OK I'm hoping that the DW tournament is wrapping up with this round and this is what I've been working on to stop the advancement of this competition.

I'm having small hand, big head and broken back issues and somehow I managed to get a giant dinosaur skull into the mix. I think that Cavewoman's breasts are unbalanced but you tell me what's going on here.
Thanks,
EJ

have you seen Bud Root's Cavewoman? I gave her a reduction, trust me. lol
Thanks I'm glad you like it!

Oh yeah, This is Cavewoman and Red Sonja in case anyone is wondering.

The heads seem fine, the hands could be a tad bigger but it's ok. What bothers me is i don't really know what Sonja's standing on...is she standing on the dinosaur head or what? Also cave woman does seem to be bent at an interesting angle. Her shoulders seem too narrow compared to the rest of her torso, rib cage and boobs.
I don't know...it looks great but seems to be missing something.

I love it...The only thing that bothers me is the cave womans face. Her facial expression doesnt fit. She should look mad...

Looking good for the most part, Ed. I love the dynamics of Sonja's swining sword. You can really feel the momentum building. Also, the gravity and movement of her breasts is tremendous. I think you might want to reexamine her left leg. The foot doesn't quite seem grounded and there's a tangent issue with the dinosaur's mouth that makes her thigh seem weird. Normally I would say the abs are too much for a female character, but I know your style and it is, after all, Red Sonja, a hardened warrior, so it fits well.
As for Cavewoman, the overall pose is strong, but there are a few issues you could strengthen. Her right forearm looks a little short in comparison to the rest of her. Also, you should either move her right breast back or push the ribcage out farther, probably the latter. Her feet are a real strong point in this figure, very grounded and weightbearing. I think you might be mistaken about the small hands thing. They look alright to me, though Cavewoman's left hand could use a tweak to make it feel more like it's grasping the spear for a thrust. Looks a bit weak at present.
Overall, a really good effort here. I've had my money on you in this draw-off from the start and this should surely lock you in for this round. My only regret is that I f*&cked up on the deadline for the fourth round and was disqualified instead of being knocked out legitimately by artwork of this kind of caliber. Oh, well, next time.
Best if luck getting through the finals. Good work, as always.
EJ, we could sit here and pick apart and overanalyze this drawing to death here but really man, its great and top notch drawing. Just finish it and run with it. I love the energy, I love the posing, and I love the level of detail and the composition is strong. I would change 2 things. Extend Cavewomans right leg out more to make her pose more dynamic like shes about to strike. Maybe change her expression to match Red Sonjas ferocity. Cavewomans breasts are fine though. Or just ignore what I said and finish this one up. Its really solid.

Very cool! I think sonjas arms look awsome! As far as cave woman I think the angle of her torso or hips should be changed. She just looks more bent than humanly possible. Although, that seems like it would be a big change since those areas link the rest of the body together. Oh well, cool none the less!
Actually, after looking at it again I think its the positioning of cavewomans right leg that is the problem. If it were raised in front of her you would be able to see the right side of her hips. That would fix it because the left leg and her torso look fine together, but then I think changing it that way would mess up the piece. Well I tried

I love this pic alot.
The boobs flapping around is a great touch but Cave woman isn't showing the same flow as Red. Less action in the cave woman drys out the corner and makes think Red is going to win without any trouble.
If she had a more fierce look to her face, (or her boobs flapping around) it would improve this pic.

The hands should be bigger but I just couldn't figure it out. I agree completely with the stance of Red Sonja. I think that this has a lot to do with me not working out the drawing before I get into the dedicated pencils. Cavewoman's interesting angle is the broken back that I mentioned before and there are misproportions all over her figure but I tried to cover it up. thanks.
I love it...The only thing that bothers me is the cave womans face. Her facial expression doesnt fit. She should look mad...
I didn't really want her to look mad. She's so cute when she's drawn by Bud Root that I wanted to capture some of that innocence that's so inviting in his drawings. I wanted to gove her a much different attitude than Sonja and I think that the intention comes across here. I know it's a little disconcerting but it was intentional.
Thanks

I saw the tangent but I didn't know what to do about it. I tried to darkent the area under the leg to lift the empty space of her leg off that spot but it still was't working so I left it.
I agree with the grasp on the spear that you're talking about, I was having trouble with the hands a great deal on this one, on both girls. Cavewoman's pose and awkwardness are intentional though I didn't mean to break her back. I wanted Sonja to have the warrior's advantage on Cavewoman and I wanted the two of them to have very different natures, so if the grip seems weak then I think that it works towards Cavewoman's character.
Thanks for the well wish in the tournament and you did great there. I'msuprised Jamal didn't let you slide with a late entry or something, I think he did something like that before for others. . . not sure though.
Thanks again.

