hi kids today we tackle streetfighter badass akuma! i get my reference, handy dandy china marker and start a sketch

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/kaine420/P1010464-1.jpg

i work a lot looser than most guys(i'm covering it all in paint anyway),but once i'm happy with the sketch....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/kaine420/P1010471.jpg

..i start adding color..i do the whole thing in white first because it's a black shirt...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/kaine420/P1010472.jpg

..i try to show form and depth at this stage..there's probably a lot easier way to do this, but the ride is half the fun!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/kaine420/P1010473.jpg

...i use createx paint and comart together. the comart comes from my caricature days, it's what i learned with and what i feel comfortable with for faces and flesh....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/kaine420/P1010476.jpg

...the paint is rather thin for fastfood art and i have to use a lot of layers, but i work fairly quickly so i don't mind...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/kaine420/P1010477.jpg

it's been a little over an hour here http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/kaine420/P1010480.jpg and i check the ticket..i get 48% of the subtotal, so effort/payment= about another 15 min. i'll put in...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/kaine420/P1010478-1.jpg i drop the name in, add touch ups and in about 1 1/2 hrs i quit. i was really having fun with this and could have kept going..but i am trying to make a living so i let it go here..the customer loved it and i get to post the steps with you guys. i do this to help guys who might learn a trick from me, and for myself because it lets me see what i'd do different. i also show customers (it makes a good visual for the customer of the steps when i have to charge more for doing things on black!)

are those createx paints you are using? doesn't really matter but you may want to invest in some opaque paints for the darker shirts...it makes a WORLD of difference...

I did this one years ago when I used to do shirts

http://www.westcoastairbrush.com/gallery/data/media/6/hellboy.jpg

you get really soild colors on darker shirts with the opaque colors

other than the paint this shirt is nicely done..how long have you been airbrushing?

that's one mean looking hellboy!! i started using an airbrush in june 2005,to color caricatures i'd draw in graphite. i started at full fledged airbrush shop doing shirts in september2006 ,i hadn't done any fabric work(or any else really) untill then.

i need to research paints  i have a few opaques i use but the process is totally different than working with transparent on paper which is all i've done untill now...i learned the "watercolor method" where you leave the white of your paper as highlights and never used white paint untill a few months ago( ILOVEWHITEPAINT)!!
i'm still learning and i plan on experimenting more now that buisness is slower.!

I think you choose a cool character to draw and really it looks pretty bad ass to me. But really I have to say that I think the work may be improved if you drew it in a cooler a style. I think the style you use is cool, but there are cooler styles that I like more. Like the kind used in anime? That’s cool. I also think Jim Lee’s style is cool, maybe you should look up his work if you haven’t heard of him. He drew X-Men and some other stuff that was…very interesting. No offense on your work though! Because it is so cool! But hey we can all be a little better. Just work a little more on making your drawings cooler and anatomy which is off slightly in this picture.

I think I saw a spider on my pant leg. It might have just been my imagination but it scared me so I took off my pants. I’m thinking there may be a bug of some sort in my pants. My pants are actually right now on the floor, underneath my chair. But I think if I try to move them possibly a slug-type-bug* might be in them and if it gets on me I will freak out. It has happened to me before. I don’t know what I will do. If you think of something you can get back to me, until then I’ll just leave them where they are. If I move it with a pole (I don’t have a pole) it may get angry and climb fast up my pole and get on me. And then if it gets in the clothes I’m still wearing or my hair I will really freak out. So don’t suggest that idea I don’t think it will work. I think all the chocolate I have laying around is attracting bugs, and maybe mice and stuff too. I don’t know what I can do about it, they live in the walls and stuff and I can hear them when I try to sleep. I get so worried that if I sleep they will come out and crawl all over me, possibly into my mouth and ears and anus. A lot of times I can’t get to sleep because of that. I’ve considered wearing ear plugs so I won’t hear them, but I thought they may take the opportunity to attack me. Why did God even invent bugs?

Have you seen the Michael Hui film, Games Gamblers Play? It was his first directional job and it was a big hit that made Raymond Chow a lot of money, but I was disappointed in it. Michael Hui looks ridiculous with that little bit of facial hair, I’m glad he got rid of that. I was amazed he improved so much in a short time to make The Private Eyes a few years later. I like Michael Hui pretty well, better than Stephen Chow, but most of Michael Hui’s movies haven’t been that great. Well I don’t want to write too much because I’m going to post a review on my website soon. But if you haven’t seen any Michael Hui films I recommend The Private Eyes, and I also have heard Security Unlimited and Chicken and Duck Talk are very good but I haven’t seen those. Either way I think Michael Hui is a better entertainer than Buster Keaton or the movie Scanners. I’d like to see some Michael Hui fanart from you, I think your style would look really cool.

*Slug is in reference to general shape. I believe its color to be black and to be of a different texture and density than a slug. Also faster and not nearly as moist. Does anyone know what type of bug this may be? I haven't seen one before.

your a strange one..but to each there own i guess... i try to stay close to the reference, though i should take more time with the under drawing. things kind of take shape as i do them , and that's exciting to a newb like me. i'm going to take cat's advise and buy a bucket load of opaque paint's.i'll need to practice with them for faces because of the difference in application than transparents.

can't really help you with the bugs and slugs...but i suggest leaving the smack alone :)

regardless, thanks for the tips and mind phluck

Hey evolver, I'm a big fan of the work you're posting up on the site. It's an alternative take on a lot of our favorite characters, and a completely different medium altogether. I'd definitely delve into some of the other paints out there, as I think a heavier paint would have given your Akuma that 'pop' that Cat's AMAZING Hellboy has. Plus, experimenting is only going to make you better. Keep the shirts coming dude.

here is the thing..using the opaque colors on a black shirt is similar to using the white as a base. Only you are using the color that is actually IN the image rather than having to create it on white paint..which can build up and the color paint then sits on top rather than blending with it. Then when you press it the color tends to either lift or fade.

so for instance..with the Hellboy..insted of painting the whole area the image is on white.. I actually painted out just he red areas then you can take the transparent colors and layer them on top of that creating the shadows and highlights etc...
Check this site (http://www.westcoastairbrush.com/) out...I have not been there in a LONG time because I quit doing shirts years ago... But they have tons of great information on there in the forums and tutorials.
