Illustration of DC Comics Harley Quinn
(along with Batman, Poison Ivy, and The Joker)
Pen and Ink on Blue Line Pro Artboard
Original Size: 11 x 17
Digital coloring on Adobe Photoshop
I opted keeping the colors in flat tones for this illustration to stay with the traditional look of the playing card aspect of the piece. All comments and critiques are appreciated. Thanks!

You need to rework your colours, everything is too flat and the reds seem to similar. Why not try dulling down the background or adding a blue (receding) tint to it, these ideas might being Harley forward and create some depth.
You may be going for a card approach, but her leg breaking the cards border implies that she is infront of the card.

Thank you for the review sevans, but wouldnt creating depth defeat the illusion of Harley climbing out of the playing card? It was a design aspect I bounced back and forth with for a while. Keep Harley colored to look flat and two dimensional or round her out in the traditional sense and keep everything else flat...

You have to blend. If you don't make her pop out then this is just a 2d piece and nothing truly exciting at that. If you blend the 3d(her) and slowly change her to 2d when you get to the card you will have a very appealing picture. As it is you don't get the sense that she is coming out, just that the whole thing is a card board cut out. Varying line weight in your inks will help as well. Sweet idea though.

I agree with Sevans and Oz, blend the 2d into 3d, and youll have a hook! Also I would consider putting the card into perspective, and than facing her bazooka to the reader. Cool Idea.

Oooooh...okay, THAT I get and yah, that would be a really cool effect. I'm a total novice when it comes to coloring though. Anyone interested in taking a crack at it PM me with some contact info and I'll send the image over at pretty much any size and rez you'd need it. I would love to see that 3d to 2d fade.
