View Full Version : Need inkers advice

I've been wrestling with a few things lately. One of the things I need to do is establish whether or not I need to improve my inking or just let a real inker do the job.
Here is a sample of my pencils. I posted these about 3 years ago.

Well maybe these aren't the best samples but they give off the main vibe of what my pencils are like. They're just a couple years old though. I have made major improvements since I drew these. Infact these were done on 8 x 11 typing paper even before I ever seen an artboard or sheet of bristol.
I'm sorry I can't give you the same images in both pencils and inks. I know that would really help I just don't have any. I ink as I pencil to save time.
And here's my ink work. I know I have some major issues I have to work out. These are more recent than the pencils about a year old.

What I really need is some advice and maybe if an experienced inker can gauge whether I can make the improvements in a reasonable amount of time or I should just stick to pencils because the inks are too far gone.
Be honest. Be brutal I don't care, but if you do- point out to me what needs work. Don't just take cheap shots validate your points. And please if you suck and just want to get off on some crap ass remark skip this all together and grow up.

Yep, you are definately a penciller and not an inker. Your pencils are very good but your inks unfortunately are rather weak. This is not unusual because working with a pencil is WAY different than working with a brush and nib. Inkers can't really afford mistakes. Send me a hi res of one of your pages and i will show you what i mean. vandal1z@yahoo.com

:) true words - but there are some who could handle both.....my first thought was that were two different persons which inked the pages - very different sometimes. Wait and you will see the different when Vandal have made the inks.

I'd be careful adding in too many messy lines; you seem to loose it a bit when you do hair. Always try and keep your lines smooth, and every line should have a purpose, don't just put some scribbly lines in certain areas 'because that's what hair looks like.' (Because it never looks good.)
I agree with Vandal about you being a penciller and not an inker; your pencil lines are very nice and polished.

Are you saying if I send you a high res pencilled page, you'll ink it?
If you are then I'm gonna do a page with tight pencils then send you that because I haven't got any of these pages in pencils. I inked them while penciling them. Maybe that was my mistake, to take a pencilers approach to ink a page.
Give me a couple of days, I'm on vacation right now and am away from home.

No problem, enjoy your vacation!
Stop inking with felt pens. If you're really good, it can look fine. But if you're not good at inking to start with and you use felt pens it ends up looking like high school notebook doodles.
The right tools make a huuuge difference.
Inking is art. If you can draw, you can ink. It's only a matter of if you choose to learn or not.

OK so what would you suggest using? Brushes I suppose but can you or anyone else tell me which brushes work for you?

I use Raphael 8408 kolinsky sable size 1 and 2. A lot of pros use Winsor Newton series 7. Pretty much the same thing, but I like the Raphael's slightly shorter hairs and larger diameter handle.

Actually I thought of that but their site is always down or under construction. I don't do cons and I have no way to beg for work. But I'd go in jockeying for writing and pencils.
