He DW-ites. Been a loooooooooog while since i've traveled this way. Not by choice either,hehehe. Anyway to make a long story short, this ius a simple Art Jam that me and the guys mentioned in the title, Artsta & Demissary, art doing to keep our skill levels up and learn a few things a long the way. C & C is always well. We are always in a state of learning. So anyway, I'm strtin it off. The theme for today is Captain America. Each day we'll have a new theme. Well be blessed and enjoy some kool art.

A friend of mine (Julian)A Phenomenal artist, check him out sometime Julians site (http://www.amadikus.com/) he's been telling me that
he's been drawing with the side of his pencil and how much easier the form seems to flow for him, and as you can see by his site this guy is no JOKE he's gooooood Strictly JEDI material in my opinion, so I decided to try the technique and it helped a LOT so I MIGHT try another storm sketch if I have time but this is the one I have so far using that technique. I would have harden some of the lines but I was afraid I would start drawing instead of sketching, I wanted this one to be a lot loser.

You mean he draws with his arm out straight in front of him? Thats a figure drawing thing, its so you can take measurements of the model, so you can get the gestural drawing down and so you can apply line weight to varying degrees. Great technique to use and nice work Deon.

I was thinking just Arsenal but I don't see why we can't choose a one character each from jla. Most of the stuff I buy is marvel but that meltzer guy sure knows how to pick artists. Yeah you can pick. hehe. I was just getting inspireds---that's just how i came up with the heros, but we may need to do what Jar suggested. make a list of who can Pick --- some sort of Rotation.
But then it gets super complicated, and I just want it to be fun. If all would like me to keep pickin heroes, I will, but we can radomly pic too. Object is to keep drawin no matter what. Gladiator today, Link tomorrow. Feel free to add on for Fri, Sat, and Sun.

hey INK, man I use anything I can get my hands on now a days, most the time I would sketch with a ball point pen, for the gladiator sketch I found an old Red pencil. Lately I've been using the side of a number two pencil to help with my gestures and etc, And Justice, join in where you can, this is why we are all doing this, trying to build up our speed and technique, so whatever you can do, do it. You may surprise yourself, after a while you'll be keeping up and probably getting ahead of the pack, remember they're sketches so they don't have to be prestiene try quick stuff and work up from there. I know all the other guys make it look easy but it's something we all keep practicing (literally)everyday. HELP ME OUT HERE GUYS AM I RIGHT? Speaking of which DAG GUYS you are kicking butt on these images and I agree with Caanan seeing you gladiator piece colored makes you want to take it up a notch, I had to force myself to keep it loose. and WELCOME INK, ANGELT, and xaltair. Not to barge in and sound like I know what I'm talking about :slap: , but I think you guys should try to keep it at one a day or at least 4 a week. Just set aside 30 min a day max (the length of a sitcom) to bang something out. Everyone's been amazing so far, it's just that the holidays get hectic. Keep focused and don't stress. It's a SKETCH thread right?...not an illustration thread? Here's a really quick/rough Zatanna sketch to help you get started again. I'll keep up if you guys do.

I love Galactus he's such a great character. But all those angles- That's what's so intimidateing. That and all the stuff that'll need drawing to put him into scale. :) I look up Galactus all the time and I think the absolute best rendition I've seen has been by John Byrne. Internse stuff. I need to get my hands on that comic.

When I think of Conan I think the movie. One of the scenes that stick out the most for me is when Conan's in cognito as one of the deciples of Doom. He infiltrates the camp and ends up standing over a well and another deciple asks him "what is it he seeks" or something like that... :)

I think it looks great Deon, but if you're looking for critiques I'd say maybe take a look at the arm behind him and where the shoulder connects to his torso. Right now it looks a little low.