The suggestion that you have here is spot on, about Cavewoman's less than dynamic pose. If you check out my site, you'll see a great example of what could have given this the Cavewoman character that dynamic element that you're talking about here. If you have a moment, Click on the picture it will take you to my entry and check it out.
Again, the expression was intentional. Really, I wanted to make her look dingy and sort of out of place. This accentuates Sonja's demeanor some.
And I'm not ignoring what anyone says, I just don't have the hear to go back and readraw a lot of the points that are made here.
Thanks FIG.

Thanks for the rating. That's much more that I would have given this drawing. Like I said before, I wanted Cavewoman to have less flow than Red. The flapping boos idea sounds like a winner though. I'll have to remember that. lol
Thanks for your responses guys . . . . please don't mind the spelling.

Press, you've really done a bang up job with this. I think this may be the most fluid work I've seen from you. Only real suggestion I have is that rather than Sonja's right foot resting on the dinosaur, have it in the air as though she is jumping. The reason being is that her breastd are being tugged upward which to me would signify that she is jumping down. Take into account that she is thrusting her arms upward, I think the only thing that could counteract gravity is if she was jumping from a higher plane. I do agree about Cavewoman's back being turned possibly too severely as well. It does look a bit unnatural.
All in all though, the anatomy of this is really stunning. Great job.

i always wondered if sonja's were real or fake...i see no scar so those weapons of mass erections are real...nice pic...the only thing is the mouth of the dinosaur looks like it's part of red's leg at first glance...it follows the contours of her leg alittle too much...that's my only crit...

If you plan to tweak it s'more, I suggest having the two ladies look at each other s'more. They seem to be looking off panel at opposite directions, as opposed to be locked in mortal combat.

Wow Chris! That is so right-on that it's like you were there when I started the drawing. Originaly I had Sonja flying throught the air with the her left leg pulled in front of her ninja style. This was before I evn thought if the dinosaur. The breasts were drawn in that way because of the jump pose that I originaly wnated to draw.
Awesome call on that one!

Even though i've said a million times i hate the way some womens bodies are drawn in comics, there is no hating on this picture. Although the boobs are rediculously large, the rest of the bodies look logical and real. The movements seem fluid and the attention to detail is amazing. The shading, shapes and lines are all very well done, and the bodies, aside from the large boobs, look very well put together.
The dino head is the most impressive bit though. It looks like you put a shit load of work into his skin. Good job.

I think this is great. Theres a lot of energy to this piece man. The gravity on the boobs is really well done, and just adds so much more action to the whole thing. Your dino head in the background is really well modeled as well. I can feel the forms you were going for.
I'm really not in the critiquing mood, and you seem to have pretty solid advice all around, so I'm gonna just say that this is kick ass :D (Cause it is!)

I usually take the ones that are small where I don't have to do a lot of redrawing. A lot of the suggestions here are going to involve a lot of work that I don't have the heart to do though, they are excellent and correct.
Thanks

Yes the boobs are large but I really wanted to capture the nature of, at least the Cavewoman character. I don't really know how voluptuous Red Sonja is so I embellished. I do see her with an athletic build . . . obviously.
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad that there are some redeeming values in this for you.

Yes there was a lot of Great advice here. I just wish that I had the man balls to apply some of the points that were made to the drawing. Again, I just didn't want to go back and redraw so much of the piece to make it work better.
As I write this, the final polls have closed on the 2006 Digital Webbing Tournament and I would like to thank those of you who voted and supported me in this round as well as throughout the tournament. It was a great experience and I learned a great deal during the last 6 months that this was in motion and discovered that I'm capable of a lot more than I ever thought was possible and that I still have so much to learn.
Your votes and comments from fellow illustrators were a great incentive to keep moving forward through all of these challenges even when I really didn't want or thought that I couldn't go any further.
Thanks again for all of your support and your great comments and taking the time out of your lives to make Comments, Opinions and Critiques, even when I haven't been as favorable and professional to your thoughts as I should have been. For that I appologize and hope that my future actions and reactions will make up for any transgressions that I may have committed in the past.
One more time!
Thanks everyone.
