so I want to know what type of comic story do you like?
Do you like the old school stories where the hero actually has a secret identity and tries harder than hell to juggle his two lives?
What about modern type: Marvel characters kinda don't care if people know who they are...This seems like the secret Identity is a DC thing
what about sci fi...where there are no costumes and the hero is flawed beyond compare but still does the right thing
horror comics....
I Know I missed some genres but you guys know what you like...let me know!

I like stories that have a little bit of everything. Where it can be serious one moment and make you sad, but the next page can make you laugh so hard.

Moebious type stuff is great.
Sci fi

"Modern" superhero stuff, mainly. Sorry! Old-school superhero comics drive me nuts! I understand the importance and significance, but I can only take so much at a time!
Then in no particular order; magic/occult, Sci-Fi, (mainly through Star Wars), and fantasy (Conan).

I like superhero stories that are rooted in stark reality. Mike Grell's Green Arrow series and Frank Miller's Daredevil really pioneered this kind of storytelling.
I love all kinds of comics. The variety of style and story will always keep me reading.

I agree with the no porn/ sex in comics, also cursing doesn't belong. Kirby wouldn't have done it so that's a good reason. ;)
Comics were meant to be for all ages. That's why there's hardly any new blood coming into the hobby.
Silver age/ Golden age bronze age super heroes.
Modern superheroes, even though Marvel and DC have their problems, they need to fix.
Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Cosmic.
Any comic with Jack Kirby as a creator. Also, Kirby/ Lee. :bounce:
Madman, Megaton man, Flaming Carrot, Lullaby.

Maybe, in "mature" comics, but not in mainstream comics.

i like good comics plain and simple. if it's a western, and well done, i'm all about it. same with sci fi, fantasy or pretty much anything else. my main preferences seem to run Superhero simply because i have followed several of those titles for years, but i keep myself open for something new all the time. oh, and i really don't like romance comics. i don't care if it's Eisner material, i hate those. :yuk:

I do agree with Scribe...profanity and nudity should not be in a comic that is promoted or peddled to children. I always thought Spawn kinda bordered on this as well as some of the early Image books years ago. I haven't really read any of them since..so I think they've kinda seperated them. In the mid and late 70's back when comics were in magazine / newspaper stores (anyone remember those days?) Warren publishing was having success with books like Creepy and Vampirella. There was a deluge of magazines that began to come out from smaller publishers. Not featuring alot of profanity, but minor sexuality. Low cut or torn dresses. Properly placed fabric covering juuust enough of the nipple, breast, rump to not get anyone in trouble.
None of those titles had warning labels. So it's not like this hasn't existed in our industry for decades. Just hidden much better. ;)
Scribe...I apologize for assumin' you were steppin' on my liberties!

I don't think the intentions were to make it a kids comic..But with McFarlanes popularity coming off his run on Spiderman at Marvel..I think the kids just kinda followed him as well. And I don't recall that they ever turned readers away for being to young. That and fashioning one of Spawns covers similar to one of the most recognizable Spiderman covers of all time. (purely becuase they released 50 million versions of it.) helped pull in the McFarlane groupies...me included.

my definition of kid is anyone under 18....I guess the most realistic definiton of kid is 15 and under. I feel like I'm a big kid however, because I still act the same as I did when I was 12, at least that's what my mom says. And I don't think it's a compliment coming from her, but it might as well be...I'm never gonna grow up! Well when it comes to reading comics and watching cartoons.

Yeah, but it didn't carry the code. Everyone looks for the code on their books. Right? ;)
Have you ever read/seen an interview with McFarlane? The guy's mouth is worse than anything I've ever seen printed in the mainstream. :)

Genre doesn't matter so much. More specifically single issues telling a full story in themselves. I really hate the written for the trade format with a lot of stories nowadays. Do away with that, I think the trades would be stronger with less decompression.

I like stories that keep me enetertained. I very rarely like superhero stuff and I'm getting rather sick of anti hero stuff as well. How ever, WATCHMEN is classic.
Horror comics are OK if they are well written.
Fantasy is OK if it's sorta dark modern fantasy rather than the crap they got with elves and dragons and wizards and people who are cats.
With that said, I do really like Blacksad, a detective story where people are animals.
I really like nonfiction stuff too. Maus, Perspepolis, things like that dealing with huge world events.
I also really like Noir stuff. Sin City is OK but I'm a feminist and sometimes it's really hard to read Frank Millers work and not go  at the sight of his women. (I know that icon is called confused but it looks more like a grrrk.)
I haven't gotten into any cyberpunk. Sci Fi as a rule is almost always boring. I can't get into stories where the technology is so advanced they may as well be magic spells and the aliens are so weird they may as well be people who are cats, dwarves, dragons and so forth.
I like stuff that has to do with Gods though. Spirituality is a big part of my life. Even made up "Gods" like the sandman are really enjoyable.

If it's something being marketed to kids, you are absolutely right. But in something like Sandman, the mild sex scenes and occassional swears belonged perfectly.

Gaimen said that DC only nixed something once. He got a memo or something that stated, "Characters in the DC Universe do not masturbate."
I almost pissed myself when I heard that.
Also, I'm pretty sure that's not in effect anymore. I'm sure I've seen at least reference to masturbation in Vertigo.

For reading I enjoy many driffrent styles... but yeah i lean more to the old school super-hero stuff... at the same time my favorite book out there right now is Usagi Yojimbo, and that has no suoerhero or even human in it it just a great book... so yeah i read alomost anything. westrens, super-hero, humor, fansty sci fi whatever ... as long as it fun. dark stuff just don't do it for me...
as for what write/draw is humor cartoonie superhero stuff... I love the old cartoons that have the 2 level of humor... bugs bunny and the likes stuff that have both stuff for kids or us so called grown-ups... my tag line for the book is, "super-hero fun for everyone"

There was a Witches book a few years ago that mentioned it repeatedly, though I don't remember if it was just blatantly referred to or they specifically said the word. First Vertigo book I ever got on a regular basis too. Bit of a change from the superhero stuff I usually got at the time.

Man, all this hero worshipping Jack 'King' Kirby and Stan Lee... hey, I get it. According to Freud you ought to kill your father, not felate him.
Don't get wrong, I still like reading my copies of both. I don't care for genres; the more genre, the more generic. Cyberpunk western kungfu romantic super heros with every day problems.
My work thats publically known (to about 10 people I think) is sci-fi/horror, but really, its just horror. Sci-fi provides a convient suspension of disbelief.

Why would these things be childish? They're just another kind of media vehicle for whatever stories one would like to tell. Whether it's drawn or live-action, illustrated or solid prose makes no difference.

Comics were meant to be for all ages. That's why there's hardly any new blood coming into the hobby.
First things first, profanity is all about perception. Bad words only carry as much power as you give them. And how does using words like shoot or dang make it any different? You mean basically the same thing, you're just using different words. Words are words, nothing more and nothing less. Curse words change with the times. Malarky used to be a curse word, now it just get's giggles. If the F-word offends you, don't LET it offend you. That is your power. Your problem, no one elses.
Second things second, comics are NOT only for kids.
I am ok with profanity, if that's how the people in the story would really speak. If it's just for shock then it's lame.
Any genre CAN be good, depending on the story told. I am nothing close to a fantasy fan, but Dark Horse's Conan is one of my favorite books every month because the stories are well told. It depends on the story, and that depends on the writer.