Here's another idea, (I hate trying to give advice to people that are more talented than I :confused: ) Maybe bring his head in so that we can't see so much of his neck, you might not have to move the arm behind him if you do that. I wouldn't play with twisting the torso anymore, it might look funny with his lower body going the other way.

deon these are great. Love the martin and love both flashes.
It's kind of hard to figure out what wrong with the second flash. It might be that the right leg is forced at us a little to much and if it was down sized a little it would look so large. Than agian i dont know the porportion sizes between a thigh and a foreshortened fist. Great stuff nontheless :p it hard pose and i am still trying grasp forshortening

hello all! I have been watching this thread for awhile and it definately has been very inspiring. I have recently just been focusing on inking and coloring but have been wanting to get my pencil skills back up to par. it's gonna take me some time since I really haven't "drawn" anything in like 3 yrs, so bear with me and my rough funky sketches.

lol mat major.. idk moon knight has been bleh to me but to some fan they love him. Howeveri chose bats or moonknight or both because i thought i give the option of black or white moody cape man in front of huge moon:)

For the Daily sketches I've beeen sketching on bright multi purpose letter size. Just becuase it's cheap and I can mess up, throw fits and crupple them up into tightly packed balls as much as I want. :)

For pages I loosley sketch layouts on quarter page (lettersize) thumbs that I scan in and blow up to 10x15. I blueline it then print on 14x17 bristol. Pencil for 6-8 hours and DING! I use photoshop to blueline and this process mimics lightboxing that's MORE commmon among comic artists.

Feelinme most comic pages are done on 11x17 paper with a 10x15 live area.

WELCOME jpruitt0692002!!!! First of all I would say don't let these guys intimidate you because they have been doing this probably from the time they could hold a pencil ( and for the mutants on this thread when they hit their teens). I would say slow it down a bit and really think about the human form there are some really great tutorials on line for drawing. there are also some really great books, some techniques may work for you where others may not, drawing from life will help you achieve that understanding why the body does what it does or how a muscle wraps around the other. Understanding that the body is made up out of shapes is one direction, cylinders squares circles and so on. don't try by osmoses, learn by breaking it down into parts. you might want to start off with heads and then continue to move down. these would be my recommendation for great books Bridgemans complete guide to drawing from life, how to draw the marvel way, Human anatomy for artist, superheroes by Joe Kubert and even animation books those guys really understand the body like this guy http://drawingforce.com/ he even has movie tutorials on his site that show you how to make the figure flow. BUT this is my humble opinion and art is so subjective and there are many ways to get the same result... I hope this helps a bit, if you need more help than this just shout I'm sure one of us would be happy to help you take your passion forward. but the best thing you could do for yourself is what these guys are doing... and thats SKETCH EVERY DAY even if its just figure studies that helps out a ton like the image below. again hope this helps.

I'd say just think about what you want to draw. Compare what you are drawing to something similar. Like a magazine with a female in that position. Just compare what you did to it. Then adjust as you can. Time and repetition and keen observation will go a long way.

Deon- thanks for the insight and the encouragement. I have been doing some sktches recently from real life and it does make it alot easier to understand how it all works. Between working on anatomy and finding my "style", hopefully things will start coming together for soon. I plan on doing at least one sketch a day so I can become a better artist. By the way, what is the next character that we are supposed to work on?

They both have sound construction or light moving powers (like gl)

Between working on anatomy and finding my "style", hopefully things will start coming together for soon.
Don't worry about style, It will develop on it's own and once you have a good foundation to work on you'll find you can adapt your drawing style to match each peice you do. Still working on it myself. :whistlin:

not bad, but you need to slow down and take your time. let the hand draw what the eye sees, not what your brain tells you should be there. that's the biggest problem that i'm always facing, since i don't draw daily, but as a hobby. Whenever i draw from reference i end up messing stuff up because i'm not looking at the ref pic, i'm drawing what i think should be there and it always gets screwed up.

Learn to let your hand draw what you see in the ref pic, not what your brain says should be there and you've won half the battle.

I'll be posting up my stuff later today, i'm working on Phoenix right now, kinda behind.

This isn't my thread but I propose this: Do what you can and if you have to skip a day or two skip a day or two. Don't worry about catching up, just do the sketch for that day. It seems as though some are worried that they're so behind that they can't catch up or would have to do 15 of the past sketches before being able to do the one for that day.

Again, not my thread but this thing has been really inspirational to myself and a lot of other DWers so I would hate to see it die :cry: .

Xaltair- thanks for the input. After you mentioning that, I looked back at my pics and the references and I really think thats the problem I am having. I will definately keep that in the back of my mind when I work on the collosus/shadowcat piece for tommorow. And I totally agree with you Mat Major, this has been a huge influence to me and I am sure others. Do what you can, and just keep throwing stuff up when you can. It has been awesome seeing everyones take on the same characters. Keep up the incredible work and keep this thread alive!
