioned logo so i thought a logo it'd be easier to place on the book, besides changes can always be made. I didn't know what to do till you showed us the face of Tragic and his backstory. As soon as I saw his face i knew he'd have to be part of the logo, so i wanted his face to be there and then i had to play with the text to make sure it's fun, since he's a pretty happy go lucky clown. So, i played with the text a bit and then added some effects to make sure it stands out over the black background. I figured the black circle would fit on the cover since you said it's mostly black anyways. I'm still not sure if I got it spot on so i may change it by jan 31st, but till then this is how i think the logo should be. Phew!!! :)

A little more info.
Here is the rough cover design and roughly where the placement will be. There are some cool things going on here so far. I don't want the logo/title to distract too much from the image. Something simple, even solitude-ish.
And a little more background on Tragic. He's not like a mass murderer or rapist or anything. Think quasimodo under the paint, and how people might react to him without the paint.
It really is a love story/ romantic comedy, that everyone can relate too.
http://www.locoduck.com/tragiccover3.jpg
Incidently, I'll more than likely have a page in the book to showcase the logos everyone submitted, so everyone wins. It will be in the back of the book with a few pinups that are being done.

  Woah! OK, looks like I got totally the wrong idea there... this second pic looks a lot more realistic (and borderline-suicidal) than the cheerful, cartoony first image. Guess it's back to the ol' drawing board.
So which style is the interior in?
Locoduck

Actually Matt, there were quite a few things I liked about your design. The interiors are in the vain of the first posted Image. This is just a rough draft of the cover....waaay overly rendered.

I think maybe the white type might be a little over powering but the little clown is supposed to be subtle and not to take away from the art that Locoduck wants to put on the cover. I'll tweak with the white type and see what I come up with.

Really like your work Rothart, but to be honest I totally prefer your second posting (with the subtle clown), it felt more like a logo in itself. To bring out the clown a little more (and I agree with Rotin, it does get a bit lost) try just switching the colors - white for "Tragic" and red for the rest, as with your later ones. Nice dude.

I'm gonna have to (respectfully, of course) disagree with ya here. Attempt #3 works better on a number of levels.
~ With the white 'Tragic' (as opposed to #2) it gives the subtle illusion that the clown is standing in a 'doorway' of sorts. Very appropriate given the story description. It also allows for his nose to stand out in red, as opposed to the shilouette in #2.
~ The additional 'outline' of the clown figure makes it more pronounced; he doesn't "blend in", which is also a key story element.
~ With 'The Clown' in two lines (as opposed to one line in #4), it seems a bit more disjointed but, in this case, that is a good thing. It is reflective of the character without being a dead giveaway.
http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h126/Rothart/Tragic-Logo3.jpgNot my call to make, obviously, but my $4.95 on the matter.

I've changed mine a bit too, since Loco posted the cover design, i've realized there's no point to put his face in the logo since his face will be all over the cover, so i've changed it to text only for now. That is unless I find something else i can do with it by the deadline. :)

You know, I could TOTALLY see this one being the only thing on the cover, without the face close-up. Just a black background and this logo. That way the little clown wouldn't take away from the face or vice versa.
I could see myself picking up the book with this title on black. There's nothing wrong with the close-up, it's just that the simplicity would grab me.

This was beyond tough! It came down to two battling it out at the end. But this one just seemed to capture the entire mood of the story! I had to change the logo up a bit colorwise to accomodate the cover illustration, but in doing so it gave it a nice weathered face paint look, and old time carny poster vibe.
Thank you so much for participating!
