Just wondering where one goes for decent zombie reference. Obviously threre are a zillion movies but which ones are the best? Which has the most wicked looking zombies?

Return of the Living Dead comes to mind as does Evil Dead.

What is the general consensus?

Movies only, don't bother mentioning comics.

I recommend not going towards movies, but instead looking up forensics, or police photos of dead people. The FBI has a school on collecting clues off of long dead bodies; they might have some reference. Medical injuries too. wounds and rotting and long dead corpses look much different in real life than in hollywood.

You have to consider the elements and also insects. Clouds of flies and limbs full of maggots. Skin takes on a orange color with blackish brown spots where rotting begins, much like a banana going over ripe. Bloating. Fluid collection.

It's really interesting to research.

Real life referance is good. There are plenty of medical sites with rotten corpses on the net. There are also sites like www.rotten.com and www.steakandcheese.com with lots of dead people. Warning on those 2 though--- don't look unless you have a strong stomach. And they are not for kids!!

And here's a list of movies that have some good zombie ref:
Dawn Of The Dead
Night Of The Living Dead
Return Of The Living Dead (and sequels)
Zombi (and sequels)
Cemetery Man
Dead Alive
Resident Evil
Shaun of the Dead
and of course, Weekend at Bernie's
