Well, it's my annual sketch of a Winter Girl. This young lady I saw leaning against a light post on a cold and misty day in San Francisco. I couldn't tell if she was dialing a cell phone or choosing a playlist on her mp3 player. Her pose kind of described that she might be avoiding glare on the LCD screen, thus her bent over posture. Not sure if I remebered it clearly though. Yes, it's from memory.

I threw on some quick colors too.

Happy New Year! :D

Great work as always, Tom. It reminded me that I need to pick up the Watermark. :)

Very cool. Nice and natural, with a sweet "slice of life" quality.

Hey folks, thanks. That 'slice of life' feel is what I really want to reflect anytime I do these winter girl moments. As much as I'd like to muster up the courage to approach these women for a photo op, I will ultimately end up sketching them from memory and try to capture what inspired me to notice them in the first place. I'm usually on the go when these moments happen.

It's a different approach from cafe sketching, where you are doing a life drawing without the subject knowing. This way is a much more challenging exercise - using imagination and what memories each individual evoked at the time. Plus, it makes it more anonymous for both the subject and myself. Not that I wouldn't like to meet these pretty ladies. :)

So thanks for the kind comments! It's very encouraging.

Thank you for NOT drawing another sexy New Years girl. There's enough of those roaming around :D

This is a well done piece. I like the feel of it.

That's not the type of artists I was thinking about.

When I first saw your sketch I was thinking Fantagraphics. HMMMM.

Hmmm. You'll have to share that artist you were thinking about when you think of it. Now I'm curious.

Kyle Baker is another inspiration if that helps. ;)

OK, one artist is Gilbert Hernandez.

The other is Frank Cho.

Large picture.

Also, there's a slight resemblance to Dan Clowes. (Ghost World.)

Hey there you go! Have you been to my website? I have a link to Cho in my Inspirations Links.

And I've always enjoyed Ghostworld and Love & Rockets.
